About the property

The gîtes at Le Bois de l'Eglise are contained within a tastefully renovated typical Charentais farmhouse complex. There is a private courtyard for three of the gîtes and a private garden for one the gîtes. In addition there is access to the owners 1 acre garden with its various seating and eating areas. Le Bois de l'Eglise is a tiny hamlet close to village of Villiers le Roux in the commune of Villefagnan in south West France. It is close to the town of Ruffec with its supermarkets, with fresh seeafood stall, biweekly market, shops, cafés and public amenities. The location is rural countryside retreat perfect for cycling and walking. The region has its own micro-climate and has some of the sunniest weather in France, second only to the French Riviera. The area is primarily agricultural, with abundant sunflowers in the summer, and the surrounding woods and copses provide for a large variety of animal and bird life.

Poitou-Charente is on the western coast of France, facing the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay. It is made up of 4 department regions, Deux-Sèvres to the north, Charente to the south, Vienne to the east and Charente-Maritime to the west. Poitou-Charente has so much to offer the visitor with so much to see, do and enjoy.

The Charente, where the Le Bois de l'Eglise is situated, has a reputation of being a quiet area where you can explore the rural area far from the crowds. Close by are the picturesque and historic villages of Verteuil-sur-Charente and Nanteuil-en-Vallée with their excellent restaurants and cafes. There are other great places to visit such as Angoulême with its ramparts and its captivating city centre with a mix of old and new and the unexpected, Cognac, with its focus on the famous brandy, Confolens which is home to the Festival de Folklore and Aubeterre-sur-Drone with its fascinating underground church.

Vienne is where the regional capital Poitiers is situated. The centre of the city with its historic buildings, street cafés and boulevards is a great place to explore and shop. If you are into action rides, time machine and dancing robots then a trip to Futuroscope is a must for children of all ages. Other recommended places to visit are the medieval market town of Chauvigny, with its five ruined castles and Anglles-sur-l'Anglin set on the river overlooked by a ruined castle and officially one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Deux-Sevres department is to the north east of Poitou-Charentes and is best known for the Marais-Poitevin, a large area of canals and marshes. The most important town in the department is the former medieval port of Niort on the Sevre-Niortaise river. The town boasts a huge 12th-century castle built by Henry II and Richard the Lionheart. Niort is a good base from which to explore the Marais-Poitevin. The region is perfect for exploring on foot, by bicycle or on horseback with hundreds of kilometers of tracks. At Coulon you can hire a traditional “pigouille” (punt) with a boatman to explore the canals and marshes who will tell you about the marches and its plants and animals. Moving on, the medieval centre of Parthenay is worth visiting, with its cobbled streets leading to 13th century ramparts and a drawbridge with twin towers.

Charente-Maritime is very popular with both French and overseas visitors for it attractions such as ile-de-Ré and the port of La Rochelle. The island of ile-de-Ré attract many visitors with its beaches and family friendly atmosphere. In La Rochelle the Vieux Port with its many places to eat and it's chic boutiques and vibrant atmosphere is a great place to visit. South of La Rochelle is the sea side resort Châtelaillon-Plage which boasts a 2.5 km of fine sandy beach, esplanade, casino, water park, and thalassotherapy centre. Continuing down the coast there are numerous interesting places such as the 17th century new town of Rochefort built around the port and naval buildings.

Le Bois de l'Église is perfectly placed to visit the attractions of Poitou-Charente. All the tourist sights and places to visits described are between 40minutes and 2 hours of easy driving from Le Bois de l'Église.

Superb Gite for a holiday

  • 5 of 5

Beverley & Tony are wonderful hosts. They have converted these farm buildings into comfortable accommodation supplying just about everything anyone could need for a stay: there was even a rice cooker! We loved the calm and peace of this corner of France and the wonderful fresh air. It was also a good stopping off point for trips to La Rochelle, Cognac, Marais Poitevin, The Dordogne and off course all the wonderful small towns and villages in the region. As cyclists we managed circa 2000km during our nearly 4-week stay. The roads are perfect for the cyclist as what little traffic there is is well behaved. A plus for this area are the waymarked routes provided by the North Charente Tourism folk. These take you off the beaten track to places you may otherwise have missed. All in all we highly recommend staying with Beverley & Tony. You couldn't meet a nicer couple.

Owner's Response: It always a pleasure to have guests who have enjoyed themselves with us. We were so happy that they found the cycle routes set out and signposted by the people at Tourisme en Charente so useful. It is a lovely area for cyclists of any level.

Wow... Awesome place for a brilliant price

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week 1st-8th Aug 2015. The gite has everything you could wish for from Corkscrew to Garlic Crusher... honestly they have everything here you can imagine. We loved our stay so much we were lucky enough to stay a couple extra days !! Tony & Bev are wonderful hosts, and really have an eye for detail. The Gite is nice and cool, and there is a seating area outside for meals or to relax after a day exploring.... Ruffec is 3m up the road and has bars/supermarket chemist etc,. The gites are in a small village just off the main drag, and are easily accessible for trips to Bordeaux, La Rochelle the beautiful town of Poitiers are with an hour or two away. .. ok it is remote but peace and tranquillity is plentiful here. We may even pay a return visit next year, and i don't visit the same place twice, but this changed our minds... Excellent!! Thankyou Tony & Bev for your wonderful information, and ideas for us to visit, we loved it... can you tell ?? :0) 10/10
