Stunning Edwardian Villa And Private Gardens With Beautiful Views

Updated: 22-Sep-2016
Villa in Portmeirion, Nr. Porthmadog, Wales - Peaceful And Private Location With Attractions Nearby

Hafod Cae Maen is a beautiful Edwardian Villa that has been refurbished to a high standard. It is set on a headland and its beautiful gardens are very private. The views from the property are wonderful. It is a lovely place to relax in, whether in front of a real fire or while gazing at the view from the garden. Alternatively it is an ideal base for exploring the many attractions of North Wales - the sweeping beaches, the Ffestinniog and Welsh Highland Railways, the Italianate Village of Portmeirion, historic castles and plenty more besides.

About the Owner

Having spent many childhood holidays in North Wales with my grandparents, I (Paul) fell in love with the area and became a volunteer on the Ffestinniog Railway. I stumbled across Hafod Cae Maen a few years ago, befriended Kitty the owner and expressed an interest in buying the beautiful house and gardens should she ever wish to sell. I was working in Botswana when Kitty and her family asked whether I was still interested, and jumped at the chance (and onto a plane). I bought Hafod Cae Maen in 2006 and undertook an extensive refurbishment. It was great fun but a mammoth task. I learned first hand how not to manage budgets! I have since married and my wife, Claire, and our baby son Matthew and black labrador Charlie visit as often as we can. We are delighted to share our lovely home.

“Top-class facilities, complete privacy, heaven for London escapees”

5 of 5 stars

This beautiful house in the perfect get-away for stressed-out urbanites. It combines complete privacy from the outside world, and breath-taking views, with all the comforts and furnishings of an elegant and smart family home. Drinks, in the library, before dinner on a freezing night with a roaring fire was heaven.

If you're heading to North Wales and looking for luxury, seclusion and scenery, it has to be Hafod Cae Maen.

Hafod Cae Maen - what a beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house in an idyllic location. Kids played endless hours of hide and seek in the amazing garden, toys in playhouse all great. Steam train rides another hit, also going to the underground slate mines. Beautiful beaches walking distance from the house. The house itself is very specious, loved the library where we escaped at times from the kids, who were more than happy in the family room with the board games provided. The weather was kind to us, so we felt rested and relaxed at the end of our stay. We hope very much to return again soon.

From the Owner

My father's parents lived in Minffordd and when I was a small boy we spent every summer here with my grandfather. My parents and four boys somehow squeezed into my grandfather's tiny cottage and saluted the trains from the Ffestinniog Railway as they passed, only inches away. We had the most fantastic summers, spending many hours on the beautiful and deserted beaches. For a while I thought we had our own beach! Hafod Cae Maen is very private but is close to many attractions including the Ffestinniog and Welsh Highland Railway, the Italianate Village of Portmeirion, stunning castles, beautiful beaches, Snowdonia National Park and plenty more besides. There is something for everyone!

Activity and Interests

There are a number of beaches nearby. Particular favourites are Harlech and Black Rock Sands. You can even walk to a beach from the house if you have sturdy shoes and a sense of adventure!

Use of car is essential to take your luggage and provisions to the property but once you are there you may not need to use it for the rest of your holiday. It depends on the type of holiday you wish to have.

Portmeirion, the Italianate Village is a few hundred yards away as the crow flies. You can either drive or walk there. Porthmadog, a terminus for the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, is about 3 miles away.

Further Details:

Porthmadog is the nearest town and contains a few shops including a large Tesco (many guests arrange a Tesco shop to be delivered on the day of their arrival). There is an excellent butchers in Penryhndeudraeth, a couple of miles away - D G Davies, 01766 770 239. At the time of writing there is a farmers' market in Porthmadog on the last Saturday of each month. Bodnant Welsh Food Centre is more of a trek being in Conwy, but it gets very good reviews so may be worth it if you are real foodies!
