Overview

About the property

Apartment in Glencaple, Nr. Dumfries with stunning views over the River Nith

Minimum stay three nights. The Flat at Glencaple offers very comfortable and cosy ground floor accommodation for two in the heart of the village. Built in the early 19th century, it has been renovated to a very high standard. Living room has a wood burning stove as well as efficient electric heating so you'll be warm and cosy. Lovely riverside views from the living room and bedroom. Free WiFi is available. Situated on the Burns and Solway Coast Heritage Trails it is only a few miles from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Reserve at Caerlaverock. In winter Barnacle geese fly past your window morning and evening and other geese, wildfowl and ducks can be seen on the river. Otters are often spotted nearby and in summertime porpoises and seals have been seen on the river. This area is a nature lover's paradise (BBC's "Autumn Watch" broadcast from here in 2015). Also well-placed for gentle walking, cycling, fishing, sightseeing and relaxing. Lovely beaches are only half an hour's drive away and Caerlaverock Castle is just up the road.

Glencaple has a new and very busy cafe and shop (The Boathouse), and popular hotel (The Nith) serving lunches and dinners all year round - both just around the corner from the Flat. Go to www.caerlaverock.org.uk for more information about the area.

About Sue Greig

Sue lives in Glencaple (just around the corner from the Flat) with her husband Rob and Springer Spaniel Maisie. Rob and Sue are both now retired and are enjoying it very much! They moved to Glencaple ten years ago (Sue comes from the area) after living in cities most of their lives and spending a large part of their careers travelling the world. They now enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area.

Sue Greig purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Sue Greig chose Dumfries and Galloway

Sue and Rob bought the property to renovate and rent as a holiday home so that others could enjoy the delights of the area. Everything is here for a wonderful Scottish holiday especially if you are a nature lover - the scenery, bird-watching and wildlife are superb. Glencaple is only five miles from Dumfries and is perfectly situated - rural yet not remote. You can be in the depths of Galloway in an hour; in Glasgow in an hour and a half and Carlisle in 40 minutes.

What makes this apartment unique

Although small, the property is very comfortable, well-laid out and easily managed. The kitchen is very well equipped but you can always pop round the corner to the local hotel or tearoom if you don't feel like cooking.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are home again after a great week. I was hoping to see lots geese and was blown away by the sheer numbers. The flat was lovely and we hope to visit again.

A great little secret.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a comfortable week in this beautifully refurbished cottage which was well equiped and warm. We walked across to the quayside every day to see the fishermen and the bird life. The view from the door was beautiful and despite the rain we found something to do every day. The food at the Pub nearby was tasty and goo value.

Peaceful location, well equipped

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. The kitchen is small, but has everything you need. There's a hotel just on the corner if you want a break from cooking or just want to pop in for a drink. At the quay, which you can see from the front door, there's a new shop & cafe opening mid-April 2018.

It was a bit chilly when we stayed, but there's electric radiators in the lounge & bedroom to keep you cosy. It's only the bathroom where we felt the cold even with the towel rail on. The shower is huge though!

Cross over the road from the flat and you can walk alongside the river. The view is lovely across to the hills on the other side. 10 mins drive away is Caerlaverock Castle and a nature reserve too for a pleasant easy walk. Drive back up the road to Dumfries to cross the river and head towards scenic Rockfliffe. There's plenty of other places to visit along the coastal road to the 'artists town's of Kirkcudbright (about 50mins drive).

Well equipped and good position within the village. Easy parking in front of the property. Good pub/restaurant if needed within walking distance.

Lovely area to explore. Castles, NT/Heritage properties and scenic walks. Lots of information leaflets in the flat. Highly recommended.

Comfortable retreat

  • 4 of 5

We spent 7 nights in this apartment at Glencaple, just south of Dumfries. The apartment was very well set up and maintained. The kitchen was well appointed for cooking meals. The location is great for exploring Dumfries and Galloway and even the Scottish Borders. The owners restaurant recommendations were good. Throughout the process of booking to arriving, the owners were prompt with replies and very helpful.

Brilliant base to explore the Solway.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful apartment, good value for money, everything you'd want for a comfortable holiday. Quiet, well furnished, spotless and excellent communication with owners. Great view across river from both front rooms. Great for anyone interested in bird-watching, 1500 Barnacle Geese visible from windows when we were there in February.

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Beautiful sandy beaches in Galloway are a 45 minutes drive away. Plenty of riverside and coastal walks locally. The Nith is a tidal river and has the second largest tidal drop in the UK after the Severn. Look out for the bore!

Travel:

Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle airports are about 1 hour 45 minutes away. To make the most of your visit a car is essential.

Distances:

The nearest town is Dumfries which is 5 miles away. Caerlaverock Castle and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Reserve are 2 and 3 miles away.

Further Details:

The Nith Hotel serves bar meals as well as lunches and dinners in their restaurant every day. A travelling Post Office visits Glencaple twice a week and sets up in the village hall. Dumfries is well-served with supermarkets, banks and shops. The nearest supermarkets are Lidl and Morrisons. Lots of good restaurants and cafes in and around Dumfries - our favourites are Loch Arthur (Beeswing), Casa Mia, Primo Piano, Home, Mrs Greens Tearoom, Nona Lou's, Polka Dot (all in Dumfries) and Del Amitri (in Powfoot) a half hours drive away). Tasting some of the superb local produce will be the highlight of your visit.

Sadly our new village shop and café burnt down last year but rebuilding has started and work should be done by Easter. There is a small temporary shop on the quay.

Nearest bank is in Dumfries.

Plenty of gentle walking and hill walking in the area as well as birdwatching fishing, golfing, cycling, mountain biking. Spectacular scenery and wildlife.

Dumfries and Galloway is becoming famous for its Arts and Music Festivals including the Big Burns Supper, Spring Fling, Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival and many more.
