Peaceful (But Not Remote) Location in Friendly Village near Dumfries.

Updated: 21-Nov-2016
Apartment in Glencaple, Nr. Dumfries with stunning views over the River Nith

Minimum stay three nights. The Flat at Glencaple offers very comfortable ground floor accommodation for two in the heart of the village. Built in the early 19th century, it has been renovated to a very high standard. Situated on the Burns and Solway Coast Heritage Trails it is only a few miles from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Reserve at Caerlaverock. In winter Barnacle geese fly past your window morning and evening and other geese, wildfowl and ducks can be seen on the river. Otters are often spotted nearby and in summertime porpoises and seals have been seen on the river. This area is a nature lover's paradise (BBC's "Autumn Watch" broadcast here in 2015). Also well-placed for gentle walking, cycling, fishing, sightseeing and relaxing. Lovely beaches are only half an hour's drive away and Caerlaverock Castle is just up the road.

Glencaple has a busy shop/tearoom, and popular hotel serving lunches and dinners all year round. Go to www.caerlaverockestate.co.uk for more information about the area.

About the Owner

Sue lives in Glencaple (just around the corner from the Flat) with her husband Rob and Springer Spaniel Maisie. Rob and Sue are both now retired and are enjoying it very much! They moved to Glencaple ten years ago after living in cities most of their lives and spending a large part of their careers travelling the world. They now enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area.

Lovely Flat Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely flat, in an ideal location overlooking the Nith estuary. The shop on the quay was ideal for a morning walk for papers and the Nith Hotel which was 5 mins away served evening meals in a restaurant that overlooked the estuary. Edward & Susan

Lovely flat, lovely location

  • 5 of 5

A really really nice property, felt spacious and had everything could possibly need during our stay. My holiday emergency bag of scissors, cloths etc didn't get even unpacked! The stove was easy to use and warmed the room up easily as did the radiators when it went chilly at night. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook and was "full size" equipment not travel sized as in many other places we've stayed. Shower hot and powerful. View out of bedroom and living room right over the river. A few minutes drive brings you to Caerlaverock nature reserve with loads of birds to see as well as walks. Dumfries only 10 minutes drive and has a variety of supermarkets plus easy access to A75 for trips further afield. Definitely a holiday cottage to visit again!

Very nice and peaceful location. Everything we needed for a short stay was there. Very convenient for exploring the area. Nice to get home from golf and have a drink in the garden.

Cosy flat in a lovely location

  • 4 of 5

We were impressed with the accommodation . We stayed over Christmas and as the flat is very well equipped we found all we needed to cook our Christmas dinner! The log fire was very cosy and much appreciated. We joined folk in the village for their Carol Service on Christmas Eve and were given a warm welcome. This is a lovely area to explore and the flat has wonderful views over the Estuary. We spent an interesting day at the Wetlands Centre which has a cafe and shop. The cafe was very welcome with good hot drinks and food for a wet December day. We certainly hope to return in the spring when hopefully the weather will have improved.

Great location + accommodation - + things worked!

  • 5 of 5

I've no hesitation in recommending this apartment. It was roomy, comfortable, clean and well-equipped - what's more, all the equipment worked! The location is wonderful for bird-watching, in fact we hardly needed to go to the special bird reserves. The estuary is a constant, ever-changing delight. Shops nearby, friendly folks, and Sue was helpful and informative. We were a bit too early for the flocks of geese overhead, but there's always another time...

We highly recommend this cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The flat is warm and cosy, very clean and comfortable. The position is great with lovely views across the estuary. Its really lovely to be able to walk to the shop in the morning to buy a paper and the café servers the most wonderful full Scottish breakfast we can certainly recommend it!! The owners have furnished and equipped the flat with great care and to a high standard. All the big things are done well but its the little things that count and those are too many to list. We had a wonderful few days and will certainly be returning.

From the Owner

Sue and Rob bought the property to renovate and rent as a holiday home so that others could enjoy the delights of the area. Everything is here for a wonderful Scottish holiday especially if you are a nature lover - the scenery, bird-watching and wildlife are superb. Glencaple is only five miles from Dumfries and is perfectly situated - rural yet not remote. You can be in the depths of Galloway in an hour; in Glasgow in an hour and a half and Carlisle in 40 minutes.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : Nith Hotel at 50 Metres Nearest Golf : Dumfries at 5 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Nith Hotel at 50 Metres Car: recommended

Beautiful sandy beaches in Galloway are a 45 minutes drive away. Plenty of riverside and coastal walks locally. The Nith is a tidal river and has the second largest tidal drop in the UK after the Severn. Look out for the bore!

Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle airports are about 1 hour 45 minutes away. To make the most of your visit a car is essential.

The nearest town is Dumfries which is 5 miles away. Caerlaverock Castle and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Reserve are 2 and 3 miles away.

Further Details:

We have a village shop and tearoom (both are open all year but tea room is closed Mondays in the winter). The Nith Hotel serves bar meals as well as lunches and dinners in their restaurant every day. A travelling Post Office visits Glencaple twice a week and sets up in the village hall. Dumfries is well-served with supermarkets, banks and shops. The nearest supermarkets are Lidl and Morrisons. Lots of good restaurants and cafes in and around Dumfries - our favourites are Loch Arthur (Beeswing), Casa Mia, Little Italy, Primo Piano, Mrs Greens Tearoom, Nona Lou's, Polka Dot (all in Dumfries) and Del Amitri (in Annan a half hours drive away). Tasting some of the superb local produce will be the highlight of your visit.

Nearest bank is in Dumfries.

Plenty of gentle walking and hill walking in the area as well as birdwatching fishing, golfing, cycling, mountain biking. Spectacular scenery and wildlife.

Dumfries and Galloway is becoming famous for its Arts and Music Festivals including the Big Burns Supper, Spring Fling, Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival and many more.

Although small, the property is very comfortable, well-laid out and easily managed. The kitchen is very well equipped but you can always pop round the corner to the local hotel or tearoom if you don't feel like cooking.
