Peaceful (But Not Remote) Location in Friendly Village near Dumfries.

Bedrooms 1
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Apartment in Glencaple, Nr. Dumfries with stunning views over the River Nith

Minimum stay three nights. The Flat at Glencaple offers very comfortable ground floor accommodation for two in the heart of the village. Built in the early 19th century, it has been renovated to a very high standard. Situated on the Burns and Solway Coast Heritage Trails it is only a few miles from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Reserve at Caerlaverock. In winter Barnacle geese fly past your window morning and evening and other geese, wildfowl and ducks can be seen on the river. Otters are often spotted nearby and in summertime porpoises and seals have been seen on the river. This area is a nature lover's paradise (BBC's "Autumn Watch" broadcast from here in 2015). Also well-placed for gentle walking, cycling, fishing, sightseeing and relaxing. Lovely beaches are only half an hour's drive away and Caerlaverock Castle is just up the road.

Glencaple has a busy shop/tearoom (sadly, a fire in Sept 2016 has led to closure but a small temporary shop has been opened up on the Quay while the shop/tearoom is being rebuilt), and popular hotel serving lunches and dinners all year round. Go to www.caerlaverock.org.uk for more information about the area.

About Sue Greig

Sue lives in Glencaple (just around the corner from the Flat) with her husband Rob and Springer Spaniel Maisie. Rob and Sue are both now retired and are enjoying it very much! They moved to Glencaple ten years ago after living in cities most of their lives and spending a large part of their careers travelling the world. They now enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area.

Sue Greig purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Sue Greig chose Dumfries & Galloway

Sue and Rob bought the property to renovate and rent as a holiday home so that others could enjoy the delights of the area. Everything is here for a wonderful Scottish holiday especially if you are a nature lover - the scenery, bird-watching and wildlife are superb. Glencaple is only five miles from Dumfries and is perfectly situated - rural yet not remote. You can be in the depths of Galloway in an hour; in Glasgow in an hour and a half and Carlisle in 40 minutes.

What makes this apartment unique

Although small, the property is very comfortable, well-laid out and easily managed. The kitchen is very well equipped but you can always pop round the corner to the local hotel or tearoom if you don't feel like cooking.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are home again after a great week. I was hoping to see lots geese and was blown away by the sheer numbers. The flat was lovely and we hope to visit again.

Brilliant base to explore the Solway.

Beautiful apartment, good value for money, everything you'd want for a comfortable holiday. Quiet, well furnished, spotless and excellent communication with owners. Great view across river from both front rooms. Great for anyone interested in bird-watching, 1500 Barnacle Geese visible from windows when we were there in February.

Comfortable retreat

  • 4 of 5

We spent 7 nights in this apartment at Glencaple, just south of Dumfries. The apartment was very well set up and maintained. The kitchen was well appointed for cooking meals. The location is great for exploring Dumfries and Galloway and even the Scottish Borders. The owners restaurant recommendations were good. Throughout the process of booking to arriving, the owners were prompt with replies and very helpful.

A fantastic apartment

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely apartment this is. It has everything you could want and more. All the fixtures and fittings are of a very high standard and you really feel spoiled. The area is beautiful and so many places to visit in a short distance. The setting couldn't be more perfect overlooking the estuary. I must mention the Nith Hotel next door. If you don't feel like cooking you will not beat the quality of the food and service and all at a very competitive price. We were made to feel very welcome by everyone. I would highly recommend for so many reasons. As Arnie says, we will be back.

Lovely Flat Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely flat, in an ideal location overlooking the Nith estuary. The shop on the quay was ideal for a morning walk for papers and the Nith Hotel which was 5 mins away served evening meals in a restaurant that overlooked the estuary. Edward & Susan

Lovely flat, lovely location

  • 5 of 5

A really really nice property, felt spacious and had everything could possibly need during our stay. My holiday emergency bag of scissors, cloths etc didn't get even unpacked! The stove was easy to use and warmed the room up easily as did the radiators when it went chilly at night. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook and was "full size" equipment not travel sized as in many other places we've stayed. Shower hot and powerful. View out of bedroom and living room right over the river. A few minutes drive brings you to Caerlaverock nature reserve with loads of birds to see as well as walks. Dumfries only 10 minutes drive and has a variety of supermarkets plus easy access to A75 for trips further afield. Definitely a holiday cottage to visit again!
