Chywood Barn - a tranquil haven

Updated: 22-Aug-2016
Chywood in Helston, Cornwall, England - Charming Period Property Set In Secluded Location

WELCOME TO POLDARK COUNTRY! If you want a rural retreat with absolute peace and tranquillity, Chywood is the place for you. Five star accommodation in a six star location in this pretty little barn that sleeps two. Chywood Barn is very traditional but with all the home comforts. Chywood Barn has its own particular charm and is much loved by visitors from all over the UK and continent. If the dreadful winter weather over Christmas and New Year 2016 has got you down, rest assured this setting will be bursting with colour once spring and summer arrive!

Chywood Barn is a detached old granite stable that was converted many years ago and modernised by the present owners. It is open plan with a full size kitchen, dining area and living room. The accommodation nestles under a beamed cathedral ceiling with a wood burning stove. Upstairs, a mezzanine double bedroom, compact en suite shower room and French windows giving access to your own entirely private garden. The property is fully equipped with everything you need to make your holiday absolutely first rate.

Equi-distant from both coasts and only three miles from the ancient market town of Helston (and the same distance from the bustling fishing port of Porthleven), the property is in a valley at the end of a private road set in two acres of garden to explore with tall trees, a lake and a family of ducks. Well served by popular public footpaths right on the doorstep, Chywood has been called by many of our visitors “a hidden gem”.

Chywood Barn is one of two holiday properties. The owners farmhouse is close by and they are on hand to help with anything you may need. Although there is a proximity to all the properties - each opens onto a large shared courtyard - no-one is overlooked thus ensuring plenty of privacy, peace and quiet and the perfect setting for your holiday.

Our weeks stay at Chy Wood Barn

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a most enjoyable holiday at Chy Wood Barn, if comfort, peace and tranquility in beautiful surroundings is what you looking for then this is the place.

The property is set set in large gardens including a very large pond with ducks and other wildlife. The barn is very comfortable with a well equipped new kitchen and a very cosy lounge area with a wood burning stove, which we made good use of in the evenings. We liked the mezzanine bedroom with the french windows opening onto a private garden with an area for sitting out when the weather permits.

On arrival we were pleasantly surprised to find that Chris had provided a welcome pack of very tasty goodies and some chilled white wine which we very much appreciated.

Chy Wood barn is ideally situated for easy access to North and South coasts and surrounding areas of interest and is close by the very picturesque village of Porthleven.

Chris and Andrew are very friendly and helpful hosts providing us with a supply of wood for the fire and kindly drying our extremely wet walking boots and clothing.

Eating out, Porthleven has a some nice restaurants and tea rooms our favorite for afternoon tea is Naughty but Ice on the harbour and for an evening meal the Atlantic Inn.

We shall be returning to Chy Wood Barn and have recommended it to our friends and family.

Owner's Response: Peter, thanks so much for those very kind words. It was lovely to have the opportunity to meet you both and we certainly very much look forward to welcoming you back. We have just about got a new seat erected down by the pond. A perfect place to take a glass of chilled white and, well, chill....! Chris and Andrew

A cosy comfortable dwelling in a quiet location!

  • 4 of 5

We loved our week's stay in Chywood barn. It was ideal for a couple, was beautifully decorated, and we loved the mezzanine with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs. It also had a lovely enclosed garden just outside the bedroom window. The location was lovely and quiet if you just want to get away from it all, but it was also a short drive to lots of interesting places like St Ives, Marazion, Mousehole, St Agnes and so on. We would definitely recommend Chywood barn and hope to return in the near future! Martin and Anna in Ballymena, Co Antrim

Owner's Response: Martin and .Anna, thank you so much for your lovely kind words, and also for pointing out the accessibility of the location to so many other places. We know we're perfectly placed between both coasts but when people who don't quite realise that read your words they'll get a good flavour of location.....and everything else! We very much hope you'll come back. We'll keep a welcome! Best wishes, Chris and Andrew

Lovely character barn accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed with this lovely barn accommodation, it's in a delightful setting surrounded by countryside, pond and ducks. The barn accommodation is of very high standard with an open plan lounge, dining , well fitted and attractive kitchen - all beautifully furnished and tastefully decorated. The bedroom is on a mezzanine level with a separate shower room. The bed is a double with a comfortable mattress and the bedroom furnished with country pine furniture. There is a private garden accessible through the windows in the bedroom with garden furniture for guest use. The owners welcomed us on arrival even supplying us with some lovely surprises -chocolates, wine, cake, biscuits and milk too.

We cannot recommend this lovely accommodation or its owners strongly enough - anyone booking it for a quiet break and a friendly welcome will not be disappointed.

Another relaxing stay at Chywood Barn

  • 5 of 5

Chywood Barn is situated in a secluded valley set in lovely grounds with a large pond with resident ducks and moorhens. We had another warm welcome from Chris and Andrew and the welcome pack of biscuits, cake and wine enabled us to relax with a drink and nibbles after a long journey.

The accommodation is very comfortable with a very well appointed kitchen, a wood fire is provided for chilly evenings. Outside there is a private seating area that is accessed through the bedroom on the mezzanine floor.

Chris and Andrew make sure that your stay is as comfortable as possible with nothing too much trouble.

Many thanks to Chris and Andrew for providing a wonderfull place to stay. Looking forward to a return next year.

Great Cornwall Stay

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Chywood Barn. It is in a great location to explore the Cornwall coast. Our host Chris was fantastic, from the wine, cakes, chocs discovered on arrival to going out of her way to check out walking paths, nothing was too much trouble. We have no hesitation in recommending Chywood to other Aussies !!! ☺

Owner's Response: Thanks for that Rod. We always try to help our overseas visitors get the most out of this beautiful area - it likes to hide the footpaths whenever possible! Hope you are both enjoying the rest of your extended trip. If you do come back over again, I do hope you'll put us on your list of places to revisit. Best wishes Chris and Andrew

From the Owner

We fell in love with Chywood the minute we saw it in 2003 and both knew instantly it was ‘home’. The original house was built in around 1850 and has been added to since. It’s believed it was the mine captain’s house for the local Wheal Vor mine. One of the massive engine houses is visible from the garden. At some time in the past it was a working farm. We have updated and refurnished it, entirely refitting the kitchen in 2014. Our other holiday property was a self build, started from scratch. We are both keen golfers and members at Falmouth. We have made some good friends through the years with the holiday business and have our band of regulars who return annually and it’s always good to see them. We feel very fortunate to share our home with so many lovely people.

From the Owner

It’s location and it’s peace and quiet. There is no road noise and plenty of good walks to enjoy direct from the property. Ideally placed access to all the attractions Cornwall has to offer on both coasts and a great place to return to at the end of the day for a glass of something nice and watch the sun go down – and maybe see the barn owls flying in the field next door if you’re very lucky.
