Mariner's View - Self-Catering Holiday Cottage In Weymouth

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-Nov-2016
Cottage in Weymouth, Dorset, England

Mariner's View is one in a small row of terraced cottages, looking directly south, situated at the tip of the mainland just before the causeway that connects with Portland. The outstanding feature of the cottage is the views. Some of the photographs in the panel above are taken from the cottage windows. Other views are taken from the South coast path, which passes close to the front door. From the end of the terrace there are uninterrupted views of the white cliffs of Ringstead. To the west you see the Chesil Beach, and straight ahead are the yachts and wind-surfers in Portland Harbour, backed by the long sloping line of Portland.

About the Owner

I used to live in Weymouth. I think of it as my home town, as that is where I grew up and went to school - learning to swim with the aid of a car inner tube in the sea at Greenhill and Ringstead and Durdle Door.

Husband's job brought us to Bristol, but as soon as the opportunity arose I bought Mariner's View - rather run down, and in a bad state of repair. Now, all done up, I love the cottage, and go there (and also visit my sister who still lives in the old family home) as often as possible. I hope you, too, will like the cottage, as much as I do.

Location

From the Owner

There are few cottages with views to beat this one. The Chesil Beach is practically on the doorstep, the shoreline is a 3-minute stroll away, and you don't need to get in a car to go to a café, or to watch sailing and wind-surfing.

It is a 20-minute walk along the Rodwell Trail (one of Julia Bradbury's Railway Walks) to the beach of Castle Cove which is overlooked by Sandsfoot Castle (Henry VIII), and a further 25 minutes along the trail to Weymouth's inner harbour. Chesil Beach and the Fleet Lagoon are just across the main road from the cottage.

Further Details:

Amenities

Just up the Portland Road there are shops, takeaways, bank, health centre, sailing and angling equipment stores, pubs and restaurants.

Sailing

The Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy which hosted the 2012 Sailing Olympics, is exactly 1 mile from the cottage, along the Portland Beach Road, and its blue building can be seen easily from the bedroom window (anyone can go in to look around and for snacks).

Walking

The Rodwell Trail, which starts at Ferrybridge, follows the line of the old railway track, which, if you like walking (3/4 hour) takes you to the centre of Weymouth close to the inner harbour. Stop and explore Sandsfoot Castle and gardens on your way. Weymouth's sandy beach and safe, shallow sea bathing is just a 10-minute car ride away. (Details of masses of other attractions are in the cottage).

Portland Harbour

The cottage is only 200 yards from the shoreline of Portland Harbour and the little cove of Smallmouth Bay with rocks and a sandy beach. Just across the main Portland Road is the unique Fleet lagoon: a glass-bottomed boat from the jetty provides trips around this nature reserve, and the Chesil Beach visitor centre (with cafe) is just 15 minutes walk from the cottage, along the Portland Beach Road. In May and June, the grassy causeway is a mass of sea pinks (or thrift).

Out and About

Mariner's View is ideally situated for exploring the coastline going west - to Abbotsbury and the Swannery, to Burton Bradstock, then on to Golden Cap and Lyme Regis (a favourite for fossil-hunters). Inland, there are beautiful walks around Hardy's Monument (Captain Hardy of Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, not the author Thomas Hardy): visit Upwey wishing well (the source of the River Wey): climb the grassy ramparts of Maiden Castle, an iron-age fort near Dorchester. Go eastwards to walk along the spectacular cliffs from Bowleaze to Redcliff Point, on to Ringstead, Lulworth and Durdle Door.
