Typically French Property In Peaceful Established Garden Overlooking Small Lake - La Maison - Sleeps 4 (2 Bedrooms)

Updated: 15-Mar-2016
Trente et Un in Montmorillon, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France - Truly Rural Yet Within 1 Hours Drive Of Beautiful Limoges And Poitiers

Traditional gite in idyllic setting, in peaceful established garden overlooking small lake, available to fish & well stocked with Carp & Roach etc. Ideal for the keen fisherman. Bicycles are available to use free of charge yet is within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and markets of the ancient 'Cité d'Ecrit' on the River Gartempe. Free WiFi is available. Walking, cycling or just browsing in old bookshops. Local public swimming pool within a 5 minute walk away consisting of indoor & outdoor pools. Truly rural yet within 1 hours drive of beautiful Limoges and Poitiers. Local attractions are plentiful such as kayaking & velo-railing. Nearby is the market town of Chauvigny with a huge and bustling market on Thursdays and Saturdays by the river bank. Above it, in the old town, are five medieval castles to explore as well as the brightly painted St Pierre church. In the main square are two very popular restaurants. The high-tech film and science leisure park Futuroscope (http://en.futuroscope.com) with its towering cinema pavilions set in landscaped, fountain-filled gardens (the latter are the focus of a sunset laser show), is definitely one of the star tourist attractions of the Vienne. You need at least a day to see it and as well as all the attractions it has plenty of restaurants and cafes so you can stop and re-fuel along the way! There are a number of animal-themed attractions too.

A great day out, especially if you have children, is the Vallée des Singes, where a variety of monkeys and apes including gorillas lives in natural surroundings. Nearby is the new La Planete des Crocodiles, where you can see 200 of the reptiles from all over the world, in five biospheres (glass domes) that reflect their native continents. Given its history, it’s not surprising that the Vienne is known for its Romanesque architecture, the most famous site being the Abbey Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, a UNESCO world heritage site that’s nicknamed the ‘Romanesque Sistine Chapel’. For those who love messing about on or by the water, the Vienne river offers plenty of choice with prime places for fishing as well as swimming, canoeing and even yachting. There are also a number of fine golf courses near Poitiers and elsewhere in the Vienne. And of course, this being France, you’re guaranteed good food. A local speciality is goat’s cheese – make sure you try Chabis or Chabichou, both of which have been awarded Protected Designation of Origin – the French AOC. Another major attraction is the wine of the Vienne. Wine has been made in this region for hundreds of years. And though the wines of the Haut-Poitou as they are known don’t quite have the cache of those further north in the Loire Valley, there are some excellent red, white and rosé wines to be found here.

Lovely property - relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

We went to Montmorillon seeking a week of relaxation and that is exactly what we found. La Maison, true to its description, was set in a lovely garden with space to sit and read, play games or just enjoy the wildlife. Surrounded by trees and with a little lake behind you would be forgiven for thinking you were far away from any town. However, Montmorillon was only a pleasant 10 minute walk away. It's a charming town with plenty of interest and the market day really brought it to life. We explored the area on bikes (there are cycles to use at La Maison) - if you enjoy cycling then there are miles and miles of car-free country lanes. On one day we took our bikes to la Brenne and had a brilliant day exploring the lakes and birdlife of the parc naturel. La Maison itself was great for a family - spacious, comfortable, well-maintained and the owner was very helpful in providing information. This is a quiet and understated area, and that is a great part of its charm. There’s lots more we’d like to explore and we'll certainly visit again.

A wonderful gite...

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic visit, staying in La Maison for two weeks. The property is lovely and has everything you would need, the owners have thought of everything and the house was so homely. The most impressive thing for us was the grounds, they are so spacious yet private and safe which was great for us with two small children. The town is only a ten minute walk away and we enjoyed wandering in late afternoon for a look round the shops and a glass of something chilled! Area great with something to suit everyone. Fantastic beach lakes and pools as well as activities all within short drives. We particularly loved the Velorail at Chauvigny and the tree top challenge at Lac St Pardoux. Great value for money property and we will definitely be returning!! Kids still talk about it ten months later!
