About Paul and Christine Swailes

We are two retired teachers who have enjoyed living and working in North Devon for more than a quarter of a century. We love walking, photography and the great outdoors and have yet to exhaust the potential of this area.

Paul and Christine Swailes purchased this house in 2006

Why Paul and Christine Swailes chose Ilfracombe

We love Ilfracombe and we always have. We have worked in the community for years and think it has so much to offer. As far as the house is concerned it was the views which sold it to us. Waking up and looking out across the Bristol Channel never disappoints - the view changes every day. When we had a family the big house was great and now grandchildren are on the horizon it will come into its own again!

What makes this house unique

This is a comfortable family home. It is well equipped with everything you could or would need to make your stay special. Over the years the needs of our family have changed and we have found that this area has been great at each and every stage. from bucket and spade, rock-pooling, crabbing, and paddling in the sea to skate boarding, climbing, surfing and coasteering - it is all here and more. It is just a short walk to everything in the town so you do not need to use the car while you are here to shop, eat or be entertained!

Great place for a big family get together

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week to celebrate my 60th birthday with my grown up children and their partners. It was a real home from home, very well equipped with plenty of crockery & glasses so we could make best use of the dishwasher, and every kitchen gadget you could think of! Chris and Paul loads of nice little extra touches - thanks so much for the flowers and birthday card! Amazing views from the front of the house, especially from the master bedroom, absolutely breathtaking. Massive bonus to have parking for 4 cars at the back of the house and the hot tub and barbeque were great! We all had a fabulous holiday, it was a very special time.

Beautiful house, lovely owners - and the best chocolate brownies ever!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at this well- equipped, spacious and warm house with plenty of room for everyone to be together or have a bit of "quiet time" when needed! Even though it rained for some of our stay it didn't spoil our holiday - there's plenty of little towns to explore nearby and loads of really good pubs and restaurants to try. The welcome pack provided was really good, including a bottle of wine, and a cake stand of the most delicious brownies - they had to be home made!

There are lots of books and games around, a lot of thought has gone into making this a real "home from home" - and the views over the sea are amazing!!

The only things I would mention (and in no way did it spoil our time in the Georgian House, but may be useful for other travellers) is that with 3 medium size cars and a Range Rover, parking was very tight! Also, our family are all "morning showerers" and that was difficult as the water pressure was a bit tricky and the shower in the top rooms rarely worked, so it meant staggering our showers and using other bathrooms. However, Chris and Paul did their best to resolve this and, again, we managed fine.

A great house, really thoughtful and helpful owners, and a brilliant holiday!

Fantastic house , everything was of a good quality and perfect location for our visit.

  • 5 of 5

We came to Ilfracombe for a wedding and a weeks holiday we stayed in the house with 2 other families. Within our group we had 6 adults and 6 children ranging from 1 to 11years old. The house was a perfect size we never felt cramped, there were plenty of decent sized bedrooms for us all and bathrooms. The owners have been fantastic throughout our booking and stay. The house is well decorated, furnished and well equipped as well as being in a prime position for a short walk to many places in Ilfracombe. We investigated a lot of houses in the area for our stay but the Georgian town house ticked all the boxes as well as being reasonably priced. We would stay here again and highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a positive review. The competitive price for a stay at The Georgian House includes the hot tub, good quality linen, towels and utilities for up to 10 guests. This makes a holiday to The Georgian House shared between a number of families very affordable. The aim is to provide everything our guests would have at home, maybe even more. We try to build up a relationship with our guests during the booking process and feel we know a little about them before they arrive. Guests can book with confidence, knowing they are coming to a genuine, high quality holiday home.

A home from home with spectacular views!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week with our two girls aged 5 and 9, and my parents, we all wanted to stay longer!

We were greeted with fresh flowers, cake and a bottle of wine, even fresh milk in the fridge, such a welcoming personal touch, we felt at home instantly.

The house is stunning with original features throughout, every room is grand and better equipped than my own home!

The sea view is not restricted to the master bedroom pictured but can be seen from all front facing rooms over the 4 floors so no one misses out!

They have thought about everyone in this house and provided CD's, books for all ages, jigsaws, games...it's impossible to be bored! The girls were thrilled at the amount of floors and rooms, they felt like princesses in a castle.

I advise you read the welcome book so that you can use the facilities correctly, such as the hot tub and spa bath.

If you are getting dressed up for an occasion and it involves walking from the house then please take a pair of flat shoes to wear until you get there, heels and hills don't mix! Even supermodels don't fall gracefully!

The nearest shop is literally 5 minutes walk down the hill, getting down is the easy part, walking back with the shopping is a challenge..

If you have family members who struggle with mobility then I would not recommend this house, unless you're happy to drive them to and from the beaches and local sights.

There is everything in this house you would need to move in and relax for the night, simple things like salt and pepper, sauces, cooking oil, t-bags, as long as they are replenished for the next guests, I found this to be a generous and thoughtful touch.

If you find yourself watching TV at any point, it is huge with a very impressive screen and surround sound, there are a number of take aways in the area who deliver too.

We ate at the local tapas bar (I recommend booking here as they were fully booked most of the week) and we enjoyed it very much.

The harbour is lovely both day and night and well worth the walking.

Back to the house....

It is clean and very tidy, some of the decor is a little worn such as the paper in the main bathroom but that is to be expected in a home so popular, and with 4 others to use we were barely in there anyway!

All in all we loved this beautiful home and the surroundings and we would recommend it for a family holiday, thank you to Chris and Paul for sharing your beautiful home and possessions with us!

Stylish splendour and comfort with far reaching sea views from many of the large Georgian windows

  • 5 of 5

Every comfort catered for- even helps to keep you fit with the stairs over 3 floors and use of table tennis set.

It takes a little while to get used to the steep walk back from the beaches but the views on your return are well worth it

Everything provided for a comfortable and welcoming stay- even including fresh flowers, cake and wine on arrival

The spa bath proved very popular with my young nephew

There's lovely original pictures and prints adorning the walls painted by he talented owner and some are even for sale at very reasonable prices

All made for a lovely family break

Many thanks to Chris and Paul

Owner's Response: Lovely to meet you and your family last week and we are glad you had such a good time. Ilfracombe is renowned for being hilly but as you say it's worth it for the views. We try to provide a homely but stylish environment and we're glad to hear you liked Paul's paintings of the local area.

Lovely period house with great sea views

  • 5 of 5

The house is conveniently located close to the harbour, through steep streets and steps, and shops and restaurants are also very easily accessible on foot. The house is very confortable, nicely decorated and the views over the sea and Ilfracombe coast line from both lounges and from the master bedroom are fantastic. We appreciated both the gaz and the log fire, and also the fact that the kitchen is well equipped for cooking. We were welcome with a bottle of fizzy wine and a nice postcard of Ilfracombe painted by the owner. It was spacious enough for all of us, being a family of ten with children and elderly, and we had a great week. Thank you!

Further Details:

Ilfracombe has something for everyone and a week’s stay has photo opportunities around every corner.

Take a trip down to the harbour to see Damien Hirst's 'Verity' and while away an hour to people watch in one of the cafes or wine bars on the Quay. For the children there is a sandy beach at low tide, the aquarium, or crabbing off the pier, and of course the penny arcades are always a bit of a holiday treat! A pony trap or the land train can be a fun way to see the sights. Check out what's on at The Landmark Theatre, the cinema, or one of the many pubs which offer live entertainment. The Tourist Information office at The Landmark and the 'Visit Ilfracombe' website will provide more information on all festivals and events. Fore Street is renowned for its choice and variety of restaurants and there are many other eateries dotted around the town. Ilfracombe is a creative centre. A large number of artists live and work in or around the town. As well as art galleries on the High Street, seafront and around the harbour their work is exhibited at festivals and events during the summer season. A great souvenir to take back from your holiday. For more active pursuits why not try your hand at surfing, pony trekking, quad biking, coasteering, or simply walk the coastal path and drink in the beautiful scenery around the North Devon coastline. For those wishing to venture further afield a trip to Lynton and Lynmouth will not disappoint. Known in Victorian times as the English Alps the Lyn Valley offers excellent walking and is the gateway to The Exmoor National Park. No visit to the seaside would be complete without a boat trip. You can pick up cruises of varying lengths from the harbour or for the more adventurous a day trip to Lundy Island aboard the Oldenburg comes highly recommended.

What next? Maybe a day at Combe Martin Wildlfe Park, or Exmoor Zoo or The Milky Way, or Watermouth Castle, or The Big Sheep, or Tarka Tennis. Maybe a week is just not long enough!
