House/Villa With Open Plan Living And Fabulous Views With Large, Sunny Decking Area

Updated: 08-Oct-2016
House in L'Herm, Ariege, Midi-Pyrenees, France - Peaceful, Rural Location - Ideal For Walking, Hiking, Horseriding, Kayaking and Winter Skiing.

This lovely, bright, newly decorated open plan house is situated in a small hamlet just 10 minutes from Foix with excellent access to all the major towns including Mirepoix, Carcassonne and Toulouse and to the Mediterranean beaches, Cathar Castles, Andorra and the Pyrenees. The house is built on 2 levels with the kitchen/living/dining area, the sunny deck, master bedroom and ensuite shower room, 2nd bedroom, family bathroom, and laundry room all on the first floor. The ground floor/basement houses the guest suite with French Doors and lovely views, with ensuite shower room as well as ample undercover parking for 2 cars. Large windows all around make this house very light and bright and the floor plan make this an ideal house for relaxing and entertaining, both indoors and outdoors. There is ample parking both undercover and outside for multiple cars.

Baragne is also an ideal location for a winter holiday with the 2 closest 'Alpine Skiing' resorts (Ax les 3 domaines and Mont d'Olmes) only about an hour away and the 2 cross country skiing reorts of Plateau de Beille and Chioula are about 1 hour and a half. Plateau de Beille has excellent facilities for children with tobogganing, and dog sledding. We have a very large wood burning fire which keeps the house wonderfully warm, as well as radiators in all the bedrooms and plenty of warm duvets! There is a wealth of information about the ski resorts if you Google 'Ariege Skiing', or feel free to ask us any questions.

About the Owner

We are Brian and Georgette Harries, a British couple who have lived in many countries all over the world thanks to a career managing luxury hotel properties. We live in England with our teenage son and spend our time between there and France - the Ariege region is perfect for active teenagers; our son loves rock climbing and kayaking and we love to cook and entertain. We love the markets and we love walking and hiking and discovering hidden gems whether they be panoramic views, restaurants in perfect settings or local seasonal produce.. but recent commitments have us spending more time in England, so we have decided to share our home away from home and look forward to introducing others to the delights of Baragne and the Ariege region.

Amazing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We've had amazing 2 weeks in L'herm. The house was more that we expected and in an amazing beautiful location with breath taking views, perfect spot for the outdoorsy nature lovers. We had our dogs with us and enjoyed exploring the local and regional spots every day. There are beautiful hikes in the area, amazing lakes, castles, caves but unfortunately even 2 weeks wasn't enough to see it all.

The owners Brian & Georgette very friendly and helpful if any assistance required, also very nice French neighbours. Thank you Brian & Georgette for a wonderful holiday, we will definitely visit again. Justina & Gary

Dear Georgette and Brian,

we had a wonderful time in your house and loved it.

The house is very spacious and we enjoyed your terrasse and its view very much.

The owners were very helpful príor to arrival, they gave us helpful directions and the neighbours were here to welcome us and there was even a nice welcomming basket in the kitchen.

There are plenty of things to do in the direct neighbourhood or within a short drive distance.

Thank you very much again, and we would love to come back!

From the Owner

We have always loved France, and the French way of life and spent about 10 years searching for 'that special place'. Having explored everywhere from Provence to Aude, we eventually discovered the Ariege region and fell in love with the whole area. Mountains, castles, lakes, rivers and waterfalls - it has everything we were looking for and when we found 'Baragne' - one look and the decision was made! Baragne has the total 'wow' factor we were looking for! Driving up through the hamlet does not prepare you for what you about to find... On entering the house all is revealed - the tranquillity and privacy are second to none, and yes we are biased but we absolutely love it! We bought the house 5 years ago and have spent a large part of our time there, bringing it up to our high standards.

Activity and Interests

The house is approximately 2 hours from the beaches at Narbonne and there are beaches to the north and south of that including all the coastal resorts right down to the Spanish border with plenty of wonderful restaurants and activities.

The house is 65 miles (1 1/4 hours) from Toulouse Airport and 50 miles (1 hour 20 mins) from Carcassonne Airport.

Calais to the house is 660 miles.

The nearest town for shopping is Foix with its wonderful Chateau situated right in the centre and Friday market, only 6 miles from the house.

Pamiers is 30 minutes away, Toulouse 1 hour, Mirepoix, 40 mins and 1 hour 30 to Carcassonne. Andorra with all its wonderful duty free shopping and petrol is only 2 hours and 15 minutes away.

We are surrounded by Cathar Castles - Montsegur is only 17 miles (40 minutes) away and we have walking access to the Sentier Cathar, and to Roquefixade.

Further Details:

Foix is a lovely town, partly pedestrianised, with its wonderful Chateau and weekly Friday market and lots of cafes and restaurants. It has the major supermarkets of Intermarche and E LeClerc both with petrol. Foix is on the train line to Toulouse and to Tarascon and Ax Les Thermes and La Tour de Carol for connection to the touristic Little Yellow Train (Le Petit Train Jaune).

Mirepoix with its medieval, half-timbered houses, wood pillars and covered arcades and numerous cafes is well worth a visit at any time but the weekly Monday market is a must-see, the best in the region.

Ariege is a wonderful area to explore with numerous Castles, walks, rivers, medieval Churches and villages. There is hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, horseriding and drives around the National Parks. Driving into the mountains to find 'hidden' lakes and panoramic views is one of the many delights.

The stunning, walled city of Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi are easily accessed from the house, also St Girons and the beautiful St Lizier.

We are also close to Labouiche, the underground river, and to many famous caves including the awe inspiring Grotte de Niaux (must be pre-booked and is well worth the effort being one of the only truly original and unspoilt cave drawing sites still open to the public).

As well as Montsegur, there are also castles at Roquefixade (as well as a fabulous, eclectic little restaurant) and at Chateau Lordat, all close by.

Driving into the mountains through Tarascon, Vicdessous and Ax les Thermes is easy with excellent roads and stunning scenery to be discovered.

There are walks and hikes to suit all ages and abilities from the newly opened Chemin Vert (the Green Way) along the old rail tracks from Foix to St Girons and another from Mirepoix, right up to the hiking paths in the mountains such as the Sentier Cathar.

From the Owner

We call 'Baragne' our sanctuary and it really does feel like that to us. We have wonderful access to all the major routes if we want to get out and about exploring all the delights of the area, or if we just want to kick back and relax - 'Baragne' is such a stress-free environment that within minutes of being there, we feel ourselves unwinding. Depending on the time of year, the changing seasons all have something wonderful to offer, whether it is the brilliant winter snow, the fabulous Spring flowers and waterfalls, or the deer, foxes and wild boar in our fields and woods in the Summer and Autumn. Our large deck overlooking the fields with the stream running alongside, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunshine, for breakfast, lunch and for a perfect evening bbq...

  • Notes on accommodation: Please note that whilst this house does have over 15 acres of fields in the area, some of which are close to the house, there is no direct access to them from our property. Also we do not have any fences so whilst we do accept pets, the lack of fencing should be considered. For the same reason, and the large outside deck, this property might not suit those with very young children. We are non-smokers and would very much appreciate that the house be kept as a non-smoking area. Outside: This house has a very large, sunny decking area which is fenced but possibly not suitable for very small children. There is outdoor furniture, tables and chairs to seat 8 and a small bbq and patio umbrella. Please note that we do not have fences around our property. Utility Room: Washing Machine Tumble Dryer Drying Rack Iron/Ironing Board Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and Linen are included, to be changed on a weekly basis. Other: Basement has second fridge/freezer Large Deck with outdoor furniture, sun parasol and BBQ.
