About the property

Chateau in Ingrandes, Indre-et-Loire, Loire Valley, Centre, France

Chateau La Taupanne, available for exclusive self-catering use, sits in 26 acres of private park and forest. It retains its original features and was recently restored in an uncluttered style with a mixture of antique and vintage finds. The 8 bedrooms are unusually served by 6 bathrooms and 2 further WC's. 5 reception rooms include a comfortable salon with wide-screen TV and English free-view channels, Wii and DVD library, a large dining room seating 12, a quiet reading room, and a billiard room with full sized antique snooker table that the men seem to disappear into after dinner! The grounds are wonderful including a 12m x 6m heated pool-with-a-panoramic-view, hard pool cover to safeguard kids and good sized steps into teh pool for toddlers to sit on. Neat rather than perfectly manicured the grounds are an oasis of tranquility, whether exploring the pathways in the woods or drinking in the 180 degree view from the BBQ terrace with a drink in hand. Between Tours and Poitiers, ideal for day trips to Loire Chateaux and vineyards, Puy du Fou or Futuroscope theme parks. Paris 1hr 15 by TGV for sightseeing, shopping or Disneyland.

About Joanna Tinworth

My obsession with beautiful old houses and work as a freelance curator and architectural historian prompted me to buy La Taupanne. Virtually untouched since 1946, when I saw it in 2004 it was in a sorry state, my husband thought I was mad! But it had 8 bedrooms, all the fabulous proportions and original features that you see today now with the sensitive addition of 6 bathrooms, a modern kitchen and a heated pool. We have loved renovating it: even the solid 24 hours spent chipping the only modern tiles in the place up to reveal an historic mosaic floor! The house and grounds are beautiful now. However busy lives mean that we can't be there as often as we would like, so we are renting it in order to fund further landscaping to the garden and forest, and in time a new gravel driveway.

Joanna Tinworth purchased this chateau / country house in 2004

A Great Time Was Had By All.

  • 5 of 5

Three families celebrating my 50th birthday and we had a fantastic holiday. We loved the house and the pool and even though the weather didn't always play ball - we certainly had one! Thanks very much for a great stay!

Owner's Response: Dear T.B. I'm so glad that you had a good break and that you enjoyed your birthday celebrations. I do hope that the restaurant I recommended was good for all the age groups in your extended family. I'm also pleased that the heat in the pool made up for a few days of rogue bad weather - we love it even on chilly days! If you ever want to return please do get in touch, we have a 10% discount for repeat visitors. All best, Jo.

Fantastic Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Great place to have a large family gathering! Amazing place! We travelled with our family (9 of us, including 3 kids) it's large enough that everyone has their own space if needed. The pool is lovely! Eating outside over looking the country side is fantastic. House is well equipped, kitchen is great for cooking large meals, comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms in most rooms. Walking trails in the forest was fun to explore. Lots of stuff to entertain kids.

Convenient location next to Chattellerault were you can find many supermarkets and stores for anything you need.

We had a fantastic holiday and would recommend to anyone to stay here!

Owner's Response: Dear RW / VS, I'm so pleased that you had a great time at the chateau and I do hope that your family celebration went well? We do think that it is a good place for extended family holidays - as you say the 6 bathroom's are a treat alongside the 8 bedrooms so no-one is queuing to brush their teeth and the 4 reseption rooms and big park and forest mean that everyone can always find their own space. And the view across the valley IS amazing. I'm so glad that kids and adults alike had a good time, that you found everything you wanted in the local town and that you would reccommend us. Huge thanks for taking the time to write a review. Kind regards, Jo Tinworth,

Ignore the details of the property and take everything you need

  • 3 of 5

The chateau is charming and the pool when we left was great.

The ovens were very dirty ,crockery was chipped.

The very few grey [white] towels some of which were in holes were in some rooms limited to 1hand towel. The instructions were keen on them not being taken to the pool!

We were told when we arrived that the pool cover was broken and was not able to be fixed which mean't we could not keep the temp. up after a visit 3days into our stay by the caretaker 's husband it was fixed.Again copious instructions on pool do's and don'ts.

The shower head in one of the en-suites was broken which my son repaired.

A broken toilet seat was replaced by the caretaker

The Caretaker did have an road accident during our visit but her husband was very helpful.

I feel that the problems with this property are due to lack of money being spent on basics this maybe due to the fact it is for sale.

We certainly felt it was left in better useable condition than when we arrived.

There were 10 people in the end who used the chateau, the location is a delight but we were disappointed with these issues which could be so easily rectified.

Owner's Response: Dear Ann H, I am very sorry some aspects of your stay disappointed you. Family holidays are precious & it is our aim that nothing at the chateau should spoil them. We take renting the chateau seriously. The for sale sign you saw relates to the house at the end of the drive, not the chateau. It's not our intention that towels be in short supply or crockery chipped: following your feedback we'll check and replace over the winter. I know my caretaker offered you spare towels usually used by my family when she visited and hope they helped. The caretaker advised you on arrival the small shower head in one bathroom was broken but the big shower head over the same bath was working and she'd repair the small one during the week. The car accident intervened and she was in hospital for 36 hours so I appreciate your son's efforts with it during his holiday, I'm sure he would rather not have done it. I am sorry too that you struggled with the pool cover. I'm told the cover was working upon your arrival - we do always check as the lovely warm heated pool it is critical to everyone's enjoyment, hence the detailed instructions. I believe you were advised not that it was broken but that it was delicate, so not to open and close it repeatedly during the day, just shut it overnight to keep the heat in. Two things keep the pool warm effectively: having the pool cover on overnight and the filter system working to keep the clean water pumping through the heater. When you reported the cover jammed open I'm glad the caretaker's husband was able to repair it. He had surgery to re-attach the finger almost severed in the car accident the weekend you arrived, so the trip to you was a struggle but worthwhile as he was able to remove your small pool toys that were clogging the filter system and reset the key for the cover so that you could enjoy the warm pool for the rest of your stay. Everyone who visits the chateau raves about the large, wonderfully heated pool, so I'm pleased you were able to enjoy it's warmth after his visit. I'm glad that you liked the location and size of the chateau, it's a beautiful place for an extended family holiday. We've only ever had 5 star reviews on the chateau, including guests that stayed the weeks before and after you and work hard to achieve them. Many enjoy a wonderful time there, I’m glad you experienced some of that. Sorry again if some aspects were not as expected or the caretakers car accident inconvenienced you. Best wishes, Jo T

Beautiful chateau full of character

  • 5 of 5

As a family of 16 (inc 6 toddlers/children), we had a brilliant time. It'a a beautiful property, with masses of space for everyone to have own bedrooms and bathrooms. Lovely heated pool and views over the countryside while eating. Near a village but very quiet and private. Recommended.

Owner's Response: Dear Charlotte S Thanks so much for the review and I am glad that there was space for all your party - toddlers are small but they can be very noisy: we've found ourselves that even with lots of kids visitingthere are enough reception rooms (5) and such a lot of grounds that there is always somewhere to go for peace and quiet. The heated pool is also a saviour for all ages, much fun to be had there. I'm glad you enjoyed the stay. If you ever want to come back, plese get in touch, there is a 10% discount for repeat bookings. All best, Jo.

A very relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time at the house. Even with 10 adults and 7 toddlers the house and grounds still felt spacious and peaceful. The views across the surrounding countryside were a stunning backdrop for dinner on the terrace every night and the heated pool was a real treat.

Owner's Response: Dear John, Thanks so much for the response, I'm so pleased that you had a great holiday, and also that the chateau worked well for a group as big as yours. We do find it works well for extended families or 2-3 families who are friends. I think its the fact that there are plenty of reception rooms, and far more bathrooms than is usual in an old property so no-one is ever tripping over anyone else. And our kids love the huge heated pool too. If you are ever tempted to come back with the same, or different friends we'd love to have you, you left the place in great condistion, and we offer a 10% discount for repeat bookings. Thanks alot, Jo.

Superb family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Taupanne for a week in September 2014, looking for a venue for our family holiday in 2016. It was absolutely perfect. Two daughters, two son-in-laws and 4 granddaughters (6, 3, 3 and 10 months) all had the most amazing time. The chateau is so family friendly catering for ALL ages. Plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing whilst lots of areas for family gathering together. Easy shopping in Chatelleraut and Ingrandes provides boulangerie, alimentation and boucherie (and the thrill of standing on the bridge when the TGV hurtles through). Jackie was quick to answer any queries and sort out any little problems (of which there were few). Family stayed 12 days, we equally enjoyed our peaceful week, a deux. Well equipped, clean, superb pool, wonderful outdoor space; not to be missed.

Location

Travel:

Two local airports are served by low-cost airline 'Ryanair' making Chateau de la Taupanne easily accessible:

- Poitiers airport - 35 minutes

- Tours airport 1 hr

For guests who prefer to take the cross channel ferry the Chateau is within driving distance:

- Caen, approximately 3.5 hours drive

- Calais, approximately 5 hours drive

Distances:

The best way to explore this wonderful part of France is by car and we recommend that you bring or hire one.

- Ingrandes (for fresh bread) is 1.5k, a 20 minute walk through the fields or 4 min drive

- Chatellerault (for the market on Thursdays and Saturdays, restaurants, shops, banks) is 6km, an 8-10 minute drive

Further Details:

The Loire Valley is known for its wine, castles and gastronomy, there are also kids attractions

WINE

We recommend 'The New France' wine guide to visit local and regional wine makers. Wine tasting can be enjoyed at Chinon, around 45 minutes drive, including great tasting great value wines from Charles Joguet or Bernard Baudry in Cravant-les-Coteaux. Further afield 2-3 vineyards in Sancerre or Pouilly-fume can be reached in a full day trip along beautiful scenic routes.

CHATEAUX

The ruined Castle at Chinon is picturesque and there are some typical brasseries in the market square of this quaint town. But the 'heavy hitting' Loire Chateaux are also within easy reach, Azay le Rideau is well worth a visit for its fabulous gardens, and Chambord and Chenonceau are a must: Blois and Amboise are also popular.

GASTRONOMY

All gourmands will follow their noses - or their michelin guide - to great places to eat across the region. In Chatellerault, our local market town we would recommend 'La Gourmandine' offering indoor and outdoor fine dining in a grand 'belle époque' townhouse. Fixed price menus range from €25-€72 or you can eat a la carte, and an extensive wine list is available. We also like 'La Ferme St Jacques', a great rotisserie that serves 'farm fresh' meat and vegetables and great puddings in a rustic building. Finally there are plenty of cafes on the main square and market square to enjoy lunch or a coffee at when you go to explore the market on Thursday or Saturday.

KIDS

You may want a kids day out. Futuroscope, one of the largest theme parks in France is less than 30 minutes away. It is indescribable - sort of Octonauts meets 2001 Space Odyssey with a dose of the Science & Natural History Museum thrown in: do check the website! Puy du fou, around 1hr 45 minutes away is a Disney-esque swashbuckling ride through French history from vikings to chateaux via the three musketeers with heaps of restaurants and awesome evening 'spectacle' shows, worth the drive.
