Large Restored Chateau, Large Heated Pool, Panoramic Views, Close To Market Town

Overview

Property

Updated: 14-Nov-2016
Chateau in Ingrandes, Indre-et-Loire, Loire Valley, Centre, France

Chateau La Taupanne, available for exclusive self-catering use, sits in 26 acres of private park and forest. It retains its original features and was recently restored in an uncluttered style with a mixture of antique and vintage finds. The 8 bedrooms are unusually served by 6 bathrooms and 2 further WC's. 5 reception rooms include a comfortable salon with wide-screen TV and English free-view channels, Wii and DVD library, a large dining room seating 12, a quiet reading room, and a billiard room with full sized antique snooker table that the men seem to disappear into after dinner! The grounds are wonderful including a 12m x 6m heated pool-with-a-panoramic-view, hard pool cover to safeguard kids and good sized steps into teh pool for toddlers to sit on. Neat rather than perfectly manicured the grounds are an oasis of tranquility, whether exploring the pathways in the woods or drinking in the 180 degree view from the BBQ terrace with a drink in hand. Between Tours and Poitiers, ideal for day trips to Loire Chateaux and vineyards, Puy du Fou or Futuroscope theme parks. Paris 1hr 15 by TGV for sightseeing, shopping or Disneyland.

About the Owner

My obsession with beautiful old houses and work as a freelance curator and architectural historian prompted me to buy La Taupanne. Virtually untouched since 1946, when I saw it in 2004 it was in a sorry state, my husband thought I was mad! But it had 8 bedrooms, all the fabulous proportions and original features that you see today now with the sensitive addition of 6 bathrooms, a modern kitchen and a heated pool. We have loved renovating it: even the solid 24 hours spent chipping the only modern tiles in the place up to reveal an historic mosaic floor! The house and grounds are beautiful now. However busy lives mean that we can't be there as often as we would like, so we are renting it in order to fund further landscaping to the garden and forest, and in time a new gravel driveway.

Superb family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Taupanne for a week in September 2014, looking for a venue for our family holiday in 2016. It was absolutely perfect. Two daughters, two son-in-laws and 4 granddaughters (6, 3, 3 and 10 months) all had the most amazing time. The chateau is so family friendly catering for ALL ages. Plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing whilst lots of areas for family gathering together. Easy shopping in Chatelleraut and Ingrandes provides boulangerie, alimentation and boucherie (and the thrill of standing on the bridge when the TGV hurtles through). Jackie was quick to answer any queries and sort out any little problems (of which there were few). Family stayed 12 days, we equally enjoyed our peaceful week, a deux. Well equipped, clean, superb pool, wonderful outdoor space; not to be missed.

Beautiful property with loads to do for all ages and interests - great for families, ate alfresco everyday and watched amazing sunsets, electric storms and hot air balloons. Jo and Denise housekeeper couldnt have been more helpful. Highly recommend.

Perfect for large families

  • 5 of 5

The chateau was perfect for our extended family - we had 26 people through the door over our two weeks, adults the first week and children and grandchildren the second. No-one got in anyone's way; there is plenty of space for being sociable or retiring. The billiards room was not used in daylight hours - just for silly games after supper! The play room was wonderful for the small people and the cricket net was a boon for the older boys, sons, sons-in-law and grandsons, although the bowlers amongst us thought it could have been a bit longer! The woods were perfect for the bigger boys to get lost in, the adults to nature watch (and complain about insects!) and the pool was ideal for EVERYONE! The kitchen was big enough for the cooks not to fall over each other - we had at least one professional in our party - and while the barbecue was slightly idiosyncratic, supper happened outside on all fourteen nights. The bonus for the adult contingent was having farming under our noses - we had at least four farmers at any one time, some of whom were quite keen to give the Frenchmen the benefit of their expertise- luckily their French was not up to it! The sun shone every day and we had a typically splendid thunderstorm. The Aigle factory shop ten minutes away was stripped bare - the cars all groaned with cheap boots and coats on the way home! All in all, a really memorable 70th birthday celebration - roll on the next one!

Owner's Response: I am so pleased that you had a great time at the chateau and that all the facilities were used. With so many of us living in cities these days it is great to have the benefits of the pool, the woods, and the games field literally on the doorstep, with both great views and privacy to boot. I am sorry if the cricket net was a bit short: a tree landed on the end piece of it and boke it so we had to take it down. We had it shipped from the UK (and set up by rural Frenchmen to whom I could not, with my French explain successfully what it was for!) and so buying an extension would, I think be quite hard wthout replacing the whole. But I am glad that you had a good time, we always want people to enjoy their holidays at the chateau. P.S. we too raid the Aigle factory shop on an annual basis!

Very pretty Chateau.

  • 5 of 5

Very peaceful with stunning views. Chateau well equipped with more than expected games, toys and equipment for children. All of the rooms very pretty and with loads of French style, scale and views. Well located for visits to local Chateaus and towns. Clean, beautifully restored and good value for money.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad that you had a good time and liked the chateau. We tried hard to create a playroom with extra toys this summer, added swings and a slide to the cricket and football nets on the games fieldas well as the new TV's with full English freeview channels and new comfy sofas, but without compromising all the original fittings and furnishings we have in the chateau. And thank you so much for leaving the chateau in such lovely condition. We would love to welcome you back if you want to explore the region further, or just chill by the pool, and offer a 10% discount for repeat guests. Again, many thanks, best, Jo.

Looking forward to our 3 weeks in 2016

  • 5 of 5

Having searched for a place to take our family (6 adults, 4 children) my husband and I stayed for a week at La Taupanne. We were not disappointed and cannot wait to take everyone there! The chateau is perfection and so well equipped. The bedrooms are gorgeous and everyone will have their own space but no littlies will feel isolated. The grounds are marvellous with plenty of running around and playing games areas. The pool is, without doubt, one of the best rental pools in France. We did not stray much from the chateau but shopping was easy and the little bar tabac in Ingrandes provided a close (walkable) place for a cafe au lait. The view over the valley is very peaceful. We would highly recommend La Taupanne to anyone looking for a perfect venue for a family holiday. Thank you Jo and Denise.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the feedback and your repeat booking for 2016! When you come back you will find more toys in a dedicated playroom and a great swing and slide combo for the children on the games field alongside the trampoline, cricket net and football goals. Also new sofas, and a large television with English freeview channels if you can drag yourself away from the pool (though why would you!) and new furniture on the terrace to drink in that view from. Enjoy! All the best, Jo.

A week of total relaxation

  • 5 of 5

The Chateau met all our expectations and more. Three generations (six adults and three children) took full advantage of everything that La Taupanne had to offer. The heated pool was a real bonus and the huge grounds offered lots of scope for using the many outdoor games provided. The well equipped kitchen meant that the chefs amongst us could really show of our culinary skills. The whole Chateau was beautifully clean and the beds were very comfortable. Thank you Joanne for letting us stay in your wonderful home.

Location

Activity and Interests

Travel:

Two local airports are served by low-cost airline 'Ryanair' making Chateau de la Taupanne easily accessible:

- Poitiers airport - 35 minutes

- Tours airport 1 hr

For guests who prefer to take the cross channel ferry the Chateau is within driving distance:

- Caen, approximately 3.5 hours drive

- Calais, approximately 5 hours drive

Distances:

The best way to explore this wonderful part of France is by car and we recommend that you bring or hire one.

- Ingrandes (for fresh bread) is 1.5k, a 20 minute walk through the fields or 4 min drive

- Chatellerault (for the market on Thursdays and Saturdays, restaurants, shops, banks) is 6km, an 8-10 minute drive

Further Details:

The Loire Valley is known for its wine, castles and gastronomy, there are also kids attractions

WINE

We recommend 'The New France' wine guide to visit local and regional wine makers. Wine tasting can be enjoyed at Chinon, around 45 minutes drive, including great tasting great value wines from Charles Joguet or Bernard Baudry in Cravant-les-Coteaux. Further afield 2-3 vineyards in Sancerre or Pouilly-fume can be reached in a full day trip along beautiful scenic routes.

CHATEAUX

The ruined Castle at Chinon is picturesque and there are some typical brasseries in the market square of this quaint town. But the 'heavy hitting' Loire Chateaux are also within easy reach, Azay le Rideau is well worth a visit for its fabulous gardens, and Chambord and Chenonceau are a must: Blois and Amboise are also popular.

GASTRONOMY

All gourmands will follow their noses - or their michelin guide - to great places to eat across the region. In Chatellerault, our local market town we would recommend 'La Gourmandine' offering indoor and outdoor fine dining in a grand 'belle époque' townhouse. Fixed price menus range from €25-€72 or you can eat a la carte, and an extensive wine list is available. We also like 'La Ferme St Jacques', a great rotisserie that serves 'farm fresh' meat and vegetables and great puddings in a rustic building. Finally there are plenty of cafes on the main square and market square to enjoy lunch or a coffee at when you go to explore the market on Thursday or Saturday.

KIDS

You may want a kids day out. Futuroscope, one of the largest theme parks in France is less than 30 minutes away. It is indescribable - sort of Octonauts meets 2001 Space Odyssey with a dose of the Science & Natural History Museum thrown in: do check the website! Puy du fou, around 1hr 45 minutes away is a Disney-esque swashbuckling ride through French history from vikings to chateaux via the three musketeers with heaps of restaurants and awesome evening 'spectacle' shows, worth the drive.
