Outstanding South Kensington location, just a few drawbacks

  • 4 of 5

Pros:

1. Outstanding location -- near the South Kensington Tube station, restaurants, Victoria and Albert museum, etc. There are two small grocery stores within a 3 minute walk.

2. The owner was very accommodating with requests, and very helpful.

3. It's great having a washer and dryer in the unit.

4. There is a very handy book of guidelines for the unit, but more importantly, instructions on how to use the dishwasher, washer and dryer.

5. Cable TV with Netflix on Channel 204 -- you can log in and watch most of your favorites (there may be some difference in availability in that not everything offered in the US is offered in the UK). (Just don't forget to log out when you leave...)

6. The master bedroom was very quiet and had the bed was quite comfortable.

7. The kitchen is very serviceable, with a full collection of plates, glasses, pots and pans, and a dishwasher. It is a tad small.

Cons:

1. The biggest issue for us was the street noise -- the street is very, very busy, and you get a great deal of noise in both the living room and the smaller bedroom (the one with two twin beds). It was distracting to try to relax or watch TV in the living room due to the noise. The windows really need to be replaced -- dual pane windows would make a major difference to the livability of this flat.

2. The WiFi is a little wonky -- you'll often lose Internet connection for no reason. When we first got there, we couldn't connect at all. A reboot of the router fixed that, but we'd often have to reboot a couple times a day just to maintain Internet connectivity.

3. The living room couch cushions really need to be replaced. When you sit down they flatten to about 2" in height.

4. This is a very minor thing, but just for the American guests, the shower doesn't have a full door or curtain. It's a kind of folding glass door that covers less than 50% of the length of the tub. Bottom line, you'll generally end up with a fair amount of water on the floor.

Owner's Response: We were amused by your review and would like to comment on a few of your criticisms. The WiFi we apologise for and wish you had told us. Obviously its quality is out of our control and if we dont know there is something wrong, we cant do anything about it. It only took a call to Virgin and checking all the wire connections were in correctly and it is now working to its usual high quality. Noise and Windows: If you rent a flat in the heart of vibrant London expect noise or go to the suburbs and spend most of the day travelling. To replace the windows with double glazing would mean replacing the frames, Planning from the council with Architect fees, scaffolding front and back. Rough price £200.000.00. This would probably put the flat out of your renting budget and many other people who love to be in the heart of London in one of the best areas. The kitchen is large by London standards for a small flat. and has two windows many don't have windows. The sofa cushions. We in England do not like foam and synthetic cushions they are considered down market. The cushions are feather and we all plump up our sofas everyday after sitting on them. Yes, we probably are quirky but like to keep up standards, and that's why you Americans like visiting. I am sorry you found so much at fault. In three years of renting I have never had comments like this. Perhaps you should look at it that you stayed in a two bedroom flat, albeit just two of you, in the best area of London for an incredibly cheap price. (4 Persons for less than £50.00 a night.) let me know if you find something cheaper and better.

Fantastic spot

  • 5 of 5

This is a great location. We really enjoyed the restaurants within walking distance and our easy access to the underground system nearby. Everything was exactly as it was described with no unpleasant surprises.

Location Location

  • 4 of 5

We loved the location, so handy to everything and easy to get to from Heathrow or the Eurostar on the train. Buses to most places if you didn't want to take the train. Lots of great cafes nearby. The apartment is on the 3rd floor so be prepared for the walk up, that said we were only up and down once a day as we were out doing stuff. Once in the apartment it was roomy, well equipped and comfortable. The beds were great as well. The bathroom is small but functional, probably only 1 person at a time getting ready in it but that is not unusual in apartments in London. The only downside, and given we live in a very quiet area - it probably wouldn't be noticed by other people, was it would be better with double glazing or if that is not allowed the panel insert thing that can be put in the frame to make it a bit quieter for a sleep-in. All in all would stay here again.

Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at this apartment (week before Easter) for 5 nights. The apartment is perfectly located, about a 5 minute walk from the South Kensington Tube Station (and there's a great ice cream place right across the street from the tube station!). There's also a bike stand right outside which made it easy to go for a bike round to the park one evening. A grocery store is located right next door and is open early and late, making it perfect for us. The beds were comfortable. We have two teenagers and they slept well in the two twins. Thanks for a great stay! As others have shared, that last flight of stairs is an adventure, but all of the other perks (especially location), made this a perfect flat as a launch pad for our adventures.

Real gem

  • 4 of 5

A well appointed compact apartment in South Kensington that is an ideal location to explore London. It is a pleasant five to ten minute walk to the tube and the South Kensington Station can get you to most parts of London in no time. The museums and the Kensington Gardens are within easy walking distance as are the busy Gloucester Road with its shops and restaurants and the Fulham Road Cinema. A perfect place for a family of four that includes teenagers. It is not really a place for younger children and the three flights of stairs might be a struggle for some. For us it was a welcome chance to burn of some calories and a much more affordable alternative to the many posh hotels in this part of London.
