Updated: 15-Sep-2016
House in Alhama De Granada, Andalucia, Spain - In The Arabic Quarter, Right On The Square Of The Main Church

A lovely old traditional Andalucian house in the Arabic quarter of the ancient spa town of Alhama de Granada. The house has 3 good sized double bedrooms all with balconies. Two bathrooms. There is a modern kitchen and living room. The good sized roof terrace has spectacular views over the town and countryside beyond you can see the flat topped Parapanda mountain in the distance. The jacuzzi hot tub is the ideal place to unwind any time of the year after a hard days relaxing, walking, cycling or sightseeing. We have lovingly renovated this old family house using local craftsmen and sympathetic traditional materials, there are a lot of original features.

About the Owner

My wife and I have recently retired, we have 3 kids, one just finished at Uni in Manchester and working in London, one working in Leeds and one in 6th Form college in Leeds. Since retirement we spend a lot more time in this part of Andalucia, our Spanish is improving (slowly) and we are certainly getting to know the area even better. It is a delight to be here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Lovely, spacious, and homely house in a fantastic location - Alhama is a pretty and traditional town, tranquil and not over-touristed whilst having a strong community feel and plenty of very friendly bars and restaurants (we particularly recommend the family-run Siguriya restaurant which seems to be very well-known locally, and for good reason - both food and friendliness of the proprietors). The surrounding countryside is glorious, and it's and easy and scenic drive to coast, cities, lakes. Stephen extended great hospitality and advice through advance emails, plentiful provision of local area guides etc in the house, a 'welcome' supply of bread/wine/tea/coffee and other store cupboard essentials to get us started, and well-organised (and very friendly) local meet-and-greet arrangements. The jacuzzi was fab too - a relaxing highlight at the end of every day, and plenty big enough for our party of five to bask in simultaneously. All very highly recommended - we will definitely be returning at some point!" Jane, London, UK

"The house was lovely and the village so friendly. The house is very charming, tastefully decorated - great bathrooms/hot water etc . I can imagine it would be a great position during fiesta time! Thank-you for the very generous welcome pack. Enjoyed the local 'setas' as suggested - delicious! very reasonably priced food shopping in the old way which I love. Adored the surrounding countryside - just beautiful." Penny, London, UK

"Stephen was extremely helpful in the days leading up to our trip and was very quick to respond to all questions we had. The house is simply beautiful and is smack in the heart of this fantastic little town. We were able to walk to 90% of what we wanted to see (through the gorge, the market, the hot springs, etc). I would recommend this house to everyone an we know where we will be staying if we get the chance to make it back!" Thaddeus, USA

"We were met at 11pm to be shown where to park and to be let into the house. The house has lots of character and is in a fantastic location right in the Plaza de presos opposite the old prison and main church. Very central and a quick walk to all the good bars, main square etc. Alhama is a beautiful town to spend time in and we all loved staying in the house ( including the kids). The hot tub was a favourite." Ione, UK

"We had an excellent stay at Stephen's home in Alhama. Sami (Stephen's friend) checked us in and made us feel right at home with a wonderful welcome package and a special treat for us since we were visiting on our honeymoon. How sweet! Sami was very knowledgeable about the area and was very helpful and patient with our many questions. The location is perfect as you are just a few steps from everything you need in the plaza, yet the countryside views from the rooftop terrace are incredible. Definitely recommended!" Katie, USA

From the Owner

We love this part of Spain, we try to visit as often as possible. We feel it is an authentic Spanish town - incredible light, fabulous food, great people and hardly any English spoken. It is not far from the airport at Malaga, but it is a million miles from the pubs and full English breakfasts on the coast. Also the prices are a lot more reasonable than the coast, you are simply charged the same as the locals.

Special interest holidays:

Alhama de Granada is a classic, beautiful rural Andalucian spa town with a spectacular gorge and fantastic countryside all around. Lake Bermajales is nearby (12km) where there is a choice of water sports including swimming, windsurfing, kayaking, sail boating, pedalos and fishing. Close by there is also horse riding, hiking, quad biking, go carting, mountain biking and cycling. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, serious hiking and bird watching. A short walk up the gorge there is Ventoro spa with many treatments including massage & hydrotherapy. The wonderful city of Granada with the Albaicin and world famous Alhambra Palace is 40 mins drive away or 1 hour by local bus. Public swimming pools, there is an open air pool in town with grassy areas and a bar and one at Pato Loco a 25 min walk up the gorge. At the bottom of town the balneario spa dates from Roman times, the thermal waters are 47 degrees C. There are also photography, cookery, creative writing courses in town.

There are a number of sandy beaches on Bermajales lake 15 minutes drive away. Torre del Mar is a 45 minutes drive. Nerja is 1 hour 15 mins drive, there are a number of beaches and of course the world famous caves. El Palo beach 1 hour 20 mins drive nice sandy beach with beach front restaurants and bars.

Malaga airport is 1 hour and 20 minutes drive. Granada airport is 40 minutes drive. Car hire is recommended, but not essential. Once in Alhama everything you need is in walking distance; food stores, cafe/ bars, restaurants, banks and public swimming baths. It is also possible to arrive by train - the new high speed AVE links Malaga to Madrid and in turn the rest of Europe. There is a bus service to the city of Granada, which runs 3/4 times a day and takes 1 hr. Airport pick up can be arranged.

Further Details:

There are 4 fresh fish shops in the town, 3 butchers, 4 fresh fruit and vegetable shops, 6small supermarkets, banks, hardware stores, a market on Fridays selling a big variety of flowers, vegetables and clothes etc. There are around 36 cafe bars in the town, pretty much all serve food, hot and cold drinks, Some of our personal favourites include: Ochoa: classic Spanish rural bar, serving great rustic plates of food, local wine and draft beer. Run by Josephina and Paco. This place has very friendly service and in the colder months they place trays of hot olive wood coals (Braseros) under your table to keep you warm. Le Seguriya: sit down restaurant, run by Paco and Lola. Great food and relaxed atmosphere. There is a fantastic terrace overlooking the gorge. Meson Diego: Great for 'menu del dia' served every weekday lunchtime - around 8 euros for 3 courses and a drink. The terrace is a suntrap, which is great for most of the year, but it can be a bit hot in summer, there is an air-conditioned restaurant inside. Bar Andaluz: Also do a great 'menu del dia' served every weekday lunchtime - around 8 euros for 3 courses. Again catches the Sun. Bar Gallego: modern bar, serving great and interesting tapas. El Tigre: Is run by the effervescent Antonia, it is the small traditional bar by the top corner of Constitution, fabulous tapas, stand inside if you can. In the summer season, they have control of a big space at the top of the square. La Crème: This is an ice cream and coffee shop. Also one of the best places in town to get a fresh loaf of bread. Another favourite is a restaurant with great pizza called 'Al Dente' sandwiched between Bar Andaluz and Meson Diego on the main square, it has a small front but lots of room inside. There are two thermal spas on the edge of town offering spas, massages and a full list of other treatments with which to pamper yourself.

From the Owner

When we stay at the house, even if it is for a long weekend we feel immediately relaxed. It is a very healthy place to be, the food is great, people are friendly and the temperature is perfect whatever time of the year we visit. We wanted to be in a small town, so that everything is in walking distance, shops, cafe bars, the gorge, the spa ... it takes a little over an hour to get from Malaga, we park the car and it mostly stays there for the entire duration of the trip. The level of stress reduction is amazing when you can leave the car and walk everywhere.
