About the Owner
About Lisa Rowett-Smith
We live in England in The North Yorkshire Moors, with our 2 dogs Bailey & Teodora, 2 cats Cia & Lyon and 2 donkeys Willow & Bracken. We moved to the countryside in 2012 and renovated our 1760's agricultural stone barn into 3 holiday cottages. We have since turned our utility barn into a games room for our guests and are now updating our own home (the guests had to come first).
We have also planted an orchard so fingers crossed in the future, our guests will be able to pick apples and try their hand on the press we intend to use for making cider. It has been an exhausting journey, full of surprises (mostly good but others not so) however we have managed to stay married to each other and wouldn't swap it for the world. A friend visited recently and said we had found a little piece of heaven and we think we have. We are hoping to get some chickens next and share our fresh eggs with the guests.
Lisa Rowett-Smith purchased this cottage in 2012
Why Lisa Rowett-Smith chose North Yorkshire
We fell in love with the area whilst visiting my parents who live nearby in Scarborough. We were keen to buy a property which allowed us to run a holiday cottage business but also gave us the opportunity to renovate a building ourselves and start the business from scratch.
We moved in July 2012 & started work on the barn, which has only housed cows and swallows since 1760.
It has been a very frustrating & exhausting year but we have managed to complete the renovations and opened for business in late Summer 2013. We love living here and are looking forward to sharing it with visiting guests.
Before and after photos of the project can be seen on our website.

Very nicely renovated property. Homely, warm, nicely decorated with original features.
Everything you need provided in a fabulous little cottage. Very friendly and helpful owners. The property is perfectly positioned to access Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and surrounding area and you can see the sea from the cottage windows! We would definitely go back.
Perfect in every way!
The holiday was just right from the point of booking, to our departure. The owners could not have done more to welcome us and arrange all we needed. We had some great days out and a lovely walk down to the sea from the cottage. We should have stayed longer!!!
Lovely cottage great views
Had a great holiday staying in cowslip, spotless, everything you needed .great location,a little piece of heaven.Hopefully will be back.
Great little getaway
The cottages are beautifully presented, spotless and have gorgeous views down to the sea. Everything you could need in a home from home is provided, down to tea towels and dishwasher tablets.
Just a short drive or walk down to Robins Hood Bay and a few more miles from Whitby they are in a great location. We loved popping up to the local pub The Flask in the evening and even won the pub quiz!
Great 3 nights away, we thoroughly enjoyed it!
Beautiful cottage. Will definitely be back.
We stayed in the 2 bedroom Cowslip cottage for a week just after Easter. The cottage was beautiful. Spotlessly clean and stylishly decorated. The views from the patio are fabulous with the sea in the distance and a field where the owners donkeys roam during the day. They have a large games room opposite to the cottages with an honesty bar, pool table, darts, chess and more which was great to pop over to for an hour after we had been out. We definitely felt like we were coming 'home' at the end of each day. The location is perfect, 10 minutes in car from Scarborough, 10 minutes in car from Whitby and nicely located for Pickering and Helmsley. There is no doubt that we will definitely be booking to stay there again.
Ideal location for exploring Robin Hood Bay
Excellent accommodation. This is a barn renovation which has been done to a very high standard. We (David, Lorraine and Ying Ling the Siamese cat) felt this was a home from home. The welcome and customer service from Graham and Lisa was exceptional. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives - provided their holiday dates don't clash with ours!
