A 1760's agricultural stone barn conversion into 3 charming cottages, retaining many original features. Furnished & decorated to a high standard, providing comfortable accommodation, which you will enjoy returning to after exploring this beautiful part of the country. Ideally located just off the A171 in the North Yorkshire Moors - great for country walks & visiting the villages & coast all year round. Wake up to wonderful sea & countryside views, enjoy breakfast on your patio in the summer months & our underfloor heating system provides cozy nights in during the winter. We have some fantastic dark skies, perfect for star gazing and an abundance of wildlife - the sun rising and setting is pretty amazing too. The scenery is stunning whatever the season & can be enjoyed by couples, families, walkers & cyclists. Groups can rent all three cottages, ideal for a large get together. Pets are welcome by prior arrangement in selected cottages - £10 charge per pet for Shortbreaks and £20 per pet per week . The changing seasons make Meadowbeck Cottages perfect for a stay all year round. Short Breaks Available - please see our website.
We have also converted our dutch pole barn into a games room, including Pool Table, Bar Football, Darts Board & TV area.
New for this year our Shepherds Hut which sleeps 2 and offers charming, cozy accommodation - fully equipped and a unique experience - please see our website for details.
We live in England in The North Yorkshire Moors, with our 2 dogs Bailey & Teodora, 2 cats Cia & Lyon and 2 donkeys Willow & Bracken. We moved to the countryside in 2012 and renovated our 1760's agricultural stone barn into 3 holiday cottages. We have since turned our utility barn into a games room for our guests and are now updating our own home (the guests had to come first).
We have also planted an orchard so fingers crossed in the future, our guests will be able to pick apples and try their hand on the press we intend to use for making cider. It has been an exhausting journey, full of surprises (mostly good but others not so) however we have managed to stay married to each other and wouldn't swap it for the world. A friend visited recently and said we had found a little piece of heaven and we think we have. We are hoping to get some chickens next and share our fresh eggs with the guests.
Lisa Rowett-Smith purchased this cottage in 2012
We fell in love with the area whilst visiting my parents who live nearby in Scarborough. We were keen to buy a property which allowed us to run a holiday cottage business but also gave us the opportunity to renovate a building ourselves and start the business from scratch.
We moved in July 2012 & started work on the barn, which has only housed cows and swallows since 1760.
It has been a very frustrating & exhausting year but we have managed to complete the renovations and opened for business in late Summer 2013. We love living here and are looking forward to sharing it with visiting guests.
Before and after photos of the project can be seen on our website.
Meadowbeck Holiday Cottages are in a great location. Stunning countryside and moorland views, as well as the beautiful coastline - what more is there?
Easy to access just off the main A171 Scarborough to Whitby road, yet in a quiet, peaceful area within the North Yorkshire Moors. There is plenty of free parking directly outside of the cottages for easy access.
The cottages have great countryside and sea views, a pub serving real ales and great food just a short walk away. There is an abundance of wildlife on our doorstep and the lack of light pollution gives us some amazing night skies - perfect for star gazing. Easy access by car or bus to a number of quaint villages and coastal towns.
As me and my missus sat on the sun baked patio of Swallows Rest sipping our wine and looking out over the fields to the distant Robins Hoods Bay she said to me "you've come up trumps with this one pet"....and indeed I had.
Firstly the location is both beautiful and practical....the three cottages are situated in a tranquil place with lovely views. There is plenty to see and do in the area with both Whitby and Scarborough being short drives away...and if you want to leave the car there is a very regular bus service.
Secondly the cottage itself is immaculate. It is tastefully decorated and is spacious. Fixtures and fittings are new and the luxury of underfloor heating is a bonus. Upon arrival we were impressed at it being spotlessly clean and that there was some Yorkshire cake and sticks of rock waiting for us.
Lisa and Graham were very helpful with Lisa even taking our kids on her dog walk...thanks Lisa!
I have stayed in numerous hired accommodation over the years and I have to rank this place as up there with the best....try it out!
Our stay in swallows rest was fantastic and we could not have asked for anything better. The surroundings are delightful and our daughter enjoyed fussing over the dogs, donkeys, cats and other animals that belonged to the owners.
The cottage was clean, tidy, tastefully and modernly decorated and had everything we needed for our stay.
The cottage is situated in an excellent place and towns such as Whitby and Scarborough are easily accessible by car but far enough away to enjoy the scenery and peace and quiet.
The owners are fantastic and are welcoming and knowledgable about the surrounding areas and places that are good to visit.
We all had an amazing time and really didn't want to leave. Hopefully we will return again soon.
We stayed in a beautiful and charming cottage which had all the aminities we required. My little girl loved seeing the donkeys on the farm each day! The owners Lisa and Graham were so welcoming and accommodating, such lovely people. The only negative comment to mention which I feel is out of the owners control anyway is there were such a lot of flies to contend with! Which meant we kept all the windows and doors shut. The cottage got very warm as a consequence.
I would highly recommend staying here and would love to take the rest of our family one day to stay in all 3 cottages. We also loved that one of the cottages is pet free, that was important to us having a young child.
The decoration of the cottages was just gorgeous!
The information we received from the owners about things to do in the area meant we had some really lovely family days out.
Thank you for a lovely stay.
We had a great weekend at Swallow's Rest. The cottage was full of character and had everything we needed. Rooms were clean and spacious and we would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a peaceful relaxing stay.
What a lovely little cottage. Both lisa and graham made us feel at home immediately on arrival. Spotlessly clean, exceptionally cosy, fabulous view. Very central to all attractions. We will be back, cant wait for our next visit already recommended to our friends. 5 stars from us Lisa and Graham
Spent a wonderful and very relaxing four days in Swallows Rest cottage, which we found to have been restored to a very high standard. It was well appointed and tastefully furnished.
The cottages are down a little track off the road than runs into Scarborough one way and Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay the other, so are well placed for days out.
Just across this road is the Flask pub which does good food by all accounts, but we didn't get to try this ourselves. Next to that is a small filling station which has a shop attached, handy for forgotten items.
Despite being a short distance from the road, we were never aware of any traffic noise at all. In fact the only thing we did hear were the birds !
The views from the rear windows and the patio of the cottage were amazing, birds on the feeders, Bracken and Willow the donkeys and of course the sea which even after a little rain looked lovely with a rainbow which appeared to rise from the sea and lasted a very long time.
We tended to sleep with the blind partly open as we found that with no light around the sky was so dark we could see a vast amount of stars, and it was lovely to lie in bed and fall asleep just watching them.
We found Lisa and Grahem to be very friendly and chatty, they should be very proud of what they have achieved. They also have two gorgeous dogs and two cats that add to the charm of the place.
We had lunch at the Magpie cafe in Whitby, which we really enjoyed. The batter on the fish was so light and tasty, not the cheapest of meals at around £30 for two of us, but well worth it.
We certainly hope to visit these cottages again.
