Azalea Cottage is a substantial stone built detached property with slate roof. Originally part of the 400 year old residence Craghead it originally provided servant accommodation and storage. In 2008 we completely renovated the property bringing the old substantial structure up to today's standards of comfort and safety. The clever use of the different floor levels provides a lounge with green slate floor on the ground floor with access to the garden and courtyard. This cosy space has an abundance of natural light. 2 steps leads to a rear door with access directly to the fells. A further 3 original honed slate steps leads to the fully fitted kitchen with views of the garden and seasonal views of Lake Windermere. The well equipped kitchen has slate floor and dining table. 6 further honed slate steps leads to the bedroom with lots of natural light and a fully tiled en suite bathroom with powerful shower, WC and wash hand basin.

I'll get the weather out the way first. It was awful! There was compensation though.....The Azalea Cottage. Beautiful, clean, warm with everything you'd need to stay in when its wet. TV, DVD player, freeview and broadband included, well equipped kitchen with TV, comfortable en suite bedroom with TV, if there was another room there'd be TV in it! The cottage is very quiet despite being just off the main road. This is ideal for couples and although small, I understand it is a converted stables, I could have quite happily stayed forever. The only thing I would say to anyone staying in future is, watch the driveway. Very tight and difficult to manoeuvre. All in all I'd thoroughly recommend this cottage for comfort and as an ideal central base for the Lakes. 6 stars from me!

Activity and Interests


Easy access to Lake District from the north and the south from M6. Access from east via A66.

Good public transport within Lake District with particular emphasis on the Langdale service with services to Coniston, Hawkshead 'passing the door' and stopping nearby. Regular bus services to Kendal, Windermere and Lancaster to the south with services to Keswick to the north passing through Ambleside.


Ambleside centre is 1 mile. Elterwater in Langdale is 3 miles. Grasmere is 5 miles. Windermere is 5 miles. Kendal is 11 miles. The Drunken Duck Inn at Barnsgate is 2 miles.

Train to all main west coast destinations from Oxenholme. Trains also to and from Kendal.

Numerour local taxi firms.

Further Details:

The local dairyman delivers to Azalea and other properties in Clappersgate each day. He will leave milk and many other items on demand. Whilst a delivery may be made on your first morning a note advising him that you do not require his service will suffice.

Ambleside is a bustling village with every type of shop to meet virtually all needs. Large and small, local and national shops. Sell everything hardware stores (Martins). Local butchers (Freddy Garside) renowned for their game and sausage rolls. (arrive early before the sell out). Larger supermarket (Booths) in Windermere where you will also find the Lakeland store.Pubs, restaurants abound. Hayes Garden Centre is very popular. This is known as a village but has more facilities than most towns.

This property can also be found at Owners Direct ref E10628. At that ref you will find Todd Crag which is also a One Bedroom property. Todd Crag is very different having more original features, being on one level and much larger. It is very comfortable.

  • Notes on accommodation: Azalea is a typical 2 storey cottage. ETB 4 Star property. Access directly from the drive with private parking. Access with safe key code. Visitors are provided with a code for a key safe in advance of their arrival. No need to travel for or return keys to a remote office. Pet friendly property with garden and secure courtyard. Close to excellent dog walking paths to the fells. Easy walking to Ambleside with bus stopping close to property. Close to River Brathay and local active church and parish centre. Kingfishers are a common sight along the river which is popular with boaters The mature garden is a haven for birdlife. It is frequented by numerous species including woodpeckers, jays, many types of tit, robins, siskins and many more! Often you will see and hear buzzards soaring above. The owners provide and stock feeders to encourage the birds. Bird food provided which visitors are encouraged to use. Occasionally deer will make an appearance! Outside: Azalea Cottage is located behind Todd Crag House (in the same ownership and listed with Owners Direct). As the properties are built into a sloping garden the drive from the road is fairly steep. Dedicated parking for the cottage is behind a substantial laurel hedge separating the property from the house garden. In this gravelled area we provide seating and table. Full sun throughout the day. Views of Wansfell to the east. Also, we provide further seating and a small table on a paved patio adjacent to the main access door. This area is lit in the evening with subdued lighting and full lighting prompted by PIR detectors. Sunny spot in the afternoon and evenings. Mature garden with climbing roses and the ancient azalea bush from whence the cottage is named. On the south side, with access from the lounge there is a completely private and secluded courtyard with patio furniture. The surface is paved with the 400 year slate flooring recovered during the restoration Todd Crag House. Utility Room: Large store off courtyard for cleaning appliances, tumble drier and visitor storage. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and bed linen provided. For lettings of more than one week we provide a complete change on each seventh day. The property is cleaned for your arrival and all beds are made up.
