Overview

About the property

A charming riverside cottage with canoe and small pool for exclusive use of couples, near Sommieres in the Gard region of the Languedoc

Please note that the only way that we can accommodate our guests is to have all bookings starting and finishing on a Saturday.

Everything that we, still the relatively new owners, have sought to do since our ownership is to create the ideal retreat for 2 people: We purchased the house in March 2014.

Since then we have returned each year for 2 periods of nine weeks to holiday and to update various aspects of the cottage in order to provide, hopefully, a sanctuary affording total comfort and tranquility for our future guests.

We are not at or near the cottage during your holiday, we are sure that you will be pleased to know that!

So being ready for you has to be our priority by what we do during our stays as well as having Luciana nearby for any immediate needs.

OUTSIDE: The Mediterranean styled garden is on three levels and so we have tried to make sure that there are opportunities to relax on each. We have sought to provide plenty of comfy padded recliners and seats on the 3 levels of the riverside garden. We have also provided a plancha on the upper level of the garden for all alfresco dining.

The pool was considered by us to be an important provision for guests and so decided to build a completely new stone platform and install a brand new pool during our April/May stay in 2017..

Most importantly for us is the fact that we have our own private access to the river and canoe, which we purchased from a local kayaking company, KAYAK VERT, together with the necessary life jackets for the safety of our guests.

. The metal seat, by the steps to the river, allows views down river whilst the recliners afford you extended periods to relax in the sun with views upriver.

The huge cypress trees on the upper level ensure that there is always shade in which to sit on even the hottest of days.

We believed, from the outset, that all guests would be spending much of their time round by the pool and cooking alfresco on the plancha on the upper level of the garden....and that has proved to be the case!

Our first guests bought a lilo on which to relax in the pool...it is still there as we update this description.... Indeed a second lilo appeared this year ( August 2017)!

SUBSEQUENT UPDATES OUTSIDE:

We are determined to improve each year!

We have bought 2 OKA New England chairs for the terrace area.

The terrace area was re-tiled in September 2016.

We have a large outdoor dining table with four GARDEN TRADING seats. .for the main outside dining table.

The three tiered garden now has an automatic sprinkling system to give the plants a chance. We look forward to adding to the garden, each year that we are there, during periods when our guests have returned home. Indeed the sprinkling system is due to be overseen again in April /May 2018.

The water sprinkling system on the front garden comes on during the night so as not to disturb your daily activities!

We have taken out some overgrown plants on the riverside that had become a barrier to our views of the river. New plants will now have their turn!

The fig tree and cherry tree planted in May 2016 remain under review whilst the wisteria planted at the same time is now flourishing. It is gradually spreading along the two selected walls....very pretty!

We have restored all external lights and added a reading light over the terrace area.

New for 2018 Season:

Having installed a new pool we have bought a robot cleaner for the new pool to ensure that it is cleaned each day during your holiday without disturbing you.

We have installed a new laser pool alarm system to ensure maximum security. It is compulsory to have an alarm system if the pool is not fenced in.

We acknowledged that such recent technological innovations as the robot and the infra red alarm needed greater expertise than we have so we have also employed a new, professional pool maintenance man who will come in on the day of your arrival well in advance of your reaching the cottage. He will make sure that the pool is clean and ready for your immediate use!. He will set up the robot which is then self sufficient for 7 days.

We do hope that everybody will be able to take advantage of the cool that the canoe on the river and the new pool offers during those hot days.

INSIDE UPDATES SINCE BUYING IN 2014.

Inside the house we have, again, done everything we could to provide comfort and warmth within an enviable environment. In 2014 we stressed immediately and reiterate now that we are inviting guests to come to our home in France (without us, you will be pleased to know).

We were determined not to set up a rental home....this is our home in France and is furnished as such. We hoped that all of our guests would share our taste and priorities of provision.

INTERNAL UPDATES SINCE PURCHASE

The first major project was to upgrade the bathroom as shown on photographs.

We also felt a need to upgrade all of the electrics in the cottage.

EDF upgraded electrical supply and distribution board. Silence in the meter cupboard and no more inexplicable power cuts! FANTASTIC!!

Since then there has been a total reconfiguration of the kitchen: New floor, new wall finishes, re-wiring, re-plumbing including a new instant hot water cylinder, new stone worktop and supports.

The kitchen was then totally re-decorated.

We have not sought to provide an English fitted kitchen in France but rather keep elements of style of the French kitchen we inherited. Rather than go for fitted units we purchased banks of French antique sets of drawers and installed them instead.

BUT We have subsequently put in a new Miele dishwasher.

We hope that our 2018 guests will like the new kitchen as much as we do. We are grateful for the positive feedback on the bathroom and kitchen that our 2015 -2017 guests have provided!

IN THE LOUNGE

We have sought to provide an eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture ( see photos)

eg In our antique corner cupboard sits the Router, and everything for the TV. The TV is set up to receive UK programmes. We recently bought a Humax Recorder to put in the television cupboard. This allows guests to record favourite UK programmes so they do not have to stay up late to watch them!

I spent part of my holiday assembling a new wooden frontage to the outside store where all tools are kept.

MOST RECENT UPGRADE READY FOR 2018 GUESTS

Total redecoration of the guest bedroom.

Since 2014 we have learned that almost none of our guests had taken advantage of the TV in the bedroom. It took up a lot of room for non-use so we have removed it.

Instead we have added to the range of furniture within the room.

provided an antique wardrobe,

put in extra lighting

totally re-decorated the room.

We hope our return guests and all new guests will like what we have done!

We have now had our first 4 years of welcome guests, the fifth set are booking their 2018 holidays right now. We should like to thank each and everyone of our past guests for their encouraging words NOT JUST THOSE WHO HAVE WRITTEN LOVELY REVIEWS FOR THE WEB-PAGE, but also all the guests who have left equally appreciated feedback in the VISITORS BOOK and sent texts directly to us. The 2017 Visitor book comments are now on these pages and we are very grateful for them.

We should like to thank all guests for the care that they have taken of the property throughout their stays. It was encouraging that so many appreciated the input from Luciana, the housekeeper. We have passed on that appreciation during each of our holidays at the cottage.

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL PAST GUESTS WE HOPE TO WELCOME YOU BACK AT SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE.

About MARY and GRAHAM

We had spent all our married lives trying to find holiday properties that provide all that we need as a holidaying couple.

We have been to lovely villas, cottages & apartments but so many were keen to sleep up to 5+... more than we needed!

Having discovered the wonders of France, we sought a LIFESTYLE CHANGE of our own. We are lucky enough to be the owners of a beautiful home on the river and to be in a position to offer it for the exclusive use of other couples for whom 'especially for two' will resonate.

We love nothing better than sitting by the river watching nature, dining or reading in an idyllic environment!

Taking the canoe on the river, enjoying coffees and snacks in charming French villages, walks in the countryside or along sandy beaches are all part of ' THE DREAM WE WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU!'

MARY and GRAHAM purchased this cottage in 2014

Why MARY and GRAHAM chose Aubais

We first holidayed in France in 2003. The 5 years between 2008 -2013 were on different riversides in the South. The unbelievable peace and tranquility of these riverside holidays persuaded us that we should seek to find our own holiday home within such an environment.

The fact that it took us 5 years to find this corner of paradise shows how rarely they turn up.

The river was our priority, indeed all 'outside demands' were to be most important because 80%+ of our life in France was to be outside, away from crowds. The photographs say more than we can about our new home! We are pleased that, this year, we are allowed to show you more than the 20 permitted in previous years

Another reason we chose this cottage is that the interior was

unlike anything else we had seen. We have sought to preserve and develop all that it was. The eclectic mix of antique and new, comfort-concentrated furniture is, we believe, what makes it special.

The climate is ideal and the two large trees on the upper level afford shelter from the fiercest sun. When staying around the cottage we tend to spend the greater part of the day on the upper level. When the upper level is in shade later in the afternoon we go down to the lower level to read. Going on the river in the early evening is magical and then there are wonderful walks from the cottage before dinner!!

What makes this cottage unique

ESPECIALLY FOR TWO!.. is the focus for us as we invite guests to holiday in our French home. We cannot boast of the majestic size of the property but rather we are able to offer assurances that the 130 sq.m. of interior living space has been generously apportioned especially for two people.

It is lovely to live by the river, with our own small private pool, in the peace and quiet of the countryside and to walk in the hills from home. However, it is equally important to us that we can drive to the numerous thriving markets in the area, sit and ' people watch ' in the coffee shops within villages and towns known throughout the world and enjoy all the beaches a short drive away. We are so lucky to have all these options available to us! We are delighted that all guests so far have shared our enthusiasm for the cottage and its environs.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Finally we should like to thank the last of our guests who wrote in the Visitors Book.

5th August: My sister and I wanted a quiet week away where doing nothing would be completely acceptable. But we ended up visiting a new town every day and still had lots of down time in the cottage. Even though its so seclkuded it's still so close to so many places- really ticks all of the boxes.

The perfect little getaway!

18th August: Totally and utterly perfect.

A blissful setting a beautiful house and we have simply spent our two weeks enjoying both.

Truly splendid.

The pace and business of normal day to day life has meant that we have enjoyed making only two decisions each day....which place to sit and whether to drink red or white!

We cannot wait to return and thank you Mary, Graham and Luciana for honestly the best holiday we have ever had. Ian and Nicola.

26th August: We had a lovely stay for 1 week in this part of France. It is very peaceful and relaxing. We visited a few places and went to the beach in Sete which is very nice. We also visited Montpellier which is well worth a visit, ( Take some good walking footwear if you go)

We had great weather and the plunge pool was handy for cooling down. Also had a little paddle down the river in the canoe.

Best of all the cottage is in a perfect location by the river, just to sit and chill all day. Thank you Mary and Graham for a perfect getaway. Would love to return some day. Colin and Clare

9th September: We have again had a wonderful, relaxing time. The weather has been perfect - unlike most of the rest of France!

Visited Nimes this time which was well worth it. One of our highlights was watching the river at night and seeing the fish create phosphorescence as they broke the surface in the moonlight. Magical!

We have no doubt you will be so glad to have your home back again. Enjoy. Thank you. Alf and Janice.

Mary and I moved back into our house on the day Alf and Janice left.

Thanks to them, Luciana and all of our other guests our home was exactly as we had left it. We enjoyed upgrading the guest bedroom during our stay ready for our 2018 guests.

We hope all future guests will be as happy!

There are double marbled inserted hand basins with tiled splash backs. We have installed new taps for these hand basins during October 2017. The hand made mirror over the hand basins was initiated when we fell in love with an antique cartouche found at a local brocante. Photos make clearer than any words here! So we have removed the shuttered doors that led to the hanging space for clothes. We have also taken out the wall mounted TV and DVD from this room. The latter took up a lot of space and has been rarely used. The TV, DVD and Humax in the sitting room has been considered more than enough by previous guests! Many of our summer guests have not watched tv at all!! There is an antique chest of drawers with fine gilt mirror over. 1.24 m exit to garden & car park. 2 free standing fans are left in the bedroom

Notes:
Our predecessors had created a real gem of a property from this former fisherman's cottage. We have sought to be equally discriminating with the quality and comfort of furnishings and fixtures. We could not possibly have come up with a better option for the huge bibliotheque in the lounge. We have enjoyed filling the shelves with our own artefacts and books for you to enjoy. We shall continue to 'update' whenever we can both outside and inside the cottage. The inside changes have already been summarised & photographed but: Outside: The three tiered Mediterranean style garden is what sold the cottage to us: A new, metal bench sits alongside the river, with 2 new recliners nearby. There is a canoe for use by guests on the river. On the upper levels our predecessors had cared enough about the grounds to give us an excellent operational garden immediately. We have had a new automatic watering system installed to try to give the plants a better chance! The 4 metre diameter pool is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the sun and the river view. A large outdoor dining table and chairs are excellent for those essential alfresco meals, morning noon and night. 2015: There are new dining chairs as well as 2 large seats on the patio. The plancha, bought in 2014, has proven very popular. 2016/17 We have bought 2 new recliners for the 2017 season to match the two bought in 2014. This affords comfy relaxation on the upper and lower levels of the 3 tiered garden. Outside lights mean that there is never a need to rush in. Scenic walks may be started from the house in many directions. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: There are more of everything than you will need for your stay: sheets, towels, cutlery, crockery etc. The cottage will have been cleaned by the housekeeper prior to your arrival. She will meet you, refresh the cottage after first week, be available to you if you need her for any emergency and then oversee your departure. Otherwise the cottage will be yours undisturbed! We hope you might wish to enjoy having a great, relaxing holiday here!

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed a lovely week at this riverside cottage. It was very relaxing watching the world go by and soaking up the sun. The plunge pool was handy to cool down and there was plenty of shade in the garden if you wanted it.

The cottage had all the amenities you could ask for and was close by to Montpellier which was worth a visit. Also there was Sete which was a beach resort an hours drive away from the cottage which was lovely.

Would love to return in the future. Many thanks Mary and Graham for such a wonderful place.

Best Holiday Ever!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely superb holiday in this simply perfect cottage. It was a beautiful setting in which to completely unwind, so much so we rarely left the property. Our biggest decisions each day were either to canoe or take a dip in the pool and to have red or white wine with our lunch. We cannot wait to return next year...best holiday ever!

Breathtaking!

  • 5 of 5

As we walked into this wonderful cottage after our flight from Gatwick and drive from Montpelier, music filled the air and Luciana welcomed us like friends. Within seconds we felt the burden of travel evaporate, within minutes we knew we had found somewhere very special, within hours we were making plans to return next year. It was a breathtaking start to our holiday.

Putting a finger on just what makes this place so magical isn't difficult. Firstly, Mary and Graham have spared no expense to make the cottage as comfortable as possible. From the furnishings to the facilities, everything has been considered, everything given a loving touch and it all seemed so familiar yet completely unique. The well equipped kitchen is surpassed, just, by the luxurious bathroom and there are TVs, stereos and most mod cons you could hope to find. You won't be spending much time indoors though.

This place is all about the great unwind. If you're getting away from life's stresses and strains, you couldn't want for more. The cottage practically insists that you do as little as possible and take life very, very easy while you're there.

And then there's the garden.

Almost every night we sat atop the tiered garden and watched the river flow before us. The great emerald artery that bore life up and down its course. Canoes and paddle boards drifted by from time to time. Sometimes not a soul could be seen for hours. Mostly it's just you and the river, like it's yours alone. And it many ways, it is. We never tired of just sitting and watching.

The week often became a battle between wanting to explore the area and remain cocooned at the cottage. The cottage always won.

I was lucky enough to spend several years as a travel journalist. I think this may be my favourite place in the world.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Tom and Jayne, We were thrilled that you contacted us immediately on your arrival at the cottage. Your 'Breathtaking' comment was more than we could have dared to hope for. We were delighted that at the end of your stay your sentiments remained a constant and that you had enjoyed exactly the holiday you wanted. However, even with your very real positivity, we could not have imagined such a wonderful review as you have kindly submitted here. It is our turn to say we found it a 'Breathtaking review'. We thank you for it and the amazing photos you have sent us of your holiday! Your years as a journalist shine through!! The fact that you have already booked two weeks for August 2018 persuades us that you have not just sought to flatter us and that is the most rewarding element. You will obviously be most welcome return guests. Thanks again Mary and Graham

Perfect!

Lovely welcome and spotlessly clean. This is a beautiful cottage in exquisite gardens with lovely views along the river. A perfect place to relax and watch the world go by. Many people write that they will tell their friends - we won't be because it's our secret! Bob and Margaret Garvey

Believe the reviews

  • 5 of 5

We chose this cottage because the description seemed to suit our needs. So often you read reviews to assist you in your final decision, you balance the good against the not so good and then click still fearing that the leap into the unknown you have just taken could be a waste not only of your money but of the time reserved for your precious and deserved break. Well on our experience of this property, believe the 5 star reviews, rest easy and click away. The cottage is all the things it boasts in the owners description and a bit of what they can't boast of, the sense of peace, the sense relaxation in a well appointed home and in secluded and tranquil surroundings and above all when the holiday is regretfully over, getting the true feeling of your batteries being recharged. We stayed for a week and having visited the general area before found plenty of places to visit from this location. In an hour or so you can visit historical sites or the coast with some beautiful beaches. However don't feel guilty if the property lulls you into just lazing there, relaxing with a book in the garden area or dipping into the pool or the river, either in the canoe or for a swim. The cottage itself is all the glowing reviews say it is. One more thing, the owners Graham and Margaret, together their representative at the cottage,Lucianna, were helpful and professional assisting with a smooth transition from booking to vacation. Few things are certain about holiday lettings but I think one thing is about this one,you will probably want to return.

Our ideal holiday home!

  • 5 of 5

This is a true home from home! The location is superb. It is furnished, decorated and equipped to a high standard both inside and out, and at the end of our stay we just did not want to leave! We had lovely weather and thoroughly enjoyed lazy days in the shade of the trees with the occasional cooling dip in the plunge pool! Luciana the local agent is charming and very helpful, providing good advice about local restaurants etc. All in all, without any doubt, one of the best weeks holiday we have ever had! We shall be back.

Location

Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

We are loath to suggest that this particular house alongside the river should only appeal to a 'special interest group'. Its unique location means that it will attract as many non specialists as those fishermen who will want to take advantage of their own canoe on the river!

We had waited for five years for this house and we certainly have no specialist interest....... other than being in/on the river, eating out in the warm sunshine, reading on comfy recliners, walking in the open countryside and having a lovely house to retire to!

Coast/Beach:

This was another major attraction for us. To be able to get to a range of spacious Mediterranean beaches within a reasonable driving time (1 hour) then walk in the sun with feet in the sea for miles, is a realisation of a major dream!

Nearest beaches are: La Grande Motte & Le Grau du Roi. L'Espiguette, near Aigues Mortes stretches for kilometre after kilometre of fine sandy dunes. The vendors advised us that Sete and St. Marie de la Mer are well known for their wonderful quayside restaurants! We have now visited enough times to confirm this ourselves!!

Travel:

We have always driven down in the past. It is wonderful driving on the motorways in France! The toll roads are worth the money, if getting down quickly is the aim. One night's hotel stay on the journey may be necessary, depending on the time you get on the Tunnel train or ferry. The house is 10 mins. from autoroute A9. A car is essential anyway!

Flights to Montpellier, Nimes and Bezier are available from different operators.

House is @20mins from Nimes and Montpellier.

1hr 20 mins from Beziers

Distances:

Most immediate perhaps: 1 km from the village of Aubais, 8km from the mediaeval town of Sommieres, 25km from the unmissable Montpellier, 20km from Nimes, 70km from Avignon,40km from Uzes, 58km from Arles, and 63km from Pont du Gard.

We shall leave booklets on possible visits for you on the shelf of the bibliotheque in the cottage, without wishing to be prescriptive in any way. We shall forward to you, in advance of your stay, a 4 page document of places we always try to visit during our stay at the cottage. Past guests have found these useful!

The housekeeper:

Lives locally and knows the area very well including the eateries. We have been thrilled to read, in the Visitors Book, of the warmth of character that Luciana has demonstrated to our guests.

When previous guests have left, Luciana will have spent 5 hours cleaning and putting out fresh items for you both in readiness for your stay. She will be there to meet and greet, be available to assist you in need and to see you off on the day of departure. For guests staying for two weeks she will arrange a time with you for her to be able to come to change sheets etc.

OTHERWISE THE COTTAGE IS ALL YOURS FOR THE DURATION.

Further Details:

Languedoc is perhaps Southern France's best kept secret: Sleepy villages of sun warmed stone houses with red tiled roofs. Consequently it is unspoilt by mass tourism. There is, all round you, magnificent scenery and plenty of opportunity for rambles among herb scented hills, straight from the house or elsewhere. To have your own river is special but there are many other deep gorges tumbling into cool, inviting rivers. The River Gardon and its gorges, are nearby, with swimming, canoeing and more riverside walks. We saw beavers and 20 cormorants roosting on just one tree on the banks near Collias last time we walked to the famous Pont du Gard ( We shall leave details of this particular walk since it is so special)

WE COULD NOT POSSIBLY SAY ENOUGH IN THIS SPACE TO DO JUSTICE TO WHAT ABOUNDS! YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO COME AND SEE FOR YOURSELVES.

Booking Notes: OWNERS DIRECT are now offering a BOOK WITH CONFIDENCE scheme that will safeguard you against phishing and misrepresentation if you book any property with them by pressing BOOK NOW on their web page. We have enabled this on our site because it will be important to any new guests who do not know us. It also affords you the extra security that credit card payment allows and which we cannot provide. Those return guests who do know us may continue to book directly with us as you have always done. We would still encourage anybody interested in booking the cottage to phone to talk with us before you click on 'BOOK NOW'
We shall forward to you our own Terms and Conditions which will explain your options more fully. We should encourage all potential guests to read the PROTECTION PRODUCTS on the OWNERS DIRECT WEB-PAGES and phone us to confirm our identity before you do anything else.
We shall be advised of any enquiry for our Riverside Cottage by Owners Direct . We shall then make direct contact with the enquirer.
If asked for vacancy information a 'Booking Conditions' will be sent, together with further information to help with decision making for 2018. A Booking Form will also be sent later, depending on how you wish to book. This will be for completion by the guest. A £120 deposit with the booking form will secure the holiday, the outstanding amount should be paid 45 days before the commencement date PLEASE! We regret that we shall be unable to reimburse for cancellation of a holiday, through no fault of our own, unless advised of cancellation 15 days in advance of final payment date. Final payment date will be stated at time of booking. PLEASE TAKE HOLIDAY INSURANCE!
Obviously we should encourage you to make regular contact with us. We shall remain available after this early contact to help in any way we can!
Changeover Day:
This will be Saturday ( NO OTHER START DATES), during the letting period.
