" ESPECIALLY FOR TWO" : A cottage in AUBAIS 8km from SOMMIERES

PLEASE NOTE:
SO SORRY TO HAVE TO SAY :NO POOL THIS YEAR ......HURRICANE DAMAGE. SEE REDUCED PRICES
NB. BOOKINGS START & FINISH ON A SATURDAY
We purchased the house in March 2014. We know from experience as holiday seekers that 10 years in by can be a long time on the wear and tear of any holiday home.
SO
Since the purchase we have returned each year to holiday and to update various aspects of the cottage in order to provide, hopefully, a lovely holiday home in the country but not isolated. We have French neighbours with whom we have an excellent relationship….. they are very quiet and discreet.
Being ready for you has to be our priority in what we do during our stays as well as having our housekeeper, a professional team of cleaners, and an irrigation expert, nearby for any of your immediate needs. We shall have cleared the site of the damaged pool before your arrival.
We focus on the gardens and grounds as much as inside the house and try to keep our photos up to date so that what you see is what you get!
OUTSIDE: The Mediterranean styled garden is on three levels and so we have tried to make sure that there are opportunities to relax on each. We have sought to provide plenty of comfy padded recliners and seats on the 3 levels of the riverside garden. We have also provided a ' plancha' on the upper level of the garden for all alfresco dining.
No guests had stayed, due to Covid, since Summer 2019 until 2022. We were able to return during to the cottage during 2020 and 2021 to do all that was necessary to keep the cottage fresh and bright!

Our highlights
Most importantly for us is the fact that we have our own private access to the river and canoe, which we purchased from a local kayaking company, KAYAK VERT, together with the necessary life jackets for the safety of our guests.
During October 2018 we had work done on the step down to the canoe to make entry a little easier for all of us!! Our regular guests much appreciated that alteration.
The metal seat, by the steps to the river, allows views down river whilst the recliners afford you extended periods to relax in the sun with views upriver. We are leaving binoculars for you all but if you are a real watcher you may wish to bring your own, too.
The huge cypress trees on the upper level ensure that there is always shade in which to sit on even the hottest of days.
We believed, from the outset, that all guests would be spending much of their time in the garden and cooking alfresco on the plancha on the upper level of the garden....and that has proved to be the case!
We do hope that everybody will be able to take advantage of the cool that the canoe on the river offers during those hot days.
We updated the watering system In September 2021 to ensure that the plants in our garden have a chance, as best we can.
We also renewed the garden lighting to ensure that sitting outside when it is still very warm and welcoming is desirable even in the dark!
Our 2023 guests were the last to witness these updates.......See their reviews!

INSIDE UPDATES SINCE BUYING IN 2014.

Inside the house we have, again, done everything we could to provide comfort and warmth or 'cool' within an enviable environment. Each year we have tried to make a major improvement.
THE LATEST UPDATE WAS THE NEW AIR CONDITIONING UNIT THAT WE PUT INTOTHE GUEST BEDROOM DURING OUR STAY IN NOVEMBER 2022.
THE TOSHIBA CONSOLE U2FVG R32 MODEL.
We then totally redecorated that bedroom. We hope that all of the 2024 guests will welcome this innovation!
Previously we have put in a new bathroom, installed a totally new kitchen and totally updated and decorated the lounge/ dining areas. (See recent photos).
Rather than for us try to list all of the changes it would be better for you to see the updated photos and to read the reviews of our guests over the past 5 years.
We have now had our first 7 years of welcome guests. We were totally booked for our seventh set of guests booking their 2020 holidays. Sadly none were able to come because of Covid. ALL were totally refunded. We did not even make the cottage available for 2021 BUT we were delighted to welcome old and new guests during 2022 and 2023.
We should like to thank each and everyone of our past guests for their encouraging words NOT JUST THOSE WHO HAVE WRITTEN LOVELY REVIEWS FOR THE WEB-PAGE, but also all the guests who have left equally appreciated feedback in the VISITORS BOOK and sent texts directly to us.
We have since learned that those return guests who have booked their 2nd, 3rd or more holidays directly with us are no longer permitted to send in reviews of their holiday to Home Away. We learned that some owners had abused the system and so only guests who have booked directly with Home Away were able to write reviews and rate us on their 5 star system! VRBO who took over from Home Away are doing the same.
The VISITORS BOOK IS LEFT AT THE COTTAGE for you to see the comments if they are excluded from now on or should you need confirmation. We hope that your experiences at the cottage will encourage you to write, too!

REGARDLESS OF HOW YOU BOOKED THE COTTAGE IN PREVIOUS YEARS:
We should like to thank all guests for the care that they have taken of the property throughout their stays. It was encouraging that so many appreciated the input from our housekeeper, in our absence. We have passed on that appreciation during each of our holidays at the cottage.
Our housekeeper oversees the professional cleaning team who will come in after each set of guests leave. They started working with us in 2022. We had been waiting to work with this team since 2019.We look forward to working with them again during Summer 2024.

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL PAST GUESTS WE HOPE TO WELCOME YOU BACK AT SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE.

Bliss for a week
We had a wonderful stay at Mary and Graham's beautiful cottage. The house and surroundings are idyllic with everything you could need at hand for a restful and stress-free stay. We ventured out for a few day trips but the cottage was so wonderful we were very happy to spend time relaxing and enjoying it! Luciana the house-keeper was so helpful and friendly and Graham and Mary were the perfect hosts and made sure we had everything we needed both before, during and after our stay. A massive thank you to Mary and Graham for sharing their stunning home with us for a week, pure bliss!

Especially for Two is Exquisite and Superbe!
A very restful and peaceful week for our 5th wedding anniversary. Graham & Mary have made so much effort to make this beautiful cottage so welcoming. Their exquisite taste in every single detail is just lovely. Words really cannot paint the picture of how beautiful the whole house was decorated, and the garden is divine with beautiful views of the river below. The kitchen is well stocked, lovely towels in the bathroom, tastefully chosen linen in the bedroom, plus so many lovely artefacts dotted around. The monsoon shower is fantastic and what a bath! Cooking outside is a must, on the brilliant Plancha in the garden. We are sold on the idea and will be buying one when we get home! Our welcome by Luciana was so nice and she provided us champagne for our anniversary and bottles of wine which we thoroughly enjoyed during the week!! Fred, the Gardner also popped in, and he was lovely and really helpful too!! Lovely places to visit nearby, but quite frankly, who would want to leave this place as it is spectacular!! A relax in the Sun in various spots all around the garden, a dip in the pool and maybe some lunch on the various tables dotted around the garden, then enjoy the canoe and paddle down the river. Everything is on your doorstep and you really do not need to go anywhere else. Our suggestion would be to stock up for a week or two with lots of good food and wine and your holiday will be the most relaxing holiday you could ever imagine in this region of France!! C'était Super!

Perfect holiday stay in a stunning setting
We had a wonderful stay! This beautiful house is spacious, clean and well-equipped. The garden is a real gem with its river view and lots of places to eat, sunbathe or just sit and relax. The location is a great balance between seclusion and peace with easy access to nearby the nearby towns and villages. The owners' love for the house is obvious, but they really want you to feel at home and provide plenty of helpful info about the local area. Luciana couldn't be more welcoming and helpful. Hugely recommended.

Beautiful but too hot inside during summer
No air conditioning makes it unbearably hot in the summer months. Temperature inside sits at over 30 degrees Celsius. No mosquito nets so if the doors are left open at night, the mosquitos invade. There is no security to the doors or windows (like metal mesh screens) so it is unsafe to leave the doors or windows open overnight. With doors shut the place becomes an oven. TV did not work during our stay. Could not even watch Netflix. Property overlooking river but access to river and canoe is dangerous. You need to descend on a naturally occurring slope to get to the two narrow steps above the river. No platform / jetty. The plunge pool is permanently full of pine needles. The cleaning robot makes little difference. Access may be difficult for older people. If you have the slightest mobility issue this property is not for you. Nicely decorated throughout. Settee below standard seat height (only 13") so even average height people would sit with their knees up. Saggy too. Bed - not standard length, would not fit a taller person. The mattress is very comfortable and so are the pillows. Bedsheets - very nicely ironed and of good quality. Towels - good quality but only hand, face and bathroom towels provided. No pool towels provided. Kitchen - well appointed, good and spacious fridge freezer but no frying pan and no coffee machine, just a coffee plunger. The outdoor furniture shows its age but it is charming and of good quality. The house is not quite as isolated as you are made to believe. There are neighbours on either side and the bamboo fence provides little privacy. There is an outdoor hot plate (plancha)which is slow and not as versatile as a BBQ but will provide an alternative to cooking indoors in unbearable heat. Car is a must. There is no shopping / no restaurants in the vicinity.

Stunning!
Having holidayed in France since the early 1990s, our immediate reaction when seeing this house was wow! As our stay continued we really appreciated all the care and attention to detail that had been given to every item in the house - everything had been thought about. The garden areas, with a choice of sitting locations, was excellent with flowers and shrubs to admire - complete with an automatic watering system. The pool and riverside view completes a house which just keeps giving and giving. There are so many areas to visit especially the Sunday morning market at Calvisson - this is not to be missed - Uzes, Pont du Gard, Sommieres, Arles and many more. Luciana (the housekeeper) is an absolute treasure and a font of knowledge - another asset to providing you with a wonderful holiday. This is a holiday home not to be missed!

We had spent all our married lives trying to find holiday properties that provide all that we need as a holidaying couple.
We have been to lovely villas, cottages & apartments but so many were keen to sleep up to 5+... that was more than we needed!
Having discovered the wonders of France, we sought a LIFESTYLE CHANGE of our own. We are lucky enough to be the owners of a beautiful home on the river and to be in a position to offer it for the exclusive use of other couples for whom 'especially for two' will resonate. This we could not do without the amazing support that we get from Luciana, our appointed concierge/housekeeper. Luciana does not stay at the cottage but she does live locally so will be available, should you need her. She will always be there to greet you and to say goodbye but otherwise will leave you to enjoy your holiday alone, unless you need her.
A member of our team will come in to prepare the garden for your arrival but probably before you arrive. Fred irrigation will come into clean the pool and set up the robot for the week, but again probably before you arrive. He has set up the irrigation system in the garden to give the plants a chance.
We love nothing better than sitting by the river watching nature, dining or reading in an idyllic environment!
Taking the canoe on the river, enjoying coffees and snacks in charming French villages, walks in the countryside or along sandy beaches are all part of ' THE DREAM WE WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU!'

Why they chose this property

We first holidayed in France in 2003 and spent 5 years to 2008 staying at different locations throughout France.
BUT THEN ,during the 5 years between 2008 -2013, our holidays were all on different riversides in the South. The unbelievable peace and tranquility of these riverside holidays persuaded us that we should seek to find our own holiday home within such an environment.
The fact that it took us 5 years to find this corner of paradise shows how rarely they turn up.
The river was our priority, indeed all 'outside demands' were to be most important because 80%+ of our life in France was to be outside, away from crowds. The photographs say more than we can about our riverside home!
Another reason we chose this cottage is that the interior was unlike anything else we had seen. We have sought to preserve and develop all that it ever was. The eclectic mix of antique and new, comfort-concentrated furniture is, we believe, what makes it special.
The climate is ideal and the two large cypress trees on the upper level afford shelter from the fiercest sun. When staying around the cottage we tend to spend the greater part of the day on the upper level. When the upper level is in shade later in the afternoon we go down to the lower level to read. Going on the river in the early evening is magical and then there are wonderful walks from the cottage before dinner!!
Even after dinner the garden remains a major attraction and the garden lighting allows for all we could want to enjoy in the garden.
Then there is the lovely warmth of the interior of the cottage.
NEW TV is geared up for UK channels should you wish to catch up with the news etc. The HUMAX box affords you the opportunity to catch up on other favourites, too.

THE COTTAGE CONTINUES TO GIVE US THE SAME LEVEL OF JOY AND EXCITEMENT AS WHEN WE PURCHASED IT IN 2014! WE HOPE THAT IT MIGHT AFFECT YOU IN THE SAME WAY!

What makes this property unique

ESPECIALLY FOR TWO!.. is the focus for us as we invite guests to holiday in our French home. We cannot boast of the majestic size of the property but rather we are able to offer assurances that the 130 sq.m. of interior living space has been generously apportioned especially for two people.
It is lovely to live by the river, with our own small private pool, in the peace and quiet of the countryside and to walk in the hills from home. However, it is equally important to us that we can drive to the numerous thriving markets in the area, sit and ' people watch' in the coffee shops within villages and towns known throughout the world and enjoy all the beaches a short drive away. We are so lucky to have all these options available to us! We are delighted that all guests ( apart from the one unfortunate exception)so far have shared our enthusiasm for the cottage and its environs.
We hope that you might be one of our guests during 2023! We shall always seek to make you most welcome!!
