About the Owner
About Derek Arnold
I was relocated to Sophia Antipolis (Valbonne) in the autumn of 1997, working for an American IT company. My wife, Gay and son James immediately fell in love with Valbonne. James attended the CIV, international school and Gay started a concierge service for villa owners. During our 17 years living on the Cote d'Azur we are now regarded as locals and this year we took the decision to offer our home for the summer season. We hope that our guests will have a memorable holiday.
Derek Arnold purchased this villa in 1998
Why Derek Arnold chose Cannes - Grasse - Antibes
After a year of renting a house we decided in the autumn of 1998 to purchase a plot of land and build a villa to our own specification. Two years later in 2000 we finally moved in and have no regrets at all. What we really like about the area is that we have the best of both worlds; the sea and the mountains, and not least the wonderful warm climate all the year round. Nice international airport is a good hub for the international business traveller, or coming here to holiday.Quality of life has become more important as we become older.
What makes this villa unique
The key benefit we enjoy is living in a quiet lane but just a few minutes walk to Valbonne village. The fact that we do not need to drive to the local shops or restaurants in the Village is a real bonus.

Perfect villa in lovely french village
This is a wonderful villa in a great location - private and quiet once through the villa gates, but only a short walk into the lovely village of Valbonne - good choice of restaurants & small shops to browse and great market on a Friday. If you don't fancy the walk, there is ample free parking available. What really makes this villa stand out from others we have stayed in is that it is extremely well furnished and equipped, even down to basic kitchen supplies, pool towels and mosquito repellants in the bedrooms. Derek and Gay are perfect hosts - very responsive to queries before our visit & saw them on a daily basis when they popped in to clean the pool etc - not intrusive, but good to be able to chat through where to visit etc. This really felt like a home from home - perfect for a relaxing holiday with many good places to visit within about half hours drive; Antibes, Nice & Cannes.
Stunning villa in the beautiful village of Valbonne
We stayed at this beautiful villa set in the lovely village of Valbonne. The villa was just perfect. i can't say any negatives about it. The owners who were lovely and so helpful catered for all our needs - they have thought of everything you might need. The village itself is just a short walk away max 10 minutes - where it has lovely restaurants and shops. We will definitely stay again and highly recommend it. We had a great holiday. Thanks.
Typical Provencal villa with everything you need
The villa is furnished in keeping with a Provencal style and is very comfortable and clean with everything you need for your stay. We were looking for a restful holiday and this property provided just that. We spent most of our time outside, dipping in and out of the pool and relaxing in the lovely surroundings. The outdoor sofas were great for sitting out in the evening and enjoying a glass of Rose and the dining table under cover was a welcome relief from the sun when needed.
There are plenty of good restaurants in the village along with all you need for self catering - boulangerie, delicatessen, butchers and greengrocers, all of exceptional quality. Although pricier than a supermarket, we felt it was worth the cost to enjoy such good quality and to be able to avoid using up our precious holiday time queuing in supermarkets. The Friday market in Valbonne is well worth a visit but go early as it gets very busy.
We did do one trip out to Antibes but much preferred Valbonne and were happy to get back!
Whilst we chose not to have a car for this trip and enjoyed the walk to and from the village, we recognised that the walk back may be challenging for some especially when you factor in the heat.
The owners were extremely helpful before and during our trip. Derek was kind enough to sort out our taxi rides from/to the airport and rejigged arrangements when our plane landed several hours later than planned - Thank you Derek. The pool was checked early each morning and the owners were only a text away if you needed anything but otherwise they were unobtrusive.
If you are looking for a relaxing break with good food and restaurants within walking distance, this is an excellent place to stay.
Great Villa for 1 or 2 Families
We stayed here for a week in July 16. Overall the Villa was a good size for us and our friends (4 adults and 3 kids). My wife and I shared the smallest double which was quite small and due to the heat - quite stuffy. If the house had AirCon or Mosquito nets over the windows this wouldn't have been an issue. As it was it was bareable with the fan on constantly. We fed this back to the owner who I think will make every effort to improve this.
Everything else about the Villa was great, good size pool, good facilities and appliances. Everything you need is there including towels.
The owners - Derek and Gay are a lovely retired English couple who made us feel welcome in their home, Derek popped around every morning to check and maintain the pool and give any tourist advice required. He wasn't intrusive, in fact he's a really nice friendly guy.
The location in Valbonne is good (lovely and quiet), although you need a car really unless you just want to walk up and down the hill to the village for supplies everyday (expensive but very pretty, and hard work in the heat). We drove down so it wasn't an issue for us (If you are driving down beware of the heavy traffic south of Lyon! we lost 3 hours in Jams, even though they are Toll Roads the traffic was crazy), Derek pointed us to the best supermarket (E.L'Clerke in Grasse - 10mins) so we were able to get supplies inc fuel a lot cheaper than in Valbonne. There is a lot to see nearby, we went to Antibes (20 mins) a few times (lovely old town with good beaches - I would stay there next time I think!). We also went to Mandelieu-La Napoule (25 mins) a few times - to the beaches there - very good beaches, very safe for kids.
This was my first trip to the South of France and its worth noting that it isn't cheap, especially now the UK Pound Sterling is so weak! In fact, I think its probably one of the most expensive areas in Europe for holidaying. Having said that, it wouldn't put me off returning, the area is so beautiful and the weather is hot but not too hot (26-31C). As I mentioned before, although I loved Dereks house and would return, I think I would possibly try an Apartment in Antibe Old Town next time, lovely shops and good beaches and probably cheaper too.
Would I drive down again? Great roads and almost empty until you get to Lyon.
Hmm, not sure, maybe, but its a long way! Perhaps next time I would take 2 weeks and stop halfway for a few days......
Fantastic villa, fantastic location
My family (comprising my husband and I, Mum and Dad, My sister, her husband and two little children) have just come back from our stay at David and Gay's fantastic villa. It really is a gem - four lovely bedrooms, great living space and a gorgeous pool. The location and being genuinely walking distance from Valbonne village is fantastic. David and Gay are wonderful hosts, welcoming and helpful from start to finish. We cannot thank them enough. We look forward to returning!!
Wonderful property, superb hosts
Our family was so lucky to have selected your home for our family vacation. The home is beautiful and extremely comfortable, with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms ensure. The professional kitchen worked perfectly, the pool was welcoming and we all responded to the portico and tables overlooking the pool. In fact, we lived there every moment, breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or cocktails and dinner. You and Gay were terrific hosts, welcoming on arrival with local suggestions . You followed through for us during the whole stay and did all the little things that count. Pool cleaning, wines, cheese samples, so thanks so much. You also followed up with our bits and pieces left behind. Swimsuit and scarf arrived safely back to us in San Francisco. Thanks again for a terrific stay. We highly recommend your property , not only for its amenities, room layouts and kitchen facilities, but also because of the care and concern you showed us as your guests. Kindest regards, Betty Zlatchin
