Fantastic comfy house with great garden and views
About the Owner
I have lived and worked here in the Dordogne for the past 10 years, and love the easy pace of life, lovely sunny weather, food, drink and culture. I am about 10 minutes drive away from the cottage and so am easily available for ideas and information about an area of France that I love.

Fantastic comfy house with great garden and views
We loved the house and garden. The house was really comfy and cosy. We wanted for nothing and it really was a home from home. There wasn't the sterility that you get with some holiday cottages but nor did you feel as if you were staying in someone's home. The balance was just right. It was brilliantly dog friendly too. We had no concerns in the house with the dogs and they loved the garden. It was completely secure so we were to just let them roam outside. Good local walks too. Nice easy walk to the boulangerie in the morning and Verteillac was in easy reach for other supplies. Lots to do in the immediate area and also going slightly further afield. Really recommended.
Idyllic French cottage
Chez Lucie is a very quaint, pretty, French cottage in a tiny hamlet in the gorgeous Dordogne. It has a lovely feel to it and we felt at home as soon as we crossed the threshold. It is well equipped, has a lovely garden and Steph was very helpful. The area is excellent, close to the village of Cherval and the lovely town of Verteillac, but we also travelled to some of the most beautiful villages in the area (some with river side beaches) all within a 30 minute radius and to the beautiful St Emillion which was about an hour and half away. It was a very relaxing stay and we'd love to come back!
A lovely stone cottage in a small hamlet on the edge of Cherval village
Our family of four have just spent a relaxing week in this lovely cottage. The cottage has a secluded and pretty garden in which to enjoy the country views all around the property. We had a very hot week with temperatures reaching the high 30s but even in this heat the garden offers shady corners under the trees to get out of the hottest of the sun.
The property was exactly as described with all the necessary amenities to make this a real home from home. Steph is extremely welcoming and has clearly made a real effort to make the property a pleasant and relaxing place to visit.
The nearby town of Vertaillac has all the facilities that you need with a small supermarket - general store and several restaurants. It also has the advantage of having a very pretty central square to just sit and watch the world go by.
We spent the week exploring the area visiting some of the many chateaux nearby and the towns of Angouleme, Perigueux and Brantome. Brantome is a picturesque but busy spot in the curve of the river, Perigueux has many interesting Roman museums and sights to visit. One highlight of our trip was the night market at Aubeterre, which as well as offering good food and market stalls also describes itself as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
So a good week, we would certainly recommend this property, it offered us everything that we were looking for.
Fabulous holiday "Chez Lucie"!
We enjoyed our fortnight's stay in Cherval, "Chez Lucie". The house was well equipped & laid-out, and delightfully decorated. Stephanie had thought of everything! (She was charming and unobtrusive, but was available for any queries, if needed).
The area around Cherval/Verteillac is full of interesting towns and places to visit; and there are lots of markets and very reasonably priced restaurants to satisfy every "foody's" culinary and oenophile needs! There is even a lovely little bar in the village itself!...and a super bakery!.. Very handy!
We shall definitely be returning...
Activity and Interests
The river beach at Aubeterre (a 'plus belle village de France') is 27k away and the lake at La Jemaye is about 30 mins away, with its sandy beach, woodland walks, cafés and children's play areas.
Bergerac airport is 1 hour and 15 mins away, Limoges and Bordeaux are both about 1 hour 45 mins. The drive from the channel ports of Le Havre, St Malo, Cherbourg or Caen can all take less than 6 hours non stop. The TGV from Paris to Angouleme is 2 hours and 20 minutes, and, like the airports, car hire is available at the station.
The little village of Cherval (bar, bakery/tiny grocer) is about 6 minutes walk, Verteillac is only 5 minutes drive away and Riberac with several supermarkets, excellent market and other shops, 20 mins away. The historic cities of Perigueux and Angouleme are both 30 to 40 minutes away and the lovely tourist spots of Aubeterre and Brantôme are 30 minutes or less. You will also find many lesser known villages to explore close at hand.
Most of the towns along the nearby river Dronne offer canoeing trips and horse riding can usually be arranged at the local stables. The village of Cherval has public tennis courts and there are attractive public swimming pools in Verteillac and Riberac.
