About the Owner

We are Shirley & Jacques, retired professional couple. We live in village in NE England, close to our families. We enjoy holidays, cooking, eating out and walking. One of Shirley hobbies is soft furnishings as you will appreciate when you visit the Cottage.

The Shoemaker's has unique interiors and an extremely well equipped spacious kitchen. A stylish spacious cottage and garden, especially created for that perfect stay.

Charming and wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in the cottage. The property looks tiny from the road but once inside it is extremely spacious and very comfortable and well furnished. Everything you could possibly want is provided for. It is very quiet but close to all the amenities of the town and it has a fabulous location with a lovely garden running down to the river.

The owners Jacques and Shirley were great to deal with and easy to communicate with. Will definitely rent the cottage again when in the area.

A true home from home

  • 5 of 5

Shoemaker's Cottage is just about as far away from the one mug/plate/bowl per guest mentality of some holiday rentals as you can get.

When I say everything is provided, I mean EVERYTHING - from a fully-equipped kitchen complete with all the cooking utensils you could possibly need to a handbag-sized sewing kit. It's like taking over a friend's home, with an invitation to help yourself to anything you find, including tea, coffee, jams and condiments. Dishwasher tablets, washing-up liquid, tea towels and bedding were also provided.

The stylishly-decorated cottage, complete with photographs of the owners' family, stands alongside the bridge leading into Newton Stewart's high street, with a terraced garden - complete with table and chairs on every level - leading down to the river.

Owners Shirley and Jacques are genuinely concerned that guests should enjoy both the cottage and the area, and provide a carefully-compiled tourist guide full of their own tips and recommendations for paces to see and restaurants and cafes to try. This was a boon as the town's tourist office is little more than a rack of leaflets from local businesses.

The couple are a delight to deal with, responding promptly to all communications and even calling us the day after we arrived to ensure that everything was to our satisfaction - and the bond we pre-paid in case of damage was returned within a couple of days of our return. We've been telling all our friends and family what a gem Shoemaker's is, and showing them our own pictures which prove how true to life the pictures on the website are.

Beautiful riverside cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a gem! This cottage has everything you'd need from hairdryers to hand wash, rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated and very clean. We loved the split level lounge down to the kitchen with patio doors to allow a great view of the river. The garden is stunning, split into three different well planned areas with lots of seating and benefitted from full sun well into the evening so we all enjoyed a barbeque as we were fortunate with the weather! The children were delighted to find swing ball in the little summer house, a great addition. The upstairs is again furnished to a high standard with fabulous views of the river, we only wish we'd booked two weeks instead of one!

very good house with a beautiful garden down to the river Cree.

  • 4 of 5

very well resourced house with fantastic garden. Most impressed only problem with the house was the heat on the top floor when the outside temperature reached 32 degrees made it hard to sleep insulation in the roof would be good. The rain fell and the river rose so it all looked dramatic from the house and garden. The town is quiet with hidden gems in the nearby area. We would certainly come back.

Lovely vacation home

The property is a very homey place. As comfortable as any rental property we have ever stayed at. Good base for exploring the SW part of Scotland. Especially great location for hiking in National Parks. Wonderful people to work with. Great overall experience.

Sensational Shoemakers

  • 5 of 5

We chose this cottage as a centre for a family walking holiday over the Christmas period. The cottage promised us everything we needed and delivered a lot more. The facilities are first class and we found everything we needed for our stay within the cottage. When we arrived the cottage was immaculately clean and warm and having a good selection of shops in Newton Stewart within walking distance of the cottage got us stocked up for our holiday. The owners kept in touch with us from our booking until we arrived, calling us a few hours after we got there to ensure everything was OK - you can't get better service than this!

We were there for a walking holiday and chose this location because of its close proximity to mountain, forest and coastal walks. There were many guides and maps within the cottage for us, although some of these do need to be updated as they are a few years old. This would also be a good base for sightseeing in Dumfries and Galloway including the coastal areas, Isle of Whithorn and the Rhins and is also an excellent mountain biking area.

This is a luxurious, clean and warm cottage to stay in and we would certainly recommend this to family and friends but don't try to book it next Christmas, we have already decided we are going back!!

Location

From the Owner

We holidayed at the Shoemaker's 10 years ago and fell in love with both the charm of the Cottage & garden and the outstanding unspoilt beauty of the area. When were advised that it was for sale we jumped at the chance to buy it. It is in an ideal location: on the River Cree, two hundred yards from the small town of Newton Stewart. There are variety of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. A walkers/bikers and star gazers paradise awaits you at Kirroughtree Forest only 2 miles away. The first Dark Sky at Night in Scotland. There is nothing as relaxing as watching the river whilst sitting in the garden or inside the house.

Facilities

From the Owner

Originally the Shoemaker's Cottage, built in 1772, has been painstakingly renovated, retaining its character and original features. It has been described as 'the Tardis by many of our guests. Spacious, but retaining the charm and intimacy of the original structure. We have tried to give it a ' home from home' feel with original paintings and Shirley's soft furnishings. We also supply extras as toiletries, tea, coffee, washing up liquid, foil/cling film, condiments, jams, sauces that many other cottages leave out. As one of our guests said " after a day out a joy to return to"
