About Shirley & Jacques Raad

We are Shirley & Jacques, retired professional couple. We live in village in NE England, close to our families. We enjoy holidays, cooking, eating out and walking. One of Shirley hobbies is soft furnishings as you will appreciate when you visit the Cottage.

The Shoemaker's has unique interiors and an extremely well equipped spacious kitchen. A stylish spacious cottage and garden, especially created for that perfect stay.

Shirley & Jacques Raad purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Shirley & Jacques Raad chose Dumfries & Galloway

We holidayed at the Shoemaker's 10 years ago and fell in love with both the charm of the Cottage & garden and the outstanding unspoilt beauty of the area. When were advised that it was for sale we jumped at the chance to buy it.

It is in an ideal location: on the River Cree, two hundred yards from the small town of Newton Stewart.

There are variety of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. A walkers/bikers and star gazers paradise awaits you at Kirroughtree Forest only 2 miles away. The first Dark Sky at Night in Scotland.

There is nothing as relaxing as watching the river whilst sitting in the garden or inside the house.

What makes this cottage unique

Originally the Shoemaker's Cottage, built in 1772, has been painstakingly renovated, retaining its character and original features. It has been described as 'the Tardis by many of our guests. Spacious, but retaining the charm and intimacy of the original structure. We have tried to give it a ' home from home' feel with original paintings and Shirley's soft furnishings.

We also supply extras as toiletries, tea, coffee, washing up liquid, foil/cling film, condiments, jams, sauces that many other cottages leave out. As one of our guests said " after a day out a joy to return to"

Lovely homely cottage by the riverside surrounded by stunning countryside and near to the coast also

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is lovely and we were made to feel very welcome. It has everything you need, and plenty of space so that you don't feel on top of each other. The garden is lovely with views over the river, and the ducks are s friendly welcome each morning! The cottage itself is in a great location for exploring the surrounding area with local facilities that more than meet for your need for your stay. The coastline in the surrounding area is well worth a visit and a short drive into the new Galloway forest takes you to further stunning views of the area. We would highly recommend s stay at the shoemakers!

The cottage was absolutely amazing, it was extremely clean and well kept and had everything we could possibly need. We particular enjoyed the huge 3 tiered garden during the sunny evenings.

Gorgeous - a stunningly beautiful cottage with everything you could want, and more.

  • 5 of 5

Just spent a lovely few days at the fabulous Shoemaker's Cottage - we took a chance and booked after looking at the photos. We were not disappointed!! As soon as we opened the front door we knew we'd made the right choice.

It's immediately obvious a huge amount of care and attention has been lavished on the cottage, with gorgeous decor and very comfy living areas. The accomodation is very clean and spacious, with everything you could wish for. It really is a home from home, but with that extra special something. The weather wasn't good enough for us to spend time in the garden, which is again looked after to the same high standard, with plenty of places to sit and watch the river.

Favourite room? It has to be the amazing upstairs living area with original beams and views across the river. Will we be back? Most definitely. We loved it. Our thanks to the owners for making our break so special.

Lovely riverside cottage

Would thoroughly recommend this cottage. Perfect location on the edge of Galloway forest park. The cottage is well laid out and has everything you need. Shirley and Jacques are lovely and very efficient, checking during our stay that we were happy with everything. They also provided extensive information about the area which was very useful.
