About the Owner

I was born on the farm and now live here with my wife and young daughter. The farm is mainly beef cattle with sheep over the winter. The farm dogs Patch and Bob enjoy entertaining visitors and are a firm favourite with the children.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A selection of recent comments from our guest book:

August 2013: We've had a fabulous week here and the house has been perfect for our needs. Great day trips have included Padstow, Port Isaac, The Eden Project and the beaches of Bude. We also loved the cliff walks and cream teas at The Rectory, Morwenstow. The boys have loved fishing in the lake and caught buckets full of toddlers along with 5 larger common and mirror carp. Weather has been fab, just one wet day.

August 2013: Thank you for loaning us your wonderful holiday home for a week. We've had a fantastic holiday and enjoyed every bit of the house. we all agreed that we could quite easily give up work to live here permanently. PS Patch made it even more special.

July 2013: A wonderful place, thank you so much to Paul & Polly, especially on arrival. The cottage suited all our needs and situated in ideal place for exploring Devon/Cornwall. We are sorry to be leaving.

Excellent, family friendly cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect. An excellent space in a fantastic location. The cottage was clean and comfortable and provided us with everything we needed. We had a fabulous holiday and Paul and Polly were extremely friendly as were the two dogs, Patch and Bob.

We would definitely recommend this property and are looking forward to booking our next stay.

Both cottages are beautiful

  • 5 of 5

This time we stayed in the roundhouse (last october we stayed in the smaller cottage) - it was just as lovely and even though the roundhouse was full of us it never felt too busy or crowded because there is so much space. It was really cosy and comfortable even in a wet February and we just had a brilliant time, we went out and about too, there were plenty of interesting events to attend. We will definitely be coming back.

Spacious, well-equipped accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the roundhouse with our family and friends over New Years. Paul and Polly were very welcoming, as were the dogs and cows we met during our stay! The accommodation was very spacious and the kitchen was particularly well equipped. There was a cot and high chair provided for our baby, which was appreciated. We would definitely recommend and hopefully return at some point!

Beautiful family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay here. There was so much room for everybody(2 adults and 3 children...well 2 teenagers and a 6 year old!!) The farmhouse was very clean and tidy upon arrival, and the owners, Paul and Polly, made us feel very welcome. Our 6 year old loved time with the two farm dogs, Bob and Patch and it really kept her entertained!! The grounds looked amazing and if the weather had been a bit kinder to us, we would have walked down to the lake. It was really central to explore either Devon or Cornwall , so not far from the major roads, but on the other hand the farmhouse was hidden away so you felt like you were alone, very quiet and peaceful.

We would definitely recommend this beautiful property to anyone who was a couple or a family...just loved it!! Xxx

Country retreat

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful accommodation, fully equipped providing everything needed for a family break in the Devon countryside. Paul & Polly's Roundhouse is clean, homely, spacious and comfortable and our grandchildren really enjoyed playing with Patch & Bob the farm dogs. Fishing in the lake provided a tranquil setting and we enjoyed visiting Bude, Boscastle & Padstow. We would certainly recommend this property and the smaller house to family and friends.

Location

From the Owner

The family has farmed at Higher Hopworthy since 1960 - originally with a herd of dairy cattle. Now the farm has beef and sheep for fattening. Higher Hopworthy Cottage, which adjoins the farmhouse, would have been where the cattle were kept and fodder for winter feed was stored. The cottage was converted in 2001. The hexagonal building which gives The Roundhouse its name (and now the lounge), was originally built for the horse driven mill. The horses would have walked around a central drive wheel which was connected to a corn mill in the next door building (now the kitchen). Many of the exposed timbers in the lounge are original, and the building which is now the main bedroom, once also covered the patio area, and would have been used for milking cows. The Roundhouse was converted in 2004
