Villa near Sillans la Cascade, Cotignac, Var, Provence, France - Set In 2.5 Acres, Glorious Views, Rural Location, But Within Minutes Drive Of Sillans And Salernes

Recently completed south facing ‘Boutique Villa’, set in one hectare of olive trees and woodland, surrounded by magnificent countryside. A peaceful and quiet location, away from the 'hustle and bustle', to restore your inner calm. A courtyard with orange and lemon bushes encloses the outer ‘Orangery’, which leads to a large hall and 40ft sitting/diningroom with excellent open-plan kitchen. The Villa is furnished with an eclectic mix of antiques and modern pieces. There are numerous french-doors leading onto the first of two terraces overlooking the pool, with glorious views of the wooded hill opposite. Four ensuite bedrooms, all with views, baths and showers. The two main bedrooms have their own private terraces, which catch the morning sun. Wall mounted 55” 3D, Smart TV, wifi linked, Sky, with sports, movies, BBC, ITV, etc . Nice/Marseille airports approx' 1.20hours. The small village of Sillans la Cascade, (home of the famous ‘La Cascade’ waterfall), approximately 1km away, with an excellent boulangerie, several cafes and restaurants. Salernes (5 mins by car), offers a good range of supermarkets, banks, etc.

About John

Having had a varied history in Interior Design, Restaurants and Gift Shops and having always renovated the house that we lived in, we decided it was about time we built one to our own design.

We fell in love with the South of France 27 years ago, when we came down for a wedding in Cotignac.

We designed and built the house and grounds, having first bought 2 diggers and a dumper!

We shifted 2000 tons of earth, built 345m2 of dry stone wall, created 600m2 of house, garage, courtyard, terraces and pool and planted over 300 shrubs and hedging. We have finished the house, but will always be working on the garden and wood. That is a job for life!

Why John chose Haut-Var - Verdon

We bought this hill with a wood behind the Villa and to the North. This protects us from the winter Mistral. Opposite is another hill which catches the evening sun and turns gold...

Although it is blissfully quiet, we are ideally positioned for all our needs. Our local village is a brisk 20 minute walk away and provides the best baker, an excellent pizzeria and even boasts a Post Office. A few minutes drive away we have several pretty towns with excellent restaurants and bars. When other properties boast about being in a town for all the amenities at arms length, they also have the all night parties and dustcarts at 0500!

What makes this villa unique

We loved the fact that we could leave here at 6am and be in San Remo, Italy in time for coffee at 8am, 4 hours drive to the West is Northern Spain and we are within 80mins of 3 main airports. The coast that boasts the famous St Tropez, Cannes and Antibes is also 70mins to the South.

This is one of the last bastions of quiet, away from the main roads and flight paths, where you feel the silence percolating into your core and after a week here, you will not want to leave.

Out of season we can drive to a local restaurant with all the buzz of french life, then walk out into the deserted streets with the smell of wood fires and drive home on deserted roads, back to the stillness of the night, the owls hooting and the blaze of stars overhead.

Coast/Beach:

St Tropez is 46ml and St Maxime is 35ml away. Lovely to park at St Maxime and take the short ferry ride to St Tropez, (very invigorating) and in the busier summer months, avoids much of the traffic. Lac de St Croix, (a large man-made lake with beaches) is 20ml away. Pedalos and boats for hire, sailing and windsurfing too. Other water sports (canoeing, rafting and kayaking) can be found at the top fo the lac, at the famous and magnificent Gorges du Verdon (a favourite of Jeremy Clarkson), with the most spectacular views.

Travel:

Nice airport 1.15 hours away. Marseilles 1.30 hours. To get the best rates, it is important to book you car hire online, when you book your flights. Toulon-Hyéres is closer,but offers a much more restricted service. TGV stations at Les Arcs (25 mins) and Aix en Provence (1.30 hours).

Further Details:

Provence is truly a gastronomic delight. You can enjoy a simple family menu or a Michelin starred feast, The weekly markets offer excellent fresh produce, cheese, wine, olive oil, etc and are always full of local colour. Have a coffee and you will probably stay for lunch. The nearby vineyards produce very good wines (Provence is one of France’s largest wine making regions) and owners are quite happy to offer free tastings. The surrounding countryside is varied and beautiful. Consisting of hilltop hideaways, olive groves, vineyards and wonderful woods. It is not surprising that there are so many resident artists. The nearby villages are well worth visiting. Our favourites, Cotignac (great Tuesday market and many interesting shops), Tourtour (known as ‘The Village in the Sky’, because of it’s spectacular views) and Aups (gateway to the Alps and famous for it’s truffle market). There are summer concerts, jazz evenings and many brocante and Antique markets. Salernes has very good supermarkets plus the usual amenities. Plenty of local bars and restaurants. Very popular Wednesday and Sunday markets.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Our Villa has recently been built to the highest standard, using blocks made from volcanic rock. The french windows are double glazed using tinted reflective glass and the space between is filled with Argon. We also have ‘aluminium louvred shutter windows’, which can be closed during the hottest part of the day, but tilted to let the light in. All this means that the house stays beautifully cool. The pool is 10m x 3m and is one level of 1.6m deep. It has wide internal steps. It has the latest Ozone system to keep the water clean and clear, without the smell of chlorine. We have 7 terraces, including 2 private (with bedrooms 1 and 4) an internal courtyard with high walls and a summer diningroom. The internal specification of the villa is to a high standard and all the fixtures and fittings are new. THERE IS NO SMOKING IN THE VILLA OR GROUNDS. Outside: We have transplanted mature olives for shade, in front of the villa and there are other mature oaks to the front and back of the house. The pool with ozone system has glorious views towards Tour Tour to the SE and of the wooded hill opposite. 6 sunbeds with umbrellas for shade. More sunbeds on upper terrace. Summer dining area with seating for 8, gas barbeque. Garden with numerous olives, lavender and oak trees. There is a acre of wood behind the house. Many mature trees, right up to the villa, which brings nature (nuthatches, treecreepers, tits and finches) almost within touching distance. We have a sheltered courtyard with high walls, for growing plants susceptible to frost. We have our own wood for a sustainable heating supply. There is the beginnings of an ecosystem, with biodiversity at it’s centre. The aim is to encourage plants and animals to thrive. Utility Room: Utility room approached from either end by double swing restaurant doors for easy access! One and a half bowl sink unit, fridge, washing machine, drawer units, wine racks, iron and ironing board. CLOAKROOM with loo and basin. Linen, towels and beach towels included, changed weekly. Cleaning on departure included. Other: Study area with Escritoire. Very useful for a permanent computer base. Summer dining area with lighting

Fantastic property in wonderful setting

Our family of 8 adults spent a fabulous week here at the end of August. We chose the villa because of its location and facilities, including unusually for France, 4 en-suite bathrooms (note 2 of the en-suites are an integral part of the bedroom).Temperatures were exceptional, in the early/mid 30Cs but the villa stayed cool, and fans in all the rooms helped overnight.The bedrooms are large and beautifully presented, as is the whole house, which is south facing and set in a densely wooded valley, with stunning views. It is very peaceful and quiet. The owners live close by and were very helpful before arriving and while we were there and even arranged 3 taxis journeys to/from Nice airport at a sensible price. The local village (restaurant, bakery - closed on Mondays!- and cafe) are within walking distance, passing by the famous 'cascade' waterfall. Large supermarkets are a 10 minute drive away at Salernes and very good, as is the bakery opposite Casino supermarket. The villa is probably not suitable for young children because of the steps/levels and pool access. The weather was so good and the villa so comfortable and well-equipped, that we stayed at the villa most days enjoying the pool, gardens (giving shade), the peace and quiet and the BBQ! The wi-fi is excellent, even with 8 users and extends even outside the house and around the pool. We did venture out canoeing and boating just off D13 near Quinson (30 minutes away) and then drove on round the Lac de Sainte Cruz, which is stunning. And try velo-railing (www.velorail83.com) - it's brilliant (60 minutes away at Pourcieux). Hiking in the Verdon Gorge is very good - leaflets from the Information Bureau. Michelin local map 340 is useful for the area. If you fly into Nice terminal 1, be aware that most hire cars are collected from (and all cars are returned to terminal 2), a 5 minute free shuttle away, so it's probably quickest to make straight for T2 to avoid having to queue twice! Car rental returning is quite slow and slightly chaotic on a busy August Saturday! The security deposit was very promptly returned in full.The website very accurately describes the villa, which is hard to fault and we would certainly return.

Large beautifully furnished villa in sublime location

The modest front gate opens to reveal a small courtyard and the entrance to a beautiful villa that is spacious, stylish and graceful. The kitchen is large and very well-equipped; the utility room has a supplementary fridge and washing machine. There are two large double bedrooms with integral bathrooms, a smaller double with ensuite and a twin (also ensuite) - all beautifully presented with comfortable beds. Outside there is a dining area with BBQ and a further patio area with views across the valley and down towards the pool which is accessed via steps. The pool is unheated, but the water was an absolute joy for us as the weather was very hot during our stay. The location is serene and blessed with little light pollution, so at night we were able to watch the stars. We visited Nice and Cannes, we also went to Aups and some of the smaller villages in the area. Tourtour is lovely. We sailed at Lac St Croix and went on into the gorge de Verdon which was well worth the drive. Overall, the stay was everything that we had hoped for: very comfortable, beautiful surroundings, peace and quiet and access to local places of interest. John and Margot are charming hosts. We look forward to a return visit.

Great location, great house

Fabulous house situated between Salernes and Sillans. Peaceful , open outlook. House had everything that could possibly be required on holiday as well as having one of the best swimming pools we have seen in a holiday home. Margot and John the owners are at the bottom of the hill and look after the gardens and pool as well as offering lots of advice about the local area. A brisk (uphill) walk to Sillans in the morning takes about 20 minutes and is rewarded by brilliant bread and croissants from the boulangerie (no calories in croissants due to the walk!) Many pretty villages within15km for restaurants, markets and scenery and the usual excellent supermarkets. Easy to get to lac de st croix and the gorges de verdon also. All in all a fantastic find.

Elegant and Peaceful Home in great location

We had a lovely fortnight at Villa Alta with our two girls (9 & 12) who nearly refused to leave! John and Margot were very welcoming and even went the extra mile of laying in groceries to cope with our late Sunday arrival when the local shops would be shut. The house is stylishly furnished but still felt homely and welcoming. It is excellently equipped with comfy beds and lovely linen and the British TV channels were a hit with the kids. The layout means there is lots of space for the family to spread out. Outside the different terrace spaces meant there was always a shady spot to sit and we loved eating outside at all times of the day, with plenty of BBQ possibilities. The views over the wooded valley are beautiful and it felt tranquil without being isolated. The pool was the focus of our stay and came complete with ball, snorkels, lilos and inflatable tyres to entertain the children. I found it a fraction chilly but everyone else tells me I was just being a a bit wimpy, so probably just me!

The house is in a great location for both relaxing and exploring. A choice of supermarkets is less than a 10 minute drive away which makes life very easy. We hit something of a hot spot with temperatures rarely straying from 32 degrees, so we did not sight-see as much as planned, but thoroughly enjoyed the short trips to delightful nearby towns like Cotignac and Aups with their lovely markets (arrive early - 9ish - to find parking and beat the main crowds), as well as stepping back in time in the winding streets of Tourtour (good pizza at La Place) and Sillans-la-Cascade (where you can also walk to the waterfall, but sadly no longer swim). We enjoyed visiting the troglodyte dwellings in Cotignac and Villecroze which are only small but make a fun outing with children. The highlight for our girls was hiring a pedalo to explore the Gorge du Verdon (easiest place to go is the beach just before the bridge Pont de Galetas on the D957, again arrive earlyish to beat the queues - we were there around 9.45am) Brilliant to swim off the pedalo right in the gorge. We went twice.

We would thoroughly recommend Villa Alta and hope to return! Only suggestion I would have is to leave a book for guests to share tips for outings etc. John and Margot can help of course, and I had done research online via Tripadvisor etc, but many of the local places do not have much of a web presence of their own, so a bit of experience sharing could be great.

Impressive villa with helpful owners

Villa as described, clean and well provided. We were five adults on a special family holiday, the villa impressed all with location, facilities, ambience and equipment. The owners live close by and provided helpful advice re visits, restaurants and local facilities including gifts of figs from the garden at intervals. We like cooking and cooked many meals on the gas barbecue in fact we ate every meal there out on the terrace. A small point but as the main cook I particularly appreciated kitchen knives that were sharp and did the job, indicative of the very complete kitchen equipment. High temperatures are not a problem as the house design and advice from the owners enables the house to be kept adequately cool.

Over two weeks we visited Nice, Aix and San Tropez in addition to the many more local attractions. The local countryside is generally wooded and hilly giving interesting rides and vistas. We particularly enjoyed meals in nearby Aups.

Bedrooms very comfortable and well equipped, overall one of the best family holidays we have had.

Fabulous villa in perfect location

This villa is the perfect base from which to explore this beautiful corner of France - especially recommended for families with older children who like the outdoors, or two families holidaying together (as there are bedrooms on both floors). The house is clean, well-maintained and equipped to a very high standard.

Just a short walk from the house is the cascade (48m waterfall) of the river Bresque, with beautiful turquoise woodland pools you can swim in. The Lac de Sainte-Croix, where you can swim and rent boats to paddle up into the magnificent Verdon gorge, is a 45 minute drive away.

The location of the house is perfect, and it's just so quiet! I woke up in the morning to the crowing of a rooster, and in the evenings the only noise was the chirping of cicadas. I could spent the rest of my life sitting on the veranda, watching the stars come out over the hills!

Prices shown, are for the property per week in UK pounds. Rentals are normally Saturday to Saturday in high season, but other options can be discussed, especially out of season. Guests are asked to be ready to vacate the property by 10am, while incoming Guests are asked to arrive between 4pm and 7pm. It is important that those times are adherred to, to enable the Villa to be properly cleaned.
