Overview

Property

Updated: 17-Oct-2016
Gite in Cherbonnieres, nr Saint-Jean-D'Angely, Charente Maritime, Poitou-Charentes, France - Peaceful Location, Ten Minutes From The Nearest Town

Le Beau Fief enjoys a tranquil setting amid a backdrop of sunflower fields and vineyards just a five minute drive from the delightful market town of Aulnay. Brimming with quirky character this sixteen century stone cottage has been newly decorated and furnished, retaining oodles of rustic charm with its exposed beams and Charente stone walls. The property looks out onto a 600 sq m walled courtyard, adorned with vines and kiwis providing a safe and relaxing haven for adults and children. Further fruit trees and seating areas can be enjoyed by guests on the 500 sq m plot opposite. The cottage is comprehensively equipped with all modern cons with many little extras we feel will make your holiday that little more special. We only ever rent to one party at a time, meaning you always have full exclusive use of the entire property and all it has to offer.

About the Owner

We are Richard and Victoria Houghton from the West Midlands. Whilst our main residence is in the UK, we love nothing more than hopping across the channel and soaking up all that France has to offer.

We have a passion for old properties and all things French, and have loved transforming what once was a tired-looking old house into the beautiful haven we believe it to be now.

We hope you can make it!

"We have had a lovely time as your first guests in your delightful gite. It is very homely, well equipped and we appreciated the 'extra touches'. We loved the area and will be back in the Charente Maritime very soon." - Charlie & Sue

A beautiful Gite in a great setting.

  • 5 of 5

We had a really enjoyable and relaxing holiday in Le Beau Fief. Peace and quiet is almost guaranteed and the owners have equipped the Gite to a very high standard with many imaginative touches which help make Le Beau Fife a real home from home. We were blessed with very warm and sunny weather so we were able to use the pool most days and we also made good use of the bikes which were a pleasure to ride on the quiet French roads. There are plenty of interesting towns and villages to visit within a relatively short distance and a little further afield we had a really nice day in La Rochelle. The Gite would be ideal for couples looking for relaxation or families who would have a great time making use of the pool and barbecue :)

True hidden gem in authentic French hamle

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I have just come back from spending 10 days at Le Beau Fief, and I must say what a gorgeous little place it is! I’m not normally one for writing reviews but felt compelled to leave a note as we were both so thrilled with the accommodation and the service we received. Everything was perfect, right from the initial enquiry, to the meet and greet to the little extra touches that the owners provide, we couldn’t really have asked for more. The gite was so cosy and inviting, well-equipped, the decor is adorable, and we both felt totally at home. When can we move in?!! The spot is is just lovely, so peaceful with lots of birds and farm animals, we made good use of the mountain bikes most days. It took us about half hour to get to Sainte where we visited the Roman Amphitheatre, which was quite spectacular. We spent lots of days mooching round markets and broccantes, and some of the resturants we visited were superb. This gite comes with a high recommendation from me, although I’m a little jealous other people get to stay there! Excited to be returning in September.

Home from home in an idyllic setting

A great gite which has been well thought out and we appreciated the extra touches the owners have added to make it comfortable and homely. The gite is well equipped, is in a quiet location, with a pool and is an ideal place to chill out. We really enjoyed our stay.

Location

From the Owner

On a holiday in 2012 we were immediately drawn in by the diversity that Charente-Maritime has to offer. We spent a week enjoying bike rides along the local lanes, picnicking by the river, lunching lazily in medieval towns & by the end of it, we knew we had discovered somewhere truly special. We returned just six months later when we stumbled upon what is now ‘Le Beau Fief’ and decided to purchase a little bit of France just for ourselves.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : La Rochelle at 80 Kilometres Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

The untamed, sandy beaches of the Côte Sauvage are around an hour away. They are extremely unspoilt and surprisingly uncrowded even in high season. Royan has a spectacular beach, stretching 2km and offering a range of water-sports.

Travel:

Own transport is essential.

Ferry Ports: St. Malo 4 hrs; Cherbourg 6 hrs; Calais 7 hrs; Caen 5 hrs; Le Havre 5 hrs 30 mins. Check Brittany ferries, P&O and Seafrance for prices and availability.

Airports: La Rochelle 55 mins; Poitier 1 hr, Angouleme 1 hr 20; Bordeaux 2 hrs. Check Ryanair, Flybe, BA, Airfrance & BMIBaby for prices and availability.

Distances:

Aulnay, St Jean and Matha are all approx. 10 minutes away by car.

Cognac and Saintes are around 30 minutes away and La Rochelle approx. 45 minutes.

Further Details:

Aulnay, St Jean d’Angely and Matha are all a short drive away, each offering a selection of supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants and banks as well as weekly markets which sell fresh regional produce. St Jean d’Angely is the bigger of the three, a beautiful medieval town with a pretty lake & picnic area where you can hire canoes & pedaloes. A go-carting circuit is situated on the edge of the town.

There are usually weekly ‘brocantes’ in the nearby towns during the summer, as well as the splendid ‘foires’ which are huge markets, that dominate the town centres for a few hours. The best are probably Saintes on the first Monday and Rouillac on the 27th of every month.

The chateaux at Dampierre-sur-Boutonne, La Roche Courbon, Crazannes and Panloy are nearby.

The local boulanger delivers to the hamlet three times a week, and usually has a good selection of breads and pastries.

Facilities

From the Owner

We love the tranquility that our properties provide, but at the same time, hop in a car and you can be amidst the hustle and bustle of a busy market town within 10 minutes. The property opens out onto acres of raw farmland, sunflowers galore and waivy maize fields. There’s not much to be heard other than the tweeting of birds and the tooting of the local boulanger who delivers bread to the hamlet several times a week. The property is part of a twelve-house hamlet, with a real sense of community spirit. We love the fruit trees that provide some much needed shade in the summer months and the privacy that the high-walled garden has to offer. We have put a lot of love into creating the perfect holiday home - we hope that this is apparent when you come to stay.
