About the Owner

We are a local couple living at the head of Swaledale on a hill farm where we breed purebred Swaledale sheep. Chris has farmed in Swaledale all his life, as has generations of his family before him. He has, however, roots in Low Row as his great, great grandfather was a lead miner living in a property very close to Hillcrest. Perhaps that was the extra ingredient that made us fall in love with Hillcrest Cottage! Being married to a farmer means little free time to ourselves so to keep myself out of mischief I welcome Bed & Breakfast guests to the farmhouse and am involved in a community project in Keld, help Chris with the sheep particularly at lambing time and write a blog. We are passionate about Hillcrest, our farming interests and all that happens in Swaledale and work hard to ensure guest's experiences are happy ones.

Great cottage in the countryside

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage with lots of space and all the facilities needed. Everything was clean and working. It was excellent having bike storage available and we found several good mountain bike routes from the cottage, but the hills can be steep. We would go back again to this cottage and do recommend it.

Excellent accommodation, in a absolutely ideal location for walking, cycling and sightseeing.

The views from this elevated cottage are fantastic, the cottage itself is very spacious but yet warm and cosy.

The beds are extremely comfortable, snugly and warm for a restful sleep.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful cottage with us, we can't wait for our next holiday at Hillcrest.

What a fantastic week we've just had!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in probably the worst weather you could hope for, rain coming in sideways, the River burst over it's banks flooding the roads in and out - what a start! We unpacked the cars, got the fire going, got some food into the oven and within minutes we started to simply unwind and relax in this amazing cottage.

The cottage has everything you could possibly need, from the well equipped kitchen, to the amazingly warm central heating and those log fires!!!!

The owner Glenda and her husband were only an e-mail away and responded incredibly fast to any query no matter how silly we sometimes felt for asking.

We would wholeheartedly recommend this property, 1 minutes walk and you are on the way up the beautiful hills. What more could you ask for?

We are already planning next Christmas!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a wonderful review of your stay at Hillcrest Cottage. Our aim has always been to create a warm, comfortable and welcoming haven whatever the weather (which unfortunately we have no control over) and this was certainly tested during your stay. Who knows, next year it may be snow?

Great Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Brilliant winter weekend break with kids and dog in this lovely, cosy cottage.

We enjoyed the lovely views across the Dale, well equipped kitchen, two wood-burners and comfy king-sized bed.

The house was very practical with access into the utility / boot room, a spare dog towel and lots of storeage.

We plan to return!

What a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Hillcrest is in a lovely position with great views from nearly all the rooms. It is well equipped, well furnished, clean, warm, has very comfy beds and is very quiet.

We had a meal at The Punchbowl Inn where we were made very welcome and it was a very convenient short walk away from the house, so no disagreements about who was driving.

Low Row is in such a good position for exploring Swaledale and close to Buttertubs which was on the Tour de France route. We were able to drop the men off at Askrigg so they could bike from there, up Buttertubs and through Muker (what a great name) and home to Hillcrest.

All in all Hillcrest is a home from home and we felt very comfortable there and would like to return to explore this beautiful part of England more.

Great!

  • 5 of 5

Everything that has been written about Hillcrest is spot on! It is a delightful cottage and the owners are very helpful and responsive. It was also ideal for our elderly parents who, like us, have stayed in many Dales cottages. A super week, we hope to return before too long.

Its good to hear that the cottage was suitable for everyone in your party; the young, the old and those of us who are in between! We hope to welcome you back to Hillcrest when you visit the Yorkshire Dales again. Chris and Glenda Calvert

Location

From the Owner

The village of Low Row, in the very heart of Swaledale is the perfect location for a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. The Punchbowl Inn, renowned for its good food & friendly ambience is a pleasant 5 minute stroll from the cottage and Reeth, often referred to as 'the gateway to the dales' with its pubs, cafes, newsagent, general store and gift shops is a mere 5 minute drive. Here you will also find The Swaledale Museum, Hudson House Visitor Centre & the Dales Cycle Centre. Low Row, formally a lead mining community, is an ideal base for all year round walking or for leisurely exploring the area by car or cycle. Cyclists can follow the Tour de France 2014 route that passes by the cottage and walkers have a choice of gentle strolls or more strenuous rambles over hills and dales.
