Farmhouse in Groslier, Compains, Puy-de-Dome, Auvergne, France

Sitting on the terrace of the house you can look out onto a stunning and fascinating landscape: facing you is a lava flow from one of the most recent volcanoes (only 7000 years old !) of the Parc Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne. Here you can also observe buzzards, kestrels, red kites (perhaps even a short-toed eagle). From the plateau above the house you can see the Sancy mountain range which includes Mont Dore and Super-Besse where we ski.

About Tim Hughes

We have both retired from long teaching careers and now at last have the time to undertake a long- time ambition of converting the barn and stable to living accommodation. When we purchased the property Lizzie was 4 and Toby 6 months. They have experienced many adventures as we slowly renovated the main house and still, fortunately, love Groslier as much as we always have.

We have been very warmly received into the community and recently were asked to join the local over-60s club. Meetings generally consist of playing cards and drinking wine, both of which we approve.

Why Tim Hughes chose Issoire area

We were looking in particular for access to skiing, for geological interest, and a peaceful location. As Jan is fluent in French we also wanted an area relatively undiscovered by Les Anglais. The house met all these criteria, plus the stunning views, additional hillside land and fascinating historical links with The French Resistance resulted in an immediate decision to buy!

My interest in geography and geology was more than met as we are in the Parc Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne. Basalt columns and granite outcrops abound. The volcanoes were last active 7000 years ago and are dormant today. We have instructed our children to check our house insurance in future years.

What makes this farmhouse unique

If you wish to have a day with no driving, you can walk up the hillside to join one of the many signposted routes across the Cezalier. In spring and summer the variety of flowers, butterflies and moths is unbelievable, plus watching buzzards, red kites and kestrels adds another dimension to what nature has to offer.

For day trips, our children loved the Adventure Park at Mont Dore. Jan and I preferred the restaurant.

After many February sessions at Super Besse, we are all competent skiers. Both children have skied in National races in England, albeit on artificial slopes. Super Besse is good for beginners and intermediates especially.

As we may be resident in the barn we would be more than happy to advise you on visits, but only if you wish!!

Notes on accommodation We live next door in the converted barn/stable much of the year so are on hand for any help or information you might want (or not as the case may be !) We also own some hillside woodland (approx 2 acres). House should be left clean at change over. Towels and bed linen not included. Available at £7.50 pp Bath mats, tea towels, duvets, pillows & mattress covers provided.

Fantastic games room and lovely hosts.

The house was great and had lots of space. The children loved the games room full of books, DVDs and board games. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need, even 2 raclette machines! Our hosts had lots of good ideas for places to go and things to do because they know the area so well. The swimming lake was lovely and we did the horseshoe walk around Puy de Sancy.

Spacious, well-equipped, lovely location

Lovely spacious house, well-equipped for all ages with helpful owners next door. Fantastic area for road and mountain biking, with a huge choice of well signed graded MTB trails within 30-minutes drive. The house is also well located for mountain walks, swimming in lakes, inflatable aqua parks (in the lakes at Super Besse & Lac Chambon), and canoeing down the Allier. We would love to return.

Beautifully situated property with stunning views

This property is so well equipped. We could not have asked for more. My children loved the attic and games rooms and we had so much space. The pictures on the web site do not do justice to the amazing views.

Tim and Jan are amazing hosts, they were so helpful and friendly when we sought advice but also gave us privacy. Thank you.

Beautiful country house in a great location

We enjoyed a wonderful half term break at Maison Laporte skiing and exploring the local area. The house was exceptionally well equipped and presented. We were made to feel very welcome by Tim and Jan- whose local knowledge and experience was also very useful. Our two children loved the games room; we all loved the views, space and peaceful location. Access to cross country and downhill skiing is straightforward even after snow falls as the local roads are kept in good condition- would recommend winter tyres though. Would love to return in the summer to see more of this under-rated part of France. We would definitely recommend this property to other families.

Wonderful family home in the countryside

This is a really lovely looking house which is incredibly well fitted out. It is warm and homely and has a play room that we all loved, children and adults alike, with darts, table football and more books and dvds than you can shake a stick at. Jan and Tim are kind. helpful and good fun to drink a bottle of wine with if you invite them for an evening :-) It's a great size house and for our two families gave plenty of room without feeling as though you're rattling around on your own. Everything was clean and pretty and I would recommend this to anyone. You do need a car as it is into the countryside. Nearby is Super Besse, a ski area that works as a a brilliant day out for families with lots of fun activities to do in the summer.

A Great Place to Stay

We were seeking a bolt-hole to explore the Auvergne region and Groslier proved to be the ideal choice. We had a party of 4 adults and 2 children and the property was perfect. As soon as the boys discovered the attic room they took it over, despite being allocated a downstairs bedroom. The immense library of DVDs left them entertained all week, along with the games room. The main reception room features the kitchen, dining table and lounge area, giving it a very sociable aspect. Add to the mix the breathtaking views outside and you have the recipe for a great holiday.

Our hosts, Tim and Jan, were very hospitable, striking a perfect balance between not intruding but being on hand to help.

We look forward to returning!
