Fontirosa is a 200 year old stone-built farmhouse with panoramic views over the Mugello valley and up towards the main ridge of the Apennines. The house is surrounded by 2½ acres of land and sits on a low south-facing hill. It is within easy reach of Florence, with Scarperia our local medieval town (designated amongst the prettiest in Italy). Fontirosa has been sympathetically restored, leaving as much as possible of the original features of the farmhouse including terracotta floors and beamed ceilings. It is comfortably and tastefully furnished and is equipped with all modern amenities, including WIFI. The house is a beautiful and comfortable base from which to explore the Mugello countryside and the Apennines and still have access to the rich cultural heritage of Florence, the rest of Tuscany and beyond.

About Tina Gericke
Fontirosa was our home for much of the time we lived and worked in Tuscany. We commuted for work to Florence and sometimes even to Pisa.
Our two daughters spent their childhood there, attending nursery and then primary school in the nearby village, and as a family we grew to be part of the community.
After 13 years we returned to the UK but treasure that part of our lives and maintain our close links with it through keeping on the house, and also sharing it with people who can enjoy all that it has to offer.
Tina Gericke purchased this farmhouse in 1991
Why Tina Gericke chose Mugello
Set in the Mugello valley, Scarperia is sufficiently independent of Florence to have its own character and culture.
Fontirosa, which is situated on a hill just beyond the village, allowed us to live a Tuscan country life but still have access to the rich cultural life of Florence; the exhibitions, school and universities, shops and restaurants.
What makes this farmhouse unique
Since the Mugello and Scarperia are not common tourist destinations, spending time there, you feel part of the real Tuscany. People are very helpful and kind.
We can recommend local places to go to, to walk and places to eat at.

Really lovely rustic Tuscan house
We have stayed at Fontirosa three times now, and we would go again. Our 3- and 6-year-old boys loved running wild in the olive grove below the house, and we all enjoyed the feeling of space and simplicity. We love the understated rustic elegance of the house and its furniture. Trips into Florence are easy on the train from nearby San Piero a Sieve, and it was great to escape back to rural tranquility after enjoying the bustle and grandeur of the city. There is one other house adjacent, but the two properties don't overlook each other at all, so you do feel like the space is your own. On a previous trip we had the sheer indulgence of fresh figs from the tree in front. This time our favourite memories include breakfast on the picnic table overlooking the valley, and relaxing in the hammocks overlooking the hills. Tina and John were very helpful and thoughtful in making our stay easy.
We had such a fantastic stay in beautiful Fontirosa - the location and views from the property are simply stunning - the farmhouse has every amenity you could possibly need - a well loved family home. We so enjoyed lazing in the hammocks, BBQ on such lovely evenings, the swing and the walk to beautiful Italian hill town Scarperia - (only 20 minutes walk away - look out for the Chianti cockerill and the fire flies on the way back - possibly one of the most magical experiences of our lives. Don't hesitate just book - it is like living ' Under The Tuscan Sun'
Wonderful place to stay in Tuscany
We loved this simple, spacious farmhouse, with its tiled floors and exposed beams. Wood-burning stoves and a huge open fireplace provided plenty of warmth and the pretty garden gave our children as much room as they needed to burn off energy. We played ping pong every day and ate outside whenever the sun shone - there are two outdoor tables with panoramic views. There was more than enough space for our party of 9 - including at the dining table and the seating in the living room. The small self contained cottage was a particularly big hit with two teenagers. Starting early one morning we fired up the formidable pizza oven and managed to get it hot enough by lunchtime for wood fired pizzas, which we ate all afternoon. The oven retained its heat for long enough to cook ratatouille and sausages the same evening and to slow roast a leg of pork overnight - delicious! It was still warm when we left the house three days later. We enjoyed our trips into Scarperia which we walked to several times using the pretty route described in the house notes. There is a very good children's playground in the town as well as a variety of useful shops and a delicious gelateria. Florence by train was very straightforward and an excellent day trip. Lots of other interesting things to see and do locally, though we enjoyed relaxing at the house just as much. Highly recommended to anyone who
is looking for a lovely Tuscan holiday. Many thanks from all of us.
We had such a wonderful relaxing stay at Fontirosa for a couple of weeks this summer. Our children who are 6, 4 and 2 had an absolute ball and especially enjoyed the tree house, exploring and swinging on the little wooden swing, while the adults relaxed and enjoyed the sun sitting under the vines. A very simple rustic and wonderful Italian experience, with sufficient space in the farmhouse for our extended family, and everything was there that we needed. Our stay was highlighted by evenings sitting under the stars watching the sun go down with a lovely view of the Tuscan countryside. The owners were extremely helpful with any local guidance that we needed and in particular they were very accommodating in recommending and arranging for us a superb evening at a local family run restaurant. We hope to come back again!
This was a "bucket list" trip to the Moto GP at Mugello. I've always loved the Tuscany area so to find an absolute gem of accommodation in Fontirosa really put the icing on the cake! Such a homely old farmhouse, full of character and history. We love to cook whilst on holiday using local ingredients & the impressive kitchen had every utensil you could ask for! Lovely bedrooms & bathrooms with jaw dropping views from every window. Beautifully presented throughout. Tina, the owner, was staying in the small house while we were there and was so very friendly and helpful (she even allowed us to followed her into Scarperia to find the best shops!) Nothing seemed to much trouble for her. I can't put fully into words how lovely a setting Fontirosa is in as it has to be sampled first hand to truly appreciate the stunning surroundings.
We will without doubt return in the future be it for the Moto GP or just a relaxing break.
All in all, i can't think of anything that could be improved except to stay even longer in future! A truly amazing place to stay at. 10/10.

Activity and Interests
The distance from Florence airport to Fontirosa is approximately 30 miles (taking about 45 mins in good conditions ); Pisa airport to Fontirosa is about 74 miles (taking +/-90 mins) and Bologna airport is approximately 60 miles away through the Appenines (taking +/-75mins).
While getting to Fontirosa by public transport is possible, a car is needed when staying there.
Scarperia is 2km from Fontirosa (a 5 minute drive or, alternatively a 20 mins walk on footpaths and tracks). A convenient rail link to Florence is available from San Piero a Sieve, a nearby town 12 minutes away by car. From there the train takes half an hour into the centre of Florence. By car, Florence is 35 minutes drive over the hills. Siena is 90 minutes by car, and Bologna 75 minutes. Day trips to Rome, Milan and Venice are possible, by high speed train from Florence (Frecce-Trenitalia).
Scarperia is a small town with banks, a couple of small supermarkets, three bakers, a pharmacy, numerous bars and a number of good restaurants ranging in price and sophistication. There is a weekly food and vegetable street market as well as a monthly antiques market and a regular programme of cultural events and gastronomic festivals (sagre). The town has a tradition of knife making dating from the 15th century. There is a magnificent small castle, now the town hall, library and museum. Throughout the year there are food festivals, celebrating the local country fare of tortelli, truffles and funghi porcini. Wine can be bought draught (sfuso) directly from the local Frescobaldi vineyards.
The house offers a beautiful and comfortable base from which to enjoy the Mugello countryside: walking (also up in the Apennines); cycling; horse-riding and golf. Watersports are on offer at the nearby lake Bilancino include, sailing, canoeing and wind surfing. The area too is rich in bird life: Gabbianello is a designated wetland area which forms part of the lake. The Mugello is not however spoilt by tourism. The attractions of the better known areas and towns of Tuscany, such as the Chianti, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Lucca are within easy driving distance. But in addition the Mugello has many of its own lesser known but charming towns and villages, which are steeped in history and set in a rolling landscape that gives way to the more rugged Apennines behind. It is also within reach by road or local train of historic towns on the other side of the Apennines such as Bologna, and Ravenna with its world famous mosaics.
The Mugello race circuit where the annual Italian motorbike grand prix (motomondiale) is held, is another local attraction.
