To the Lighthouse. Traditional Style Holiday Chalet near Beach. West Cornwall

Overview

Property

Updated: 12-Nov-2016
Chalet in Phillack Nr. Hayle, Cornwall, England - Quite Location. Fabulous Beach. Ideal For St Ives, Penzance & Lands End. 4 Minutes Walk To Beachea

“To the Lighthouse” is a detached, privately owned, traditional style, holiday chalet. All the rooms are bright and sunny. Accommodation consists of 3 bedrooms:1 double, 1 single & 1 twin room. There are duvets and pillows, but please bring your own bed linen (sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers and towels). There is a comfortable open plan sitting room with a dining area and kitchen. There is an outdoor eating area behind the chalet and a rotary drier for all those wet swimming costumes, after you've been for a dip in the beautiful deep blue sea. A £1 coin meter supplies electricity. To the Lighthouse is on a quiet family site and it's only a few minutes walk across the dunes to the sea. The Towans consists of 400 acres of dunes and are covered in flowers during the Spring and Summer months. In the evenings watch the ever changing colours as the sun sets over St Ives Bay. It's perfect.

Would not stay again

"We spent almost one week here in late July, encouraged by the other reviews here. We can only say that we were disappointed to find a below-average chalet that spoiled our time in Cornwall. If you're a dog lover, then this might well be for you, as it is nearer to a kennel in both size and cleanliness. Thank goodness there was a small hoover supplied, because we needed it to clean the chalet before we even unpacked. In fact my wife never actually unpacked, she just lived out of her suitcase the whole time, not wanting to put her clothes anywhere near the surfaces. One major issue was dog hair, which seemed to be everywhere. Another big factor was the smell of dog, again everywhere, including the bedding. (When we got home we realised just how much our duvet covers and pillow cases absolutely stank of wet dog.) But the biggest problem the girls had on arrival (my wife and our two daughters) was the spiders. Obviously this chalet had not been cleaned before we arrived, as we hoovered up eight quite large, long legged spiders that were scattered around the chalet. During the week we hoovered up many more, two or three a day on average. The girls were constantly on edge, waiting for the next one to appear. There were spider webs and dust webs all around, it really was like something out of a film. One of the sofas had a sheen to the arms that was just rubbed-in dirt and the floor mat was simply encrusted with dog hair and dirt.

Apart from the grubbiness of the place, there were numerous other issues which we felt were not up to standard. The main bedroom just about had room for a double bed, but little else. The door had no latch strike-plate, so would swing open as it wished. Same for the bathroom door, which incredibly had neither a latch or a bolt. We found two very smelly shirts on the back of the main bedroom door, which went straight into the bin. The grill in the cooker would work for a while, then cut out completely. The toilet flush was terrible, if you had anything other than a seagull sized poo to deal with then it would take three of four flushes to get rid of it, if you were lucky.

The whole place was tiny, which wouldn't have been so bad if it had been organised better, but it seemed everything had been done on a budget, including furniture. We did try and make contact with the owner numerous times before we posted this, but after a week we have heard nothing. Never again. Sorry.

Excellent little home from home

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this little treasure a few times and are heading back this spring bank! We love it ! Home from home and ideal for our little family which includes dogs! They have provided extras to help the 4 legged friends feel at home. My 6 year old loves it and calls it his little hideaway beach shack. It's really a home from home and the owners are really lovely. We hope to keep going for many years! Thank you and looking forward to our spring bank week.

Lovely Chalet near beautiful beaches

  • 4 of 5

A sweet quirky seaside themed chalet, ideal location next to beautiful beaches and a good local club house. We had a fabulous time there. The chalet amenities were good, the holiday location was perfect for us. Very friendly owners and would recommend to anyone wishing a good value property near a seaside location.

delightfully quirky snug and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We took our three foster children for a weeks holiday and this lovely little Chalet was delightful. It has a friendly quirky atmosphere and we all felt very much at home. Kitchen facilities are fine, its close to local Lidl store, lovely walks around the site and down to Hayle town. We found it easy to relax and enjoy ourselves and were ideally situated to enjoy the area. We visited the seal sanctuary - our two teenagers loved it and asked to go again - which was fabulous value as you can return as many times as you like on your week long ticket. . We also went to the Eden project.

We will most certainly be booking To the Lighthouse again. Great communication from the owners, and lovely comfy cabin.

Thank you for a smashing holiday.

Cosy beach retreat

  • 5 of 5

Me and my husband and dogs have stayed at this sweet chalet, we find our stays here very peaceful and every time we finish our holiday we find ourselves booking the next!

The chalet is fairly basic, but comfortable and ideal if you love to be in walking distance to the beach. There are plenty local sites to see nearby , amazing dog walks and also great surfing.

Moira and Sara always leave a welcome note and we feel they are on hand if we ever had a problem .

The chalet has everything we need , pots and pans, cutlery , fridge, small freezer , beds and a TV/dvd . We will definitely be returning . Thank you, we can't wait to be back again!

To the Lighthouse Chalet

  • 3 of 5

The chalet was very quaint and was adequately stocked with crockery, pans etc. The bedrooms were adequate and nicely presented although the lounge cum kitchen area would have been rather small for 5 people. However there were only 2 of us (plus pets)so it was fine and we were out every day for most of the day.

There was television and adequate seating but the settees were a little low for our fragile backs so a few additional cushions would have been very welcome!

All in all, we had a lovely stay and the owners were very helpful and on hand should any problems have arisen. We would certainly book the chalet should we decide to holiday again in Cornwall. Thank you Moira and Sara.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Maureen and glad you had a lovely time and would like to stay with us again. The extra cushions are a good idea, so we've put some more in. It's always good to hear from guests about how we can improve things, so your stay can be as comfortable as possible. Moira

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Well behaved pets are welcome. The dunes are a great place for dogs to run about and very safe too. Ours love it there. There are beach restrictions in operation across Cornwall in the Summer months. We have a map of dog friendly beaches in the chalet. Dogs are permitted on Mexico Towans which is to the right as you go down to the beach. WiFi is provided across the site, though there is a charge for this service. Please see below for details. Outside: There are sandy play areas on the site with swings and slides. There is also a sheltered grassy area behind the chalet, which makes a perfect private play area or just the place for dining al fresco. Parking is next to the chalet. The bus stop is just outside the site entrance with frequent buses into Hayle and Penzance. (Though it's a lovely, leisurely walk on footpaths through the fields into town.) There is a train station in Hayle for local and long distance trains. Godrevey lighthouse is at the other end of the beach - this is the lighthouse that inspired Virginia Woolfe's 'To the Lighthouse'. Please try to leave the chalet as clean and tidy as possible. Bed linen and towels are not provided. Rubbish collection on Thursdays. There is a £1.00 slot meter for Electricty. The chalet is a traditional style and size. It's smaller than a cottage, but bigger than a caravan.
