Updated: 31-Aug-2016
Riverside Cottage in Elterwater, Nr. Ambleside, Lake District, Cumbria - Perfectly situated by the side of Great Langdale Beck and close to the Village Green

This traditional cosy mid-terraced cottage in the centre of Elterwater, with original beams, slate floor, feature fire place and two double bedrooms is idyllically situated by the side of Great Langdale Beck. There are views across the river from the lounge and front bedroom, where the sound of the water will lull you to sleep. A small south facing garden has a picnic table for alfresco dining near the river, whilst a variety of walks, straight from the door, are suitable for all ages and abilities. The famous Britannia Inn, just across the village green, is ideally placed to relax after a day on the fells. Cottage guests have INCLUSIVE MEMBERSHIP OF THE NEARBY LANGDALE COUNTRY CLUB with its superb leisure facilities, and 10% discount off meals at Wainwrights Inn, just a short riverside walk away, There is a handy local country store about 10 minutes walk away, but more shops and facilities can be found in nearby Ambleside or Grasmere. There is a National Trust car park just across the road which is free to NT members. Regrettably we are unable to accept pets.

About the Owner

I am retired and live in Lancashire with my husband. We have walked in the Lake District for many years and never tire of exploring the area. We often walk over the hill to Grasmere or get the bus to Ambleside and walk home along the slopes of Loughrigg. We love staying in the cottage whenever possible and have tried to retain its cosy and welcoming feel.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Cottages can be pretty or warm or clean or bright or well-situated or well- equipped, but it's a rare joy to find all these qualities in one place.

very well appointed cottage

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Bridge Syke for a short break and found the place very well appointed. Everything was clean and spotless when we arrived and the cottage was in an ideal location for walking in every direction from Elterwater. We appreciated the little touches like up to date magazines (Hello/Vogue etc) in each bedroom, plenty of wood for the fire, lots of guidebooks with walks, information about local pubs and the membership of the Langdale Spa which we took advantage of for a swim. Thank you ever so much for a lovely holiday.

From the Owner

Elterwater is a picture postcard hamlet sitting in the Langdale Valley, in the very heart of the Lake District. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and the tourist villages of Ambleside and Grasmere are close by. There are great walks in every direction, although my favourite is over Lingmoor Fell into Little Langdale. For more adventurous explorers, the Langdale Pikes or Bowfell or the Scafells beckon.

Activity and Interests

Manchester airport is approximately 100 miles away and less than two hours drive. There are excellent motorway connections to the Lake District. There is also a train service to Windermere and then connecting buses or taxis.

Elterwater is 4 miles from Ambleside and about 2 miles from Grasmere. Bowness-on-Windermere is about 8 miles away. Coniston, Hawkshead, Keswick and all the major lakes are within easy driving distance.

Further Details:

Although rurally situated, there is a variety of excellent dining to suit all budgets and tastes. The Britannia Inn, Eltermere Inn and Wainwrights Inn are all on the doorstep. The adjacent Langdale Leisure Club also offers good dining choices. The nearby local store caters for most needs, whilst Ambleside offers a variety of shops, banks and a cinema.

From the Owner

The cottage sits by the side of Great Langdale Beck and there are walks from the door in every direction. The nearby Britannia Inn serves excellent food and a choice of real ales, whilst the Eltermere Inn and Wainwrights Inn offer great alternatives. The property is in a tranquil rural location, but guests will appreciate the ease of access to the rest of the District and even to the coast if you want to brave Wrynose and Hardknott Passes.
