Overview

About the property

Villa in Taormina 2 km from city center,2 bedroom,2 bathroome, parking and pool

The villa is a detached property, which assures you total privacy, in an original and ancient oil mill, completely restored with the traditional remains of the old productive assets. In its typical Mediterranean blooming garden there is an exclusive sunny pool surrounded by a shady zone with palms and olive trees, a very panoramic and breezy terrace, and a useful barbeque.

In the garden close to the main house there’s a comfortable annex with 3 beds and one bathroom with the entrance directly from the garden which brings the total number of sleeps to 6.

Because of the presence of a fireplace and air-conditioning (warm/cold), the house offers a pleasant stay also during the few cold weeks of the short Sicilian winter.

The most famous Taormina beaches are at about 2 KM as well the center of Taormina and Giardini-Naxos with their restaurants, theaters and pubs; moreover due to the proximity to the motorway exit it can also be a very convenient place to be used as base to visit the wonderful Sicilian attractions.

Abandoned property

  • 1 of 5

Yes the view on the sea side is fantastic! The lounge with the old oil mil is like a museum. The location to Taormina is well and the potential of this villa is high... But the pictures are old.Today the garden is left to the abandonment the vegetation invades the alleys and the approaches of the swimming pool. The furniture is outdated and out of use. The spider webs are everywhere, the camp beds! are uncomfortable not the same as in pictures. The electrical outlets hang from the walls (take care of children!). No television, bathroom not clean.... This villa should not be rent according its actual level.

Very disappointed.

Wonderful and Unique Villa

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our stay at this villa, and found it to be an excellent value. Since this is a 5 star review, let me begin with a couple of caveats.

This is not a luxurious villa. It is actually pretty rustic.

This is not a great choice if you are traveling with very young children.

The kitchen is adequately equipped for preparing simple meals only.

If these minor issues have not dissuaded you, you should definitely consider this villa.

The owner Francesco explained that the villa was built by his great grandfather in 1886. Later on, the frantoio, or olive press, was added on to the interior of the house. The villa is situated up on the hillside(steep road to access the property) overlooking the bay of Naxxos.

The villa and grounds definitely gave you a strong sense of place, and transported you back in time. You will absolutely feel that you are in Sicily while staying here.

The main area of the villa is very large, though also somewhat dominated by the olive press. There is a sort of sofabed/futon in the main room. The bedroom and bathroom in the main villla were comfortable, including, surprisingly, the smallish bed. There is a second structure behind the villa near the pool with 2 more beds and a bathroom with a shower. This room was comfortable enough for our 13 year old daughter and her grandmother to share. The pool was surrounded by olive and pear trees, with a nice mix of sunny exposure and shady areas.

We loved the feel of villa and grounds and enjoyed the pool and terrace with views of the bay below as well as Taormina and Castelmolla. We found it to be accesable to Taormina, Giardini Naxxos and Mazzaro, though parking is an issue in all of these areas. Maria Anne was very helpful in the planning process and Francesco helped us once we were on island. He even met us in town when we first arrived to guide us to the location of the villa, even though we didn't arrive until after 11:00 at night. He also assisted in making taxi reservations for us when that became necessary.

Overall the villa gave us an experience of authenticity, at a fantastic price, with very helpful and friendly owners. Thank you Maria Anne and Francesco for your hospitality!

Excellent Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay and Maria and Franco looked after us, if we had any problems we would would just txt them and they would try their hardest to fix the problem. The main thing I have to say (which wasn't a problem for us) is that we weren't taken to the villa advertised on the website. We were expecting a villa up the hill with a private pool. What we got was another fabulous villa on the hill overlooking the bay with no pool. As it was March we had no need for the pool so the lovely sea view more than made up for the confusion. We didn't bring this up with Maria at the time as we were very happy with it but if you have children and it is warm then I'd double check before you go and expect a pool. The villa was spotlessly clean and very large with a large kitchen and enough kitchen utensils to make a 3 course meal!

We couldn't fault the location as it was overlooking the bay of Isola Bella, we had a car but used the mountain lift up to the main street of Taormina where the main shops are, you can also use this lift to get to the Greek Theatre and the main square.

We would definitely return here and hope to do so in the near future.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words,we are happy you have spent a nice Holiday in Sicily and hope you have understood that we tried to help you.About the changing of the villa,we thought that this accomodation would have been more agreeable for you, as, because of exceptional weather conditions some days before,a landslide brought problems on the road to the villa. In this circumstances it would have been more complicated to reach Taormina center town, shops and other facilities, you would have been more secluded and we have considered not confortable this for you. We really hope to meet you again in Sicily.

Fantastic Honeymoon Stay

  • 4 of 5

Francesco and Maria were wonderful hosts and very friendly. They even left us presents as it was our honeymoon, which was really kind. The Villa is spacious but homely and had fantastic views of Taormina and Castel Molla. Facilities basic but usable and our only problem was that there was no hot water in the main villa and we had to use the annex for showers. Quite secluded but nice to be away from the bustle of town. A car is definitely needed to get around Sicily and to and from the Villa. The villa has so much character and history, and it was very different to anywhere we have ever stayed. We had a wonderful time and would recommend the villa to anyone seeking a rural Sicilian experience.

Spectacular views

  • 3 of 5

The house has a fantastic position looking towards Taormina and the sea. It was very clean. The main omission from the description is that the second bedroom is in the annexe in the garden - below the house and near to the pool. A nice light room, but totally unsuitable for a young family where parents and children would be very separated. The main part of the house is the old olive mill and the other bedroom and kitchen are quite small and dark.

When we visited the pool seemed to have a leak so was being continually topped up with cold water and was freezing!

There is no internet access as described in the listing - we were offered a dongle which was not compatible with ipad/phones/tablets

The owners have quite limited English but were kind and welcoming

and the area is fantastic - really convenient for Taormina and Etna - lots to see and visit and beaches very nearby. The terrace overlooking the valley is a great place to sit and eat. We really enjoyed our stay but felt that the facilities did not quite match up to the price charged.

Owner's Response: Dear Stephanie,we are happy for your review as it gives us the opportunity not disappoint our guests and improve our welcome. As regards the internet access we have provided for a new wifi gateway compatible with ipad, phones, tablets and now it works for the present guests. About the second bedroom, in the property description it is published that there is an annex with the entrance from the garden, close to the main house,a familly with children can choose to utilize the sofabed in the livingroom if they prefer to have children with them. The pool has not a leak, the water has to be added because of the evaporation due to the sun. Finally, a villa in a strategic position,as you could verify, with an exclusive garden and pool not shared with other people has a price. Aniway we really hope that you and your friends have had a nice holiday. Sincerely Francesco e Maria
