18th Century Wine Makers Cottage with Balcony situated near the Coast and Rivers

Updated: 10-Nov-2016
Cottage in Thezan des Corbieres, Nr. Lagrasse, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Situated In A Wine Making Village Only 16 Miles From A Wide Variety Of Beaches

Maison des Fleurs is an 18th century stone artisan's cottage lovingly restored with exposed beams, wood burning stove and sunny balcony where you can sit with a glass of wine and watch village life go by. With two bedrooms the house and facilities are ideal for 2/3 people who would like to experience true French village life. Thezan des Corbieres is a thriving village with all the amenities necessary for a good holiday, including a cafe/bar. Situated only 16 miles from the coast and a wide variety of beaches, there is also the opportunity to explore the Chateaux, Abbeys and Cathar ruins that abound in this region. Within half an hours drive are large towns with excellent restaurants, Theme Parks, Water Parks and even a Safari Park. The lakes, rivers and coast provide the opportunity to experience kayaking, rafting, windsurfing and diving. There are three rivers close to the gite, the nearest only 4 miles away, wild swimming is enjoyed at all the rivers. If that is not for you then how about cycling alongside the Canal du Midi? That is only a 20 minute drive away. There is something for everyone in this part of France and Maison des Fleurs is ideally located. Open all year round, this gite is very popular in Summer and Winter (still 20 degrees in December so perhaps not Winter as we know it) with radiators in every room and a wood burning stove the cottage is often used by house hunters in the cooler months - we offer special long term lets - just mail for further information.

We loved staying in a traditional village, not at all touristy, and the gite was as cute as a button. Our host, Diane, could not have been more helpful, ensuring we had everything we needed.. and more besides! Also offering lots of advice on where to visit both locally and further afield. We hope to be returning in the future and wouldn't hesitate in recommending the gite to anyone - can't fault it.

A little gem

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this lovely little cottage in Thezan. It was exactly as expected , full of character and antiquities. Diane made us so welcome and even loaned my partner a pair of her husbands trunks, as he forgot to pack his! Thankyou Peter !

It is worth hiring a car and discovering this beautiful part of France. Our first visit and certainly not our last.If you are looking for a real French experience in this lovely country then Maison des Fleurs is the perfect place as there is so much to see within 30 mins of the village. Would especially recommend a visit to La Grasse , a stunning Abbey and lots places to just sit and watch to world go by.

We were a party of 3 adults including a 79 year old. Maison des Fleurs is a small three storey town house in the historic core of the small village of Thezan des Corbieres. The bedrooms are at the top but accessed by shallow stairs which presented no problems for our party. It is a lovely house, tastefully restored (it is as nice as it looks in the photos). It has a quiet location in the (friendly - 'bonjour') village and there is parking nearby. It is centrally located for the Languedoc Rousillon region. From here we were able to easily reach the castles, beaches, towns, restaurants, vineyards etc that are praised in the guide books. We came by train to Narbonne (a nice town) from St Pancras and hired a car which worked well.

The best element was how friendly and attentive the Hosts were.

Any downsides? The cottage and Thezan des Corbieres are small (as are its shops) and the house has a balcony looking onto an alleyway but no garden. Go in any direction and you find restful, beautiful and/or interesting places (as well as practical things like supermarkets) within a short distance over good roads (even up in the hills - much less scary than Spain) but it all requires a car. Top tip: writing as the only driver in our party, include as many drivers as possible on your car rental agreement to allow flexibility (and sampling of the excellent local wines!).

We have not stopped singing the praises of Maison des Fleur and the area since we got back.

From the Owner

We first visited this area 14 years ago and have had a holiday home here ever since. This part of France has just everything, in our opinion. Outstanding, and varied scenery, wonderful, clean beaches and rivers and gorgeous restaurants and wine cellars. We also particularly like the numerous historical sites, in particular we love the Roman remains to be seen in towns like Narbonne and Nimes and the Cathar fortresses that are all within an easy driving distance of our gite. Everywhere you look there are reminders of the history of the region. In this part of France you are practically guaranteed excellent weather, even in December it can be 20 degrees. So if you want to relax on the beach, or by a river, and eat wonderful meals, or if you prefer a more active holiday cycling (alongside the Canal du Mdi perhaps) or hiking or exploring we have it all - and the climate to go with it.

From the Owner

We fell in love with Maison des Fleurs the minute we walked through the door - strange to most as the cottage was derelict and in a terrible state. It had, however, a lovely 'feel' to it. We have researched the history and found that it has always been a family home - at first it was a vineyard worker's house, the ground floor being used for the donkey or pony that would help the family till the vineyard. Later on the downstairs became a small shop where carts and bicycles were repaired, then it was converted again into a cottage where a family with 4 daughters lived. On the front door you can see initials carved by one of the owners who started their married life there - EH and PH. We spent two years restoring this little cottage using materials that were consistent with the age of the cottage and keeping as many features as possible, such as the beams and floor tiles, it was a real labour of love. Every day someone from the village would pop in to see our progress, usually uttering 'bon chance' when they saw what we were doing and always offering advice! Gradually we could see the cottage as it had been, a warm, family home with great character. We added our brocante (antique shop) and vide grenier (flea market) finds and voila (!) it was finished. Every single guest has remarked on the lovely ambiance of the cottage and the decor - all have found it a relaxing place to be with all the comforts of home. Everyone has also commented on how lovely it is to sit on the balcony and watch village life go by and how friendly people are in the village. Maybe that's because they feel they helped with the renovation by giving us advice!
