About Barbara or Chris Wood

We are Barbara and Chris Wood your hosts, although we bought in the 90's we only moved here in 2000 we were both born in London in the 40's and felt it was time to move to our sleepy village and started the massive renovation project which is still ongoing. Chris is a Coppersmith by trade and i worked in childcare for most of my working career. We are very happy in France and go back to England regularly to visit family and friends.

Barbara or Chris Wood purchased this house in 1990

Why Barbara or Chris Wood chose Somme

We hope you will appreciate our property as much as we do, although the village is quite rural we are in easy reach of three large towns Amiens, Abbeville and Arras

all withing a 40 minute drive.

We feel it has the best of both worlds although peaceful, we can get to Paris in 2 hrs or the beaches in an hour.

What makes this house unique

We both fell in love with this property at first site, all the features in the main house eg an old bread oven and inglenook fireplaces. The walls are of the traditional torshi (wood and packed straw) warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The converted barns were originally to house the cattle. There was no ceiling or stairs the top landing was the hayloft , so its been a labour of love for both of us, and we have never lost that enthusiasm.

It was very sweet with plenty of space for a family of five

  • 4 of 5

The home was really nice and typical of the region, plenty of rooms and beds, clean towels and linen and well stocked with utensils etc needed for cooking and preparing food, the little courtyard was smaller than expected but ended up being just fine for the children to play , we used the BBQ and outside table several enjoyable times, it was a pleasant quiet area but within good travelling distances for so many amazing places , the home could do with a deep clean for cobwebs and old travel brochures and things but was not dirty, and tall hubby an advanced warning of the small doorways upstairs xx we came home from a sweaty hot day in Paris to clean fresh bedding a week into holiday which was lovely , highly reccomend x

Full of charm, well worth a visit.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is lovely, full of character and quirkiness. The low doors upstairs caused much entertainment, as we are all over six feet tall, but it only added to the charm of the place. Clean and extremely well equipped. Welcome basket was much appreciated.

Instructions were clear and concise, plenty of ideas for day trips, along with maps to help us on our way.

It was clean, beds were comfortable, sofas were comfortable. There really isn't anything bad or even indifferent to say about this property.

Our party consisted of two teenage boys, myself and my husband...and Grandma came too! It's no mean feat to keep everyone happy, but we did. To be fair, good WiFi always helps, and guess what? The WiFi is excellent!

The only slight spanner in the works was the fact that the boulangerie was closed for refurbishment, but the little supermarket was just fine.

So, I highly recommend this property, you won't be disappointed.

Our stay in Candas

  • 5 of 5

Nice well-equipped Gite. It would have been nice to meet the owners but they were away. Welcome pack was welcome! We did have a little electrical problem but their key holders soon sorted it for us. Nice village - shame that the Boulangerie was closed for refurbishment but we were able to get baguettes at the Cocci market which was very handy. Nice area & well situated for British Cemetaries. We also saw the Gardens at Les Valloires & at Maizicourt which is smaller but better, we thought.

Very handy for Eurotunnel - approx 2 hours.

Beautiful homely accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely beautiful house in a great wee village. Fully stocked supermarket and a bakery for daily fresh bread just around the corner. We had come here to allow our 88 year old mother to visit the Somme area and the downstairs bedroom and bathroom was ideal for her. As soon as you walked in to the house you felt at home. Spotless and equipped with everything you could possibly need and more, all the stuff you would have in your own home and kitchen. Not like other rental properties that if they accommodate 8 there's 8 knives, 8 forks etc. Lovely welcome pack waiting for us too. Delightful outside eating area which the weather allowed us to use often. Great location to explore all the surrounding towns and beautiful countryside. I could genuinely not recommend the property more highly. Many thanks for a wonderful stay, Tony McCann and family.
