About the Owner

We moved to Cornwall in 2002 and have been letting Myrtle Cottage since 2003. Since our retirement from professional life we have established a small business making hand-crafted leather work which we sell through shows across the county. We keep a few chickens, grow our own veg and love the country life around the woods and creeks of the Helford. Now that we have the time we have decided to market our holiday cottage ourselves, offering a more personal service to customers at better prices.

A perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed at this cottage several times previously and once again it did not disappoint. The owners are most welcoming, providing little extras such as flowers in every room and 'goodies' on arrival. For a peaceful, restful break we would highly recommend a stay here. We travelled very little distance to find really good food. We particularly enjoyed the seafood at The Shipwright's Arms in Helford and South in Manaccan as well as a traditional Sunday lunch at the New Inn.

The most perfect Cornish retreat

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for the quintessential Cornish cottage look no further than Myrtle cottage. For the first time ever we decided to book somewhere for three weeks. We were a little apprehensive about staying in one place for that length of time, but we couldn't have chosen better. Myrtle cottage was idyllic and in a perfect location for exploring the Lizard and surrounding coasts. This traditional cottage is immaculately clean, cosy, very comfortable, and well-equipped.

Barbara and Maurice are the perfect hosts, very welcoming, warm and friendly, and full of good advice if you need it for getting the most out of your stay.

There were fresh flowers in every room when we arrived, and these were replenished each week. Barbara makes the most amazing cakes, and gave us not one but three during our three week stay! As well as fresh eggs from their chickens, and essential supplies such as milk, tea and coffee, washing up liquid etc.

I don't think the photos on the website quite do justice to the beauty of the cottage garden, which is a perfect place to relax in the evening. It is so peaceful and quiet.

Thanks so much, Barbara and Maurice. We loved it and hope to come back some day soon.

Fantastic!! Would highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

This awesome picturesque cottage, is the best place we have stayed in so far in our many years of going to our beloved Cornwall! It is like a second home for us, not only with its ideal setting, wonderful views, and beautiful garden, it also boasts everything you need for a wonderful stay away from home. Myrtle Cottage is clean, comfortable, homely, cosy, with all the facilities you need and want. This is topped off by the owners, Mo and Barbara are very welcoming warm people, and make you feel at home, its like staying with family ;o) This was our second visit with our two young children and we very much hope to be back again next year too. We would recommend a visit to the neighbouring coves, Kynance Cove and Church Cove, they are beautiful places, also the best place for a spot of lunch or a cream tea is found in Porthleven's Nauti But Ice, all round a really wonderful place to be ;o).

Superb Holiday Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were absolutely delighted with this cottage. It is really very spacious for a Cornish cottage - there was plenty of room for my husband and me with our three children (one in a cot in the master bedroom). The ceilings are low and so my husband had to stoop in places, but that is as you would expect in a cottage. We were so pleased to find it so lovely and clean when we arrived, in contrast to previous, more disappointing, holiday rentals. It is well-equipped, peaceful, well-appointed and the beds are comfortable. The owners are friendly, welcoming and informative and there was a tasty welcome basket, as well as fresh flower arrangements, upon arrival. The owners live next door, but are extremely unobtrusive. Our only regret is that there will not be room here for all five of us once our youngest is out of a cot.

Do not hesitate to book. What more can I say!

Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is just a hidden gem, I came across it on the internet and found the most wonderful cottage you could imagine. The owners were such nice and genuine people you could wish to meet, helpful and informative about the area. This cottage is ideal for all ages from people who just want to relax to those who want to explore the area.

The welcome pack we got was out of this world with cake, eggs, milk and strawberries . We couldn't have picked a better place to visit, and Yes we will be back.

real cornish holiday

  • 5 of 5

the thatched cottage was quaint, charming and user friendly. there was plenty of room and all amenities were modern.

the cottage had its own delightful garden with an arbour to sit under and looked out over fields so peaceful.

the local area is full of small villages, coves and riverside walks, however the cottage is down a narrow country lanes which could make walking after dark hazardous.

when we arrived there was tea milk and coffee waiting for us together with a delicious home made chocolate cake and eggs from the owners chickens,

the owners lived next door which for us made the holiday they were welcomimg, friendly, helpful but not intrusive full of local advice from shopping to restaurants.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a nice review. As we don't have street lighting a torch is handy. You can see wonderful starry nights though.

From the Owner

We were looking for a peaceful, rural lifestyle near to family and the sea. The Helford River is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cornwall.

Activity and Interests

St Anthony beach is about a mile from the cottage, Helford River beaches are closer and an easy walk. Other Lizard beaches and coves are a short drive.

Newquay airport is the closest about 1.25 hours drive.

Use of a car is essential here although there is a rural bus service.

Myrtle is midway between Helford and Manaccan about .5 mile walk to either village. Helston is about 10 miles distant.

Further Details:

The Helford River is designated a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) with sessile oak woodland, wading birds, estuarine shellfish and many walks.

There are good local pubs, restaurants and local shops in the villages surrounding Manaccan. Supermarkets, banks and other facilities are located in Helston. There is a foot ferry at Helford giving access to the sub tropical gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan with its maze.

From the Owner

There are many beautiful walks accessible from the cottage through National Trust woodland, along the coastal path, with coves and beaches where each season brings its own gems. The best spring flowers in May, mackerel in early summer, shrimping in August, wild mushrooms and shellfish for the picking in the autumn and the wild sea in winter. The local foot ferry drops you off at the sub-tropical gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan and there are plenty of opportunities to take to the water. Both St Anthony and Helford have sailing, kayaking and fishing boats for hire.
