Overview

About the property

Cosy 1-bed traditional Dales cottage with all mod cons, tranquil location, home from home.

Westburn Cottage is an end-terrace cottage located in a quiet non-drive through hamlet called Newbiggin in Bishopdale. Originally a 17th century barn, the cottage has been converted into a cosy property with all the mod-cons. And as it's our 2nd home it's also been done to a very high standard. There is off-road parking at the front of the property. At the rear there is a gravelled area with tables & chairs.

About Phil Brewster

Despite this not being our primary residence, my partner & I love the Dales, and escape here as often as work allows. But as we can't be here all the time we don't see why others shouldn't enjoy the use of such a lovely property, in such a gorgeous setting. As it's our 2nd home, it's been furnished to a high standard with all mod-cons. We've been very lucky that everyone who's been to stay has loved it. So much so that we get people coming back year after year (one couple like it so much they've been 6 times and have already booked a break for next year). We aim to make your stay as enjoyable and as hassle-free as possible. And hope that at the end of your stay you'll feel like you don't want to leave.

Why Phil Brewster chose Yorkshire Dales

The barn itself is right at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so it's a perfect base to explore & visit the surrounding countryside. Anyone who's ever watched James Herriot's 'All Creatures Great & Small' will know that the local scenery is stunning. The walking is fantastic too, but if the weather's not great there are plenty of places to visit including castles, museums, steam railways etc. And if eating out is your thing there are plenty of pubs, tea-shops, restaurants & cafes - all of which serve food to a high standard. Most of all, the people are really friendly - despite the (undeserved) reputation of Yorkshire folk being monosyllabic!

What makes this barn unique

We feel it's got everything you could ask for. Access from the front door to the Dales, but close enough to towns and villages when you need them. The barn has full electric central heating & a multi-fuel stove for when you want that warm, cosy log-fire atmosphere. One other selling point - unlike many other cottages we DON'T charge extra for coal/wood in Winter (in some cases up to £20 extra a week), so you won't have to worry about any extra hidden costs.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: The property is non-smoking and we don't accept pets (Sorry - we like them, but some people have allergies). We also feel the property is unlikely to be suitable for very small children and/or the very elderly due to the issue of stairs & stone steps leading up to the front door. Outside: At the rear of the property there is a gravelled seating area which has a table and six chairs. This is ideal for eating out in good weather or sitting outside for an evening drink. It also affords lovely views of the surrounding dale & wildlife. Utility Room: In the downstairs lobby there is a washing machine/dryer should you need to wash any clothing. Liqui-tabs are also provided free of charge. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is fully cleaned for each new guest. All bed linen is fresh & provided free-of-charge. A hand towel is also provided for the bathroom and a tea towel for the kitchen. Extra towels are available for hire at a cost of £6 per person per week. Other: The downstairs lobby has a tiled floor which allows you to come in at the rear of the property if you have muddy boots.

A lovely cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

The is a lovely cottage in a great location, with an amazing view over Bishopdale with great access to the rest of the Dales. The cottage was very clean and tidy when we arrived and had plenty of crockery etc and helpful extras such coffee and tea bags. The owners had supplied us with good information about the cottage and the surrounding area. A great local pub within a few minutes walk which has great food with good portions a friendly landlord and staff. The locals in both the pub and village was also really friendly. If you want a restful peaceful holiday then this is the place for you. I would recommend it and we hope to return in the future

Easter Break

  • 5 of 5

Just stayed at Westburn Cottage for our Easter Break and what can I say but WOW !!! The quality and standard of the cottage is fantastic and I have never stayed anywhere so well equipped, we like to eat in as much as out when away and the kitchen has everything and more that you could possibly need.

From booking to returning the communication from the cottage owner was again second to none, he provided in depth detail about the cottage, the local area and where to eat, shop and visit.

Eating out we tried the Saffron Indian in Leyburn and the Streethead Inn which is a short walk from the cottage. Both were great and the portion sizes at the Streethead are not for the faint hearted !!!

Out and About there are so many beautiful and interesting places to visit. We only scratched the surface seeing the Waterfalls at Aysgarth and Hardrow, Richmond Castle and Fountains Abbey is a full day for anyone to enjoy.

The only downside to our break is that we wish we were there for longer.

We would certainly recommend to our friends and family and am sure we will return to Westburn Cottage.
