Beautifully Converted Barn With Stunning Views

Overview

Property

Updated: 23-Nov-2016
Cosy 1-bed traditional Dales cottage with all mod cons, tranquil location, home from home.

Westburn Cottage is an end-terrace cottage located in a quiet non-drive through hamlet called Newbiggin in Bishopdale. Originally a 17th century barn, the cottage has been converted into a cosy property with all the mod-cons. And as it's our 2nd home it's also been done to a very high standard. There is off-road parking at the front of the property. At the rear there is a gravelled area with tables & chairs.

About the Owner

Despite this not being our primary residence, my partner & I love the Dales, and escape here as often as work allows. But as we can't be here all the time we don't see why others shouldn't enjoy the use of such a lovely property, in such a gorgeous setting. As it's our 2nd home, it's been furnished to a high standard with all mod-cons. We've been very lucky that everyone who's been to stay has loved it. So much so that we get people coming back year after year (one couple like it so much they've been 6 times and have already booked a break for next year). We aim to make your stay as enjoyable and as hassle-free as possible. And hope that at the end of your stay you'll feel like you don't want to leave.

Cosy cottage with beautiful views.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at the cottage which was beautifully clean and much larger than it appears in the photos. The sofa was comfy and I'm really missing the massive luxurious bed. All the extra bits and pieces such as cling film and foil were provided.

We walked every day both from the village itself or from slightly further afield. The drive into Wharfedale is stunning and there are lovely walks from villlage to village. We were lucky enough to see a kingfisher on the River Wharfe.

Hawes and Leyburn both have a variety of shops selling local produce. The village of West Burton which is close by has a small shop and butchers for essentials. Perfect!

Just Perfect

  • 5 of 5

I am delighted to review this cottage following my stay at the end of October 2016. The location is very quiet but central enough to allow you to explore the many attractions of the Yorkshire Dales. The cottage was spotless, with all mod cons and kitchen supplies provided. The shower room was particularly clean and we loved the under floor heating. The shower itself was powerful and hot. The super king size bed has a luxurious memory foam mattress and a cosy duck and feather down duvet. We were never cold as all rooms have radiators but we loved to use the log burning stove and made use of the free logs and coal provided. The owner provided excellent documentation on the cottage as well as guides on the surrounding area. We particularly loved the scenery and spent half of the week photographing all of the lovely waterfalls in the area. Could the cottage be improved? It depends on how picky you are - small freezer compartment may upset some people and steps up to the property and downstairs to the bathroom may affect the less able. Oh, and bring some hangers as only 4 were provided. I would definitely recommend this property and would re-book again.

I'm sure the extra bits of info/advice you've provided will come in handy - it's good for people to see how other guests view it. And I'll make sure to add some more coat hangers too! :-) Hope to hear from you again soon. Kind regards - Phil

Comfortable with first class facilities

  • 4 of 5

Being at the end of a one mile cul-de-sac the amount of traffic in a day is neglible-very peaceful.

I found the village a good centre for bike rides in all directions. On rest days I had a ride on the Wensleydale Railway and a visit to Fountains Abbey.

I certainly look to make a repeat booking next year.

Lovely cottage with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfect for a romantic break for a couple. Beautiful scenery, peace and quiet, lovely cottage. It has good amenities, dishwasher, washing machine, all the normal kitchen stuff, decent shower, big bed, WiFi and the best view I've had out of a living room window. TV channels are pretty limited but there is a good selection of DVDs and books for evenings in and a pub within walking distance that does standard pub food in generous portions and has a reasonable vegetarian selection. Wensleydale is beautiful and great if you like walking , the Wensleydale creamery is worth a visit to taste a selection of the local cheeses and there are some good waterfalls, castles and priories to visit too. Leyburn is a town not far away that is a good place to do some shopping, Campbell's of leyburn is a good little supermarket especially if you want a good range of jam and chutney and there is also a co-op if you prefer.

Lovely cottage in great location

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage in a great location for exploring the dales. The cottage is tastefully decorated with original features and the owners have thought of everything you could possibly need. The log fire and fabulous views made for cosy evenings but the pub up the road also offers a friendly welcome and good food if you prefer. Lots of great walks straight from the cottage to stunning waterfalls and picturesque villages. We stayed 3 nights but could have stayed longer. An ideal place to get away from it all and relax and we'll definitely return!

Ideal country cottage with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here for 3 nights . Perfect location for peace & quiet , country walks with stunning scenery & waterfalls galore ! Cottage was cozy & welcoming with plenty of wood & kindling for the wood burner . Heaters backed up the open fire so all rooms were comfortably heated . Lovely fitted kitchen with every possible appliance you could need . A lovely friendly pub on the doorstep , well a short walk away , serving great food & plenty of alternative pubs a few miles away . Would definitely recommend this cottage & would love to come back again soon . So much more to do & see in the area ! Only down side didn't have enough time !

Location

From the Owner

The barn itself is right at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, so it's a perfect base to explore & visit the surrounding countryside. Anyone who's ever watched James Herriot's 'All Creatures Great & Small' will know that the local scenery is stunning. The walking is fantastic too, but if the weather's not great there are plenty of places to visit including castles, museums, steam railways etc. And if eating out is your thing there are plenty of pubs, tea-shops, restaurants & cafes - all of which serve food to a high standard. Most of all, the people are really friendly - despite the (undeserved) reputation of Yorkshire folk being monosyllabic!

Facilities

From the Owner

We feel it's got everything you could ask for. Access from the front door to the Dales, but close enough to towns and villages when you need them. The barn has full electric central heating & a multi-fuel stove for when you want that warm, cosy log-fire atmosphere. One other selling point - unlike many other cottages we DON'T charge extra for coal/wood in Winter (in some cases up to £20 extra a week), so you won't have to worry about any extra hidden costs.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The property is non-smoking and we don't accept pets (Sorry - we like them, but some people have allergies). We also feel the property is unlikely to be suitable for very small children and/or the very elderly due to the issue of stairs & stone steps leading up to the front door. Outside: At the rear of the property there is a gravelled seating area which has a table and six chairs. This is ideal for eating out in good weather or sitting outside for an evening drink. It also affords lovely views of the surrounding dale & wildlife. Utility Room: In the downstairs lobby there is a washing machine/dryer should you need to wash any clothing. Liqui-tabs are also provided free of charge. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is fully cleaned for each new guest. All bed linen is fresh & provided free-of-charge. A hand towel is also provided for the bathroom and a tea towel for the kitchen. Extra towels are available for hire at a cost of £6 per person per week. Other: The downstairs lobby has a tiled floor which allows you to come in at the rear of the property if you have muddy boots.
