Small manor house or a gite with tower. Heated pool, idyllic setting - Maison de la Tour

Updated: 20-Jul-2016
Maison de la Tour 3 bedrooms sleeps 6, Maison du Maitre, 5 bedrooms sleeps 11,

La Grange Terrou is a small domain situated just outside the village of St Germain de Confolens with its medieval castle and river walks, tucked away in the heart of the beautiful Charente countryside. Our two holiday homes are located on the main courtyard of the property and back onto beautiful gardens and the shared 10 x 5m heated pool. The two houses are designed and equipped to feel like home from home and have been fully moderised in the last few years while also retaining their French charm. The houses overlook the main garden area and the pool but each has its own private area so can be rented individually or together (discounts are available for multiple lets or longer than a week, please ask). The pool is fenced for security reasons and has terracing around it with sun loungers plus a gazebo giving shade for those who prefer it. A path from the garden leads to our private woodland which is yours to explore. There is also is playground area for children with swings, badminton net and football net. Guests are also welcome to roam around our pastures and meet our horses and dogs.

Details for holiday home Maison de la Tour, 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6, 2 Bathrooms, 1 Separate WC

Maison de la Tour backs onto the main courtyard of the property but has its own entrance area and terrace to the front and is hence quite private. Downstairs there is a large lounge /dining area with French doors leading to the terrace. There is internet access and UK and French TV provided by satellite. A small hall area houses a washing machine and leads to the kitchen with cooker, hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave etc. Further along the hall is bedroom one with kingsize bed and ensuite shower room. A door gives access to the garden.

On the first floor is the second, triple aspect bedroom with double bed and fabulous views over the property. The main bathroom with a huge walk in shower is also on this floor. A door leads to a small balcony and outdoor stairs directly to the garden. Up again to the turret room with bunkbeds; the favourite for children.

About the Owner

After spending 20 years in marketing, Karen moved to France in 2010 in order to spend more time indulging her two passions; horses and gardening

However, before the relaxation came the hard work as the property needed total renovation

Of course the first priority was to build the stables and put in a training arena for the horses.

Karen was joined by Robert in 2014 and together they have been developing the third house on the site, Maison de la Chasse which is also now available.

A truly lovely gîte.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a quiet relaxing stay in nice accommodation where I could do some cycling and the family could chill by the pool.

La Grange Terrou, situated a short distance away from the town of Confolens in lovely quiet countryside, met and exceeded these requirements. Robert and Karen are very welcoming hosts and they could not do enough to make our stay a very enjoyable one and work very hard to improve what is already a lovely gîte.

The gîte itself has two good sized double bedrooms, one with ensuite - the first floor room is especially lovely - with a third floor bunk room perfect for the kids. There is a fully equipped kitchen and relaxing lounge/dining area. The bathrooms, equipped with showers, are clean and modern.

There are nice grounds and bbq area but special mention should be given to the lovely pool and gazebo which is the perfect place to chill with a glass of wine while the sun goes down!

And the cycling? Very quiet roads give plenty of options to test yourself or blow away the cobwebs after perhaps too much French vino....

PS the dogs are really lovely!

Karen and Robert were wonderful hosts. Non intrusive but there. Lovely peaceful setting. Beautiful pool and gazebo. Lovely grounds. Well equipped gite. Kids loved it. They miss Sam the dog.

Home from home.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this lovely Gite for a week during the summer holidays. It was chosen for the price, the location (sunshine state) and the swimming pool (an easy holiday if you have children). Despite a fraught car journey from the airport, not unlike the wacky races, on arrival our stress melted away. Beautiful surroundings, extremely helpful hosts and a house full of character. My children (8 and 12) were delighted to find themselves sleeping in a 'turret' with their own staircase. The owners had thought of everything and then some: board games, books, fantastic size bathrooms, sharp knives in the kitchen (normally my husbands biggest bug-bear), pool equipment AND there was no damp (always a problem with an asthma sufferer). We have enjoyed a few holidays in Gites in France but this one was outstanding.

Could not have been better

  • 5 of 5

La Grange Terrou is just superb, no pictures could quite do it justice.

Set in rolling countryside, the rural surroundings are beautiful but you are just 10 minutes away from the charming St Germain and Confolens.

It is a great location to either chill out or explore the Charente and Dordogne regions.

We spent two weeks here in August 2013 and found it charming and rustic on the outside but very up to date, comfortable and clean on the inside.

It really was a home from home and having stayed in many other Gites, the feeling that you were in a very high standard of accommodation was noticeable.

The grounds are beautiful and the pool is fantastic - we spent most of our time in or around it.

Karen and Des also have some gorgeous dogs , one of whom just wanted you to throw a ball for him all the time- he was adorable and the game of 'catch' in itself relaxing!

Karen saved us when we arrived too late for the French shops by loaning us the essentials (wine, beer and food too!) and was so helpful and friendly- always on hand if you need anything but happy to leave you to it the rest of the time.

Highly recommend a stay here- you will come back a different person- fully relaxed.

Best Gite

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in a number of Gites over the last ten years and this is by far the best one we have ever stayed at. The property is well equipped, clean and well maintained. Well worth 5 stars. We would definitely stay here again and are already thinking about next year!

Best Holiday Ever!

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic property in a beautiful setting. Whilst enjoying the peace and quiet and the rural ambience of this property, you are minutes away from the town of Confolens. My husband, teenage daughter and I were more than pleasantly surprised on our arrival at this property and its location and the pictures on the website did not do the property justice, it was far better than we had anticipated. The property was clean, the rooms were so spacious and well laid out with a fantastic kitchen and with all the facilities that you would require, together with two fantastic walk in showers. The owners Des and Karen were so welcoming and made us feel so much at ease, they continually ensured that we were comfortable. There is also a fantastic pool which we had exclusive use of every day and it was so well maintained surrounded by beautiful gardens. My teenage daughter had the best holiday of her life spending time with the three horses and two beautiful dogs that are at the property. There is a riding stable in the nearby village of Jallais. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property to friends and family, as it is certainly one of the best holidays we have had in France and we have been going there for the last 13 years. We visited many surrounding areas and would recommend a visit to Montemart (an absolutely idyllic little village with lovely local restaurant) the Blond Mountains. Also the chateau at La Rochefoucauld, (approx 45 mins drive) where the family still live. We also visted the martyred village of Oradour sur Glane and this is well worth a visit. We also took a trip on the velorail which again was a great family fun experience for us. The town of Confolens is a 5 minute drive from the property and has a good range of supermarkets and shops for everything that you would require. There is also a nice restaurant right on the square and a local market is held weekly and many other events are often going on in the square throughout the summer period. We had the opportunity to attend the accordion festival at Les Terps which was a fantastic experience with the whole village taking part and we had a thoroughly memorable day. We are trying to think of things which we disliked but cannot and we will certainly visit this property and area again, as it has so much to offer.

From the Owner

The location of the property is perfect, in a rural setting but still only 4km from local shops and facilities in Confolens, our main town. There was plenty of room for the horses and plenty of scope to develop the gardens. And of course the houses themselves, the main house which is of a classic style, Maison de la Tour with its quirky layout and tower and Maison de la Chasse which is a country farmhouse.
