La Grange Terrou is a small domain situated just outside the village of St Germain de Confolens with its medieval castle and river walks, tucked away in the heart of the beautiful Charente countryside. Our two holiday homes are located on the main courtyard of the property and back onto beautiful gardens and the shared 10 x 5m heated pool. The two houses are designed and equipped to feel like home from home and have been fully moderised in the last few years while also retaining their French charm. The houses overlook the main garden area and the pool but each has its own private area so can be rented individually or together (discounts are available for multiple lets or longer than a week, please ask). The pool is fenced for security reasons and has terracing around it with sun loungers plus a gazebo giving shade for those who prefer it. A path from the garden leads to our private woodland which is yours to explore. There is also is playground area for children with swings, badminton net and football net. Guests are also welcome to roam around our pastures and meet our horses and dogs.

La Maison du Maitre is the original owners home. It is a typical Charentaise style; spacious with high ceilings and wooden or tiled floors. Downstairs is a large lounge with TV/DVD, dining room (can seat up to 16) and large kitchen with 2nd TV/DVD. The kitchen is very well equipped with range cooker, fridge/freezer, drinks fridge, dishwasher etc. The kitchen leads to a small vestibule with downstairs toilet and cloakroom. There is also a separate laundry room with washing machine. All downstairs rooms have doors leading directly to the terrace which surrounds the rear of the house. On the terrace are tables and chairs for outdoor dining and a gas BBQ. The terraces overlook the main garden to the front and the pool to the side.

Upstairs there are two ensuite bedrooms with king-size beds, one twin room, one with a single bed and a bunk bed and one double room, sharing the family bathroom.

About the Owner

After spending 20 years in marketing, Karen moved to France in 2010 in order to spend more time indulging her two passions; horses and gardening

However, before the relaxation came the hard work as the property needed total renovation

Of course the first priority was to build the stables and put in a training arena for the horses.

Karen was joined by Robert in 2014 and together they have been developing the third house on the site, Maison de la Chasse which is also now available.

Family holiday

We had a family party of 10. The house is very large and cool in the summer. Bedrooms are all sizeable. Two out of three bathrooms are modern with the other ready to be updated. Two TV's with UK programs and loads of DVD's, music CD's and a great variety of books. There's lots of seating and several dining areas indoors and out. There's a good size BBQ. Lots of glasses, cutlery, etc. Good grounds to play in and safe for children. The owners have three extremely playful, friendly dogs. Our kids loved them all and spent many hours with them.

Nice pool area with sun loungers although pool not heated summer 2014. Solar energy is apparently being installed ready for next season and other modernisation projects ongoing. A very pleasant, quiet, enjoyable location. Nothing seemed too much for our hosts to make things comfortable and ready for our arrival. A very enjoyable family get-together.

From the Owner

The location of the property is perfect, in a rural setting but still only 4km from local shops and facilities in Confolens, our main town. There was plenty of room for the horses and plenty of scope to develop the gardens. And of course the houses themselves, the main house which is of a classic style, Maison de la Tour with its quirky layout and tower and Maison de la Chasse which is a country farmhouse.

Ryan Air fly from Stansted, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford, Bristol and East Midlands and often have bargain flights available. Ask us about organising a fully catered short break for you and your friends.


St Germain de Confolens is our local village with medieval castle and river walks. Lessac is a 2 minute drive and has a restaurant and bar. Esse is a 2 minute drive and boasts a micro brewery with bar.

Confolens (4km) is the nearest town with bars, restaurants, banks and supermarkets.

Further Details:

There are many beautiful places to vist in the Charente region. Canoeing is available locally on the river Vienne. There are several local activity parks as well as Futuroscope a bit further afield. Cassiomagnus is one of the best preserved roman ruins /baths. Oradour sur Glane is the site of a famous martyred village which has been preserved since the end of WWII to commemorate the villagers murdered there. There are many castles to visit including pour own medieval ruins in St Germain which hosts falconery displays each week, Also in our village some of the local crafts people have opened a boutique where they display and sell the goods they produce. Our village also has a wine cellar where local wines can be purchased. Each week in summer months there a festivals and markets taking place in local town sand villages where you can get a taste for rural French life place.

Changeover days are Saturdays. Arrivals after 4pm Saturday and houses to be vacated by 10am Saturday morning.

Notes on prices:
Prices include bedlinen and towels but not pool towels. Linen will be changed weekly.
Out of season electricity will be charged additionally. Logs are available for the wood burner for 25 euros per week

  • Notes on accommodation: Both houses have woodburners and La Maison du Maitre also has oiled fired central heating. There is a communal play area for children with a swing and badminton net. Outside: The property sits in about 1 acre of gardens with 10 acres of pasture and 20 acres of woodland. There is plenty of space for children to play and there are paths through the woods so you can take a stroll without leaving the property. There is a large shared pool 10m x 5m with solar heating and night cover which has easy access stairs to one end. A gazebo provides shade if needed. The owners live on site and are always available if neeed
