Cottage, pool exclusive to guests, stone built, renovated, quiet, edge of forest

Updated: 05-Aug-2016
The Old Bakery Cottage, Cabanes, St Beauzile, Le Tarn, Midi-Pyrenees. - Suit romantic couples, walkers, cyclists, astronomers, ornithologists, writers seeking inspiration.

The detached stone built and beautifully renovated cottage is in the grounds of and set away from the owners' house. It offers an outside terrace under a pergola with an outdoor dining table and chairs with views down the extensive garden, to the pool, the Gaillac countryside beyond, and in the far distance on a good day, the Pyrenees. It is located in a hamlet on the edge of the old oak Gresigne Forest and 20 minutes from Cordes sur Ciel, the nearest town. A car is essential. The area offers both peace and solitude and a centre for exploration of the surrounding places of interest, Albi with its Toulouse Lautrec Museum, Cordes, a medieval bastide with its World Heritage status, and Toulouse as a bustling university city with fine shops and pedestrianised streets and open air cafés. Good walking country with trails through the forest and the surrounding vineyards. Excellent biking for the very fit. Secure under cover storage for bikes (own key) and bike washing facilities are available. The clean fresh air as evidenced by the lichen growing on the trees in the garden (showing the absence of pollution) is suitable to those who bring their star gazing telescopes for spectacular views of the night sky! The property has a satellite dish to receive the major Uk broadcast TV channels and some of the more important radio stations such as Radio 4. The owners adjacent house means they are close by to ensure your questions are answered and any problems resolved (contrast those who use an agent where experience suggests that there is so often a communication failure which is at the guests' expense !!)

About the Owner

Liz and Graham are pleased to invite you to their holiday cottage in the garden of their retirement home in Tarn, Midi-Pyrenees, France.

We moved to this part of France in 2013 and found a secluded rural house and holiday cottage on the edge of the Gresigne Forest, 1200 feet above sea level with views across rural Tarn. It is very much a comfortable holiday retreat in 'France profonde', which we hope will give you a relaxing break amongst the Gaillac vineyards.

Fantastic property in an amazing location,Graham &Liz were excellent hosts lovely starter pack including wine on arrival. Hosts were very knowlegeable about the area and sights to see.

Stunning area quiet, amazing night skies, cottage was amazing. First holiday we have had where we didn't want to go home.

Lovely to have use of the swimming pool.

Plenty of medieval towns to visit for lunch or dinner.

We will definitely be going back again.

Wonderful gite in peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

Having just returned from a fortnight in The Old Bakery, we can thoroughly recommend this gite to anyone who loves rural France and wants to unwind.

Although remote, many interesting towns and villages are easily accessible in all directions and the forest is on the doorstep if walking and cycling is your 'thing'. We thoroughly enjoyed Penne, Cordes, Puycelsi and, of course, Albi with its magnificent cathedral. St Antonin and Gaillac offer good food shopping and the former's Sunday morning market is a 'must'. The gite itself is very well equipped and comfortable with the added luxury of a superb pool. Liz and Graham are excellent hosts. We particularly appreciated their welcome 'goodies' and the change of linen for our second week.

Getting away from it all

  • 4 of 5

The Old Bakery is the perfect place to get away from it all, without feeling isolated. On the edge of a beautiful forest which offers numerous walks and close to many charming hilltop villages, the cottage is spacious and extremely well-equipped. Small things like pool towels and cleaning products made a big difference, as did Liz and Graham's kind offer to do some shopping prior to our arrival. The garden is perfect for relaxing and bird watching, and the cool, clean pool provides the opportunity for exercise.

If you are looking for disco music, TV, frantic activity and noise of any kind (other than birdsong), please stay away. This is the place to enjoy a relaxing holiday in la France profonde.

Liz and Graham are friendly hosts who respect their guests' privacy, and we were extremely grateful when they "rescued" us after we got lost on one of our longer walks!

We had a lovely time and thank Liz and Graham for their hospitality.

Peaceful and extremely pleasant

  • 5 of 5

The Old Bakery was the very welcome destination after a long, but, pleasant journey (four adults).

The gite is well-equipped and Liz and Graham provide a welcome pack plus there are cleaning materials and equipment. There is a cosy living room with a couple of settees, a sizeable dining area with a large table and plenty of seating inc a small sofa and the two bedrooms are spacious. The barn is a boon for parking the car out of the sun

Outside there are plenty of opportunities to sit and enjoy the garden and the wildlife. The table under the pergola is particularly pleasant, perfumed by the lavender and other plants which are a constant hive of activity with bees and butterflies. For shade, the stone seat under the tree provides another peaceful retreat. The property also has a variety of fruit trees. Birdsong all day, plus wood pigeon, cockerels, geese, birds of prey soaring and the sight of darting, swooping swallows as they skim the pool add to the pleasure.

The pool is lovely. It is large, clean and totally refreshing with a good sized area for relaxation.

Situated on the edge of the forest, there are many quiet roads for walking and there are always local people and farmers working away in the surrounding woodland and fields who appreciate a friendly wave.

Because of the location, it was dark enough on good nights for us to use our telescope and were delighted to have a fine view of Saturn and its rings. Excellent for star-gazing!

Cabanes is a good choice for people who appreciate a quiet location as a base. A car is essential as it is some distance to the nearest towns. The Sunday market at St Antonin is a "must do" - it is very lively and the food is as fresh as you will find. There are many towns of interest within relatively easy reach. Penne, for example, is stunning with its towering castle and lovely little streets and square.

Liz and Graham are accommodating and helpful owners who live on site and are happy to be approached if anything is required. It was our pleasure to stay at the Old Bakery. Thank you.

The Old Bakery

  • 5 of 5

We spent a very happy and comfortable fortnight in The Old Bakery, which (unusually) was very well equipped and well thought out. The attention to detail is really what made this special for us. It was immaculate when we arrived, with the bonus of a "welcome pack" waiting for us. The setting is delightful and the pool was super. This is a very quiet part of La France Profonde and it suited us. We didn't mind that the nearest shop was 20 minutes away. There is no TV but that wasn't really a problem while we were there, even though it was the World Cup - WiFi was very useful! The area is stunning and our hosts very welcoming and obliging. We would certainly seriously consider going back.

A peaceful, relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

This spacious property has great facilities and is well presented throughout.

Set in a lovely rural location in an interesting area, this holiday cottage offers a wide variety of options and a really relaxing home base.

Although the cottage is in close proximity to the owners house you always feel like you have your own space - but the owners are available should you need help. In our case Liz and Graham went out of their way to make things comfortable including a much appreciated welcome pack.

The highlights of our stay included: touring the medieval villages, walking near Puycelsi (details in the cottage), the Sunday market at Saint Antonin and relaxing at the cottage and pool. We even heard the resident Nightingale sing!

Thanks to Liz and Graham for an excellent and memorable break and we highly recommend this property.

From the Owner

We love the French countryside and the peace and quiet that this rural setting provides. Though set in a very rural area, it offers easy access to Cordes sur Ciel, with its three pips World Heritage Site status. Only a little further away is Albi, another cultural centre with its cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec Museum. Toulouse, a university city is an hour 15mins away on the motorway. It has a wonderful city centre, cafés, and individual shops particularly French clothes and shoes for those who are looking for something different. It is quite possible to enjoy a day out on the beaches of the Med, at the Narbonne- Perpignan Coast, (the quieter side), as the sea is only a 3 hour motorway drive. .

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Toulouse, 70 mins away at 80 Kilometres Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

There is an equestrian centre close by, which may be of interest to those who would like to ride. Details can be provided, though it is untested by us.

For those interested in space exploration, check out the reviews of Cite de l'Espace in Toulouse. Wine tasting is offered by many of the local vineyards. There is a wine museum at Chateau du Cayla. Albi and Gaillac each have their own tourist information offices. The area is rich with medieval villages and bastides.

It is a three hour drive to the beaches of the Med at Leucate and La Franqui, (a couple of the quieter beaches which we have visited for a day out). Narbonne Plage is closer but busy in the season.

Car is essential. Toulouse airport is just over an hour away. The cottage at St Beauzile is about 30 minutes from the motorway at Gaillac, with easy access to Toulouse, Pau, Montpellier and the south coast of France. Directions are provided. There is a LeClerc supermarket in Gaillac that can provide just about everything you need, and is only 25 mins away (good fresh fish counter). A fine delicatessen is to be found at Cahuzac, about 15 mins away, with an exciting display of gourmet French food.

Cordes sur Ciel is about 13 miles. Gaillac is 14 miles. The medieval villages of Puycelsi and Penne are a short drive away. Gaillac has a couple of large supermarkets which offer all you could wish for, but are closed on Sundays (please note). Albi with its famous cathedral is 50 minutes drive. Toulouse is just over an hour by car. Toulouse airport is on the motorway system north of the city and offers easy access to Gaillac. Small autoroute charge. There is no public transport near the cottage.

Further Details:

A bank, a small supermarket, a boulangerie and a weekly market can be found in Cordes sur Ciel. Similar amenities are available in Cahuzac sur Vere, a pretty village where parking is easier. Cahuzac offers a fine delicatessen (Cote a Cote left at the junction and down towards the river) with interesting and specialists foods and delicacies. Lots of restaurants in the area. One of the great things about a holiday here is checking out the lunch time restaurants offering the plat du jour, the fixed price lunch menu which usually offers excellent value for money often with a glass of wine included.

  • Notes on accommodation: The Old Bakery is quite remote and a car is essential for access to supermarkets and other shops, amenities and facilities. For some, the quiet location adds to its charm and attraction, but for others the distance to shops and amenities maybe a step too far !! Experience suggests that the distance to adventure parks etc makes it less suitable for children. The remote location encourages relaxation and the quiter activities, eg. books, dvds, the internet and downloads. These are all designed to make your stay peaceful, quiet and relaxing aka a complete chill-out. The large dining room area offers winter guests the benefit of a log fire/ burner which makes the house beautifully warm. There is also gas central heating. The owners offer fresh bread to guests from their bread machine every morning at cost. For those arriving late on the first day (Saturday) a shopping service can be arranged with prior notice/arrangement. The dining room has a large table with seating for 6-7. Outside: Private and exclusive to guests a 12m pool in a garden setting with long views towards the Gaillac countryside (April to October). The pool is professionally tended / maintained with a weekly cleaning service. Guests have the use of the two acre garden, which includes a wild flower meadow, a south facing patio /pergola adjoining the cottage for outdoor dining with seating for six, facing south (away from the owners house). A BBQ is provided. Pool furniture is provided including parasol, loungers, chairs and table. There is a space for guests to park one car in the covered barn/ garage, good for keeping the car cool. Utility Room: Ironing board, iron, clothes airer, freezer and second refrigerator for drinks, wine and beer etc. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen provided and changed on the Saturday (for those staying for two weeks). Changeover day is on Saturday. No charge for pool towels provided. Other: The "snug" was a bakery, hence the name, and the old bread oven is still visible see the photos. There is a table tennis table in the covered barn/garage (for wet weather) where guests can park one car. Two bats and a ball provided, bring your own too.
