Cottage in Broadstairs, Kent, England - Moments from both Viking and Stone bay, close to restaurants and cafes.

Bleak House Lodge was built in 1801 as the lodge house for Bleak House, made famous in the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens. Located in a quite street in the heart of Broadstairs, the cottage is just a few moments walk from both Viking Bay and Stone Bay, as well as the many restaurants, cafes and bars the town has to offer. The property has been sympathetically renovated in 2014. It has stripped wooden floors and cast iron radiators. Where possible original features have been maintained, creating an authentic period atmosphere. There are separate living and dining rooms, both with open fires. Two bedrooms, one with an en suite shower room. Beds have very comfortable deep, sprung mattresses and are dressed with good quality white bed linen. There is also a beautiful south facing walled garden and terrace with table, chairs and a webber barbecue. The living room has a smart TV and wifi is available throughout the property. The living room opens up through to another sitting room (which opens onto the garden). This has a sofa, chair and extending dining table.The house is suitable for small children as the staircase leading from the dining room has a door. There is also a stair gate at the top of the stairs. A travel cot and a high chair are available for use, also a small box of toys for younger children.

We bought bleak house lodge as a holiday home and have spent 6 months on renovations, keeping the house as simple as possible with its original features.

In March 2016 We Extended the lounge to add another living room.

Notes on accommodation: The property has been newly renovated in 2014. There is ample free parking in the neighbouring streets. Outside: The mature, walled, private garden has a patio with a large table and four chairs plus two fold out chairs as well as a barbecue. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, beach towels and linen are included. The property is cleaned before arrival. Cleaning can be arranged during longer stays. Other: The dining room has a large table and seating for up to six and an open fire. The separate kitchen is off the dining room. There is a large cupboard under the stairs with room for a buggy, coats, boots, etc.

Beautiful cosy cottage a short walk from the beach

We had a great long weekend stay here - the cottage is well-equipped and cosy, and has been sympathetically restored. We really felt at home, and my kids loved the little garden with lots of beach equipment to borrow. Barely needed the car while we were there as everything is within easy walking distance, including beaches. We'll definitely think about going back.

A true gem. A one off property in a perfect location.

Bleak House Lodge is a truly unique property which has been loving restored and maintained by the owners. Some wonderful design touches mean that the house is at times like a Farrow & Ball show home and at others a comfortable family home. It's ideally located to enjoy the beach and coastal walks - and a very short stroll to Broadstairs' best restaurants. Highly recommended.

Perfect House

We had the most wonderful stay at Bleak House over the Christmas week. We are a family of five (including one baby) - the house was beautifully decorated and easily fit us all. The reception room and conservatory were much bigger then expected as was the dining room. We had a glorious Christmas and when we had our family and friend over for supper/coffee they ALL fell in love with Bleak House. It is literally the most perfect location - minutes from shops without the noise, minutes from the beach, minutes from one of the best restaurants on the Isle of Thanet. Communication with the owner was excellent and they were very helpful and accommodating. They even had a Christmas Tree! We are definitely going to stay in Bleak House again.

Charming shabby chic retreat

A very pleasant cottage with a strong shabby-chic style and personality; the bathroom layout might have been better, the ensuite are cleverly designed, but not too good for big people. The conservatory and garden were a pleasant surprise as we weren't expecting either. Favourite room was the dining room. Sofas have wandering seats, but some beautiful furnishings. Location is excellent, but parking is impossible anywhere nearby in August. Overall, really loved the house and would happily recommend it.

Owner's Response: I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay at the house. Parking can be a short walk away (perhaps 3 minutes or so), from the house in high season, especially if it is hot weather and a weekend, but we have not experienced a longer walk. I hope you didn't have to go much further. Out of season you can generally be a few steps away. Wandering sofa seats will be looked into! Stylish and fab location

Our family of 5 stayed for a long weekend at Bleak House Lodge at the end of May half term. The house is gorgeous, beautiful colour and stylish. It had everything we wanted and felt like a home away from home. We appreciated the toys/books for the kids and the tv was already set to CBeebies so they were delighted! Despite that we had a great day at Dreamland and on the lovely beach at Broadstairs, we only discovered the Italian gelato place on our last morning which was lucky for my waistline - so delicious and retro. Would definitely recommend Bleak House Lodge and would love to come back in autumn or summer another year.

Great cottage

We have just returned from a lovely week in Bleak House Lodge. We really liked the cottage, which was warm and cosy despite the cold weather and very well equipped. The decor is very stylish and you can tell someone has spent a lot of time thinking about the colours etc. The location is fantastic - you can be on the beach in a couple of minutes, a big advantage with children who won't walk anywhere! Despite this it is very quiet and peaceful.

Communication with the owners was excellent, they were always quick to respond and replied to an email asking how the dishwasher worked pretty much instantly.

We would really recommend this cottage - there is loads to do in Broadstairs and the surrounding area, we hope to go back!

Booking Notes:
Please note that 3 nights is 60% of the weekly cost. 4 nights at 70% and 5 nights at 80%.
A 50% deposit must be made when booking the property and full payment including the refundable deposit (directly to owner) made within 6 weeks of arrival.
A further £200 security deposit against damage will be taken, and repaid within a week of departure.

Changeover Day:
In high season a minimum period of 1 week, Friday to Friday where possible (please note day of changeover has changed from a Saturday). will be accepted, although closer to the time we may be able to take shorter bookings. In low season a minimum two night stay will be accepted.
Arrival is after 3pm, departure by 10am.

Notes on prices:
We offer short breaks. 3 nights at 60%, 4 nights at 70% and 5 nights at 80% of weekly rates.
