Period Thatch Cottage, Feature Well, Courtyard, Heart Of Historic Puddletown

Overview

Property

Updated: 28-Nov-2016
Cottage in Puddletown, Dorchester, Dorset, England - Easy Reach Of Dorset Attractions, Jurassic Coast, Beaches, Well Stocked Shop, Excellent Gastro Pub

Set in the heart of Puddletown in Thomas Hardy country, opposite the historic church and village square, our deceptively large period thatched cottage has a main bedroom, second bedroom and bathroom with shutters upstairs. Downstairs there is a large sitting room with original shutters, a hallway ideal for hanging coats and storing shoes, a separate dining room with feature glass covered well and a fully equipped kitchen. It is packed with character but furnished in a simple modern style. A secluded courtyard, accessible from inside and the lane at the back of the house, is ideal for sitting out in warm summer evenings and emptying the sand from bags and towels after a fun day at the beach. Within easy reach of all Dorset attractions, beaches (Weymouth, Swanage, Studland), the Jurassic Coast, Kingston Mauward and Athelhampton houses. Within 5 minutes walk there is the superb gastro pub, the Blue Vinny, the river Piddle, a well-stocked village shop and local doctors.

About the Owner

I bought my cottage in 2005 and have spent many happy years living there. Puddletown has a thriving community spirit and the people are very friendly and look out for each other.

I live locally but should you have any problems, the neighbours across the road or the lane at the back of the house will be more than happy to help. Dorset has an amazing coastline which I never tire of – for coastal walks on the cliffs or long sandy beach of Studland or just sitting with a pint of cider at the Square and Compass in Worth Matravers looking out to sea.

Thank you for letting us loose on your gorgeous house. We’ve had a wonderful time here. Everyone is so friendly in Puddletown and further afield. Farmer Palmer’s is fantastic for the children, and Monkey World too. Dan, Bonny & Mathilda

Smashing Break

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this lovely character cottage. The feature 'well' in the dining room was an intrigue to us all. The 'welcome gifts' a lovely and welcome touch. The living areas spacious though second bedroom a little of a squash for our children (8 and 10). Bed linen was GORGEOUS! all the necessary amenities and the information provided before and on arrival was fab. Puddle Town is a bit of a muddle town! Having the history book and tour made for a fun afternoon with the girls on scooters and a stop in the Blue Vinny for a pint. Only draw back is I did miss having a garden with the kids but given the weather was so rubbish it really didn't hinder too much. Close to many amenities for a good old walk out (old or young!)

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weeks stay in Puddletown. The cottage is lovely, very comfortable and very well equipped. Perfect for the four of us (me, my husband, 3 year old and 4 month old).

Great location for exploring the beautiful Dorset coastline and inland attractions too. We visited a different beach everyday!

Would definitely stay again.

Lovely cottage in Hardy Country

  • 4 of 5

Lovely, period cottage in beautiful, quiet little corner of Puddletown, close to lots of places of interest and short walk to local pub. No garden but enclosed, private courtyard at the back, with pots of flowers and climbers, good for breakfasts and after dinner drinks. Parking no problem, right outside the house. The owner had thought of everything, with the cottage being very well-equipped - some welcoming goodies had even been left for us on arrival - thank you, very much appreciated. Excellent customer service with straighforward booking and detailed arrival instructions. Photos on the website don't do the cottage justice. Would recommend and would definitely stay again.

Traumhafte Unterkunft

  • 4 of 5

Location

From the Owner

If you are interested in sailing, as I am, and watersports, this is the place to be with opportunities in Poole Harbour, Studland beach and of course the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. There are many places to explore: on the coast (Lyme Regis, Bridport, Charmouth, Swanage), historical places (Corfe Castle, Tyneham) or in land walking across fields and woodlands, in undulating Dorset countryside.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Within 10 miles: Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove & Castle, Jurassic Coastline, Ringstead (pebbles), Weymouth (sandy)

Within 25 miles the Isle of Purbeck: Tyneham (coves), Kimmeridge (coves), Swanage (sandy), Studland National Trust beach (long sandy beach), Old Harry Rocks

Travel:

Nearest airports are Bournemouth and Southampton, ferries to Weymouth and Poole. Just off the main A31 it’s a 2.5 hour drive from London. Mainline train station in Dorchester with taxis or buses (not very frequently) to Puddletown.

Distances:

Poole/Bournemouth, Monkey World, Tank World, Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove & Castle, Tyneham Ghost Village, Studland Bay, Weymouth and Portland which hosted the 2012 Olympic sailing events, are all within easy reach. The well-known Jacobean Athelhampton House is within a mile, Kingston Mauward House, gardens and animal park within 5 miles. The Tolpuddle Festival and Hardy week take place in July. In land is the undulating Dorset countryside and historic Shaftesbury with the famous Gold Hill.

Further Details:

Puddletown is a pretty, typical Dorset village on the River Piddle, which has a well-stocked village shop, historic church and is within easy reach of Puddletown forest, Hardy’s Cottage and other good walking areas. An excellent gastro-pub is a few minutes' walk away, and Dorchester, a 10 minute drive away, has a 24-hour Tesco, Waitrose, Co-op, Cinemas, Library, Tourist Information Office, Museum, choice of restaurants. The Piddle Valley offers several country pubs with good food.

Facilities

From the Owner

There is plenty for children to do and my nieces and nephews have loved spending time at Monkey World, Tank World, Farmer Palmers and Kingston Mauward. There is plenty for everyone, and we all enjoy going down to the Blue Vinny Pub in Puddletown for a great meal at the end of the day. I hope you enjoy your time here as much as I do.
