Updated: 17-Jun-2016

Gites de Vergne is nestled within the tiny hamlet of Vergne - a collection of red-roofed tiled, stone cottages surrounded by open countryside with fields of sunflowers and maize stretching as far as the eye can see. This beautiful, Charentais house is set within a garden of established trees, an orchard filled with apple, pear, plum and cherry trees with its own private swimming pool. The accommodation comprises of two, self-sufficient gites. The Gite is wonderfully situated, peacefully rural, with a wealth of sites, activities and attractions to suit the whole family, close by. The market town of Civray, with a 12th century Romanesque church, situated on the Charente river is within walking/cycling distance from the house, holding markets twice weekly. Walking, cycling, canoeing in a tranquil setting is on the doorstep with a plethora of unspoilt, historic villages/towns to explore within easy reach

About the Owner

Passionate about interior design and style, Adrian, a chartered building consultant, having run a successful bespoke kitchen business in the UK for many years, decided with his wife, to buy a rural property in France offering potential to realise his creativity and knowledge. Recreating and restoring a Charantaise house with the space to create several gites has provided the ideal outlet for his design abilities. His wife, Micheline, a retired health professional and Francophile needed no persuasion to embark on this exciting development. Sharing the belief that holiday accommodation should excel or at least equal the comfort and style of home, they have renovated the gites to an exceptionally high standard to provide a quality environment within a rural setting.

Very welcoming hosts and a beautiful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we booked this property nothing could have been too much trouble for our host Miche and Adrian. Upon arrival we were certainly not disappointed. Masion de Maitre's large rooms are furnished with a mixture of antique and contemporary furniture in great style. The beautiful kitchen/living room is very well equipped and the icing on the cake was the lovely meal awaiting us upon arrival, plus a fridge stocked with goodies to ease us into the holiday mood! The gardens surrounding the property were beautiful and the pool and sundeck so inviting it was hard to drag ourselves away. However we managed it and found Civray to be sleepy little town with all the basic amenities one needs and one or two good restaurants. A visit to Poitiers is also recommended should you feel the need for 'bright lights'. All in all a wonderful location and fantastic hosts. Thank you for letting us share your lovely home. We hope we can visit again sometime.
