Great villa and pool in a quiet location

  • 5 of 5

We're seasoned renters of property and holiday cottage owners ourselves (in UK). This villa does not disappoint - it is in a quiet location with views of the White Mountains to the south and the sea to the north, suitable for mature couples (like us!) and families with children

The villa is a good size for up to 4 (there is a sofa bed for a fifth) and is well-equipped. The pool (note: it is 1.5m depth throughout) and the roof terrace are lovely features.

Basic shops and tavernas are within 10 minutes walking distance or a short drive. A hire car allows access to a range of beaches and other attractions. We noted owner's advice and went to the south coast on a cloudy day in the north and found the sun and a delightful beach at Damnoni (near Plakias). We also walked the Samaria Gorge (tip: organised through the Vamos Tourist Office) which was a fantastic experience (though it's c.18km in the heat and we are experienced walkers). We were very taken with Georgiopouli and would particularly recommend the Paradise Taverna and the Poseidon Fish Taverna. Boat trips and a nice beach here too.

Chania is about an hour away - the old town/harbour is well worth a visit.

All in all, we had a great holiday and would absolutely recommend this property.

A beautiful location and lovely characterful villa

  • 5 of 5

We loved the villa with its characterful, comfortable vintage style. The owners clearly have great taste in interiors! The large pool and terrace were a real treat on the very hot days. We spent a a few of the hottest days by the pool in the morning - enjoying the cooling mountain breeze - then headed to the beach mid afternoon when it wasn't as hot. The kids really loved having their own pool and had lots of fun splashing and swimming in it every day of our holiday. We enjoyed visiting the local beaches - Georgiopouli was a fave abd Kalyves too. One cloudy day we drove down to the south coast to find the sun - only took an hour - and went to Triopetra beach - beautiful wide uncrowded beach -couple of taverna. lovely but very windy. Great local villages to the villa, Litsarda (walkable) has a great pizzeria and Vamos very good for taverna and shops. Further away are some more great taverna - we searched Tripadvisor for recommendations of some great places to eat nearby. All in all a great place to get away from it all in a beautiful unspoilt location. We would highly recommend a holiday at Villa Anastasia.

From the Owner

We first visited Greece in 1990 and fell in love with this beautiful country. Having visited many of the islands we first came to Crete in 1997 and were stunned by its fantastic scenery, charming villages and the sense of peace and tranquillity. With some trepidation we finally took the plunge and bought our property 10 years ago. It hasn't all been plain sailing as Greek bureaucracy would test the patience of the saintliest saint. But we don't regret our decision for a minute as we love every second that we spend at our house even the constant DIY! The sheer joy of waking every morning to clear blue skies, sunshine and silence is still not something we take for granted. Roll on retirement!!

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Local beach resorts are Almerida, Kalives and Georgioupoli all of which are easily reached by car and definitely worth exploring. Almerida is 10 minutes drive and has shallow waters so is excellent for children. Both Kalives and Georgioupoli are 15 minutes by car and have lovely beaches. Georgioupoli is an attractive resort with a 7km beach and a river where you can see terrapins and beautiful bird life.

Chania is the nearest airport and is around 45 minutes drive from the villa. Heraklion is further away around 90 minutes drive.

Vamos, a wonderful, traditional Greek village, with a bank, bakers, small supermarkets, excellent tavernas and the local tourist office is only a few minutes drive by car. Closer to the villa (10 minute walk) is a small shop on the Xirosterni road where you can purchase fresh bread, vegetables, fruit, wine, cheese etc.

Further Details:

Close to Litsarda there many other beautiful Apokoron villages to explore such as Gavalochori, Douliana, Xirosterni and Kefalas. The local countryside offers many opportunities for peaceful walks following old donkey trails through stunning scenery.

Still predominately undeveloped Western Crete is characterised by sandy beaches, waterside tavernas, sleepy villages and a profusion of orange, lemon and olive groves framed against the magnificent White mountains. Car hire is essential and will give you the freedom to explore the many beautiful and hidden delights to be found across the region.

A visit to Chania old town and the stunning Venetian harbour is a must. Here you can wander through the atmospheric cobbled backstreets admiring beautiful architecture, wrought iron balconies filled with flowers and tumbling bouganvillea. Before reaching Chania you can stop off at ancient Aptera, this renovated fort has fantastic views towards Chania, Souda Bay and Kalives.

If you are feeling adventurous the Samaria Gorge is well worth the sore feet you will undoubtedly end up with! This gorge is spectacular and will take you around 6 hours to walk through. It is easy to book a trip in the beautiful tourist office in Vamos.

Other places well worth a visit include Rethymno which also has a beautiful Venetian harbour and old town, Argroupoli, Lake Kournas (the only fresh water lake in Crete) and the south coast. This has a completely different feel to the north coast and is reached in around 50 - 60 minutes with a wonderful drive through the mountains. The roads are excellent.

We have a Welcome Pack in the house which contains details of everything to do and see in the local area including the many wonderful beaches. Keen walkers will relish the many amazing trails to be found in the surrounding countryside - we have many walks books and maps which are available for guests to use.
