Tamarisk House is an ideal holiday home for the larger family or group of friends; a substantial rambling house with plenty of room for everyone to find their own 'space'. It perches on a steep hillside overlooking the village and beach of Mawgan Porth with panoramic views across the valley and inland towards St. Mawgan. Just ten minutes walk down the road and you will reach the beach of golden sands - perfect for family fun and serious surfing! Conveniently located behind the beach are the family-friendly Merrymoor pub, shops for holiday items and groceries, and a small selection of cafes and takeaways. Five minutes up the hill from Tamarisk House is Bre Pen Farm - visit their farm shop for a wide selection of local produce and gifts, or indulge in a traditional Cornish cream tea in their cosy tea room.

Why Cathy Almond chose Mawgan Porth

After holidaying in Cornwall for many years, and falling in love with Mawgan Porth, we finally decided to put down our own roots here, and we became the excited new owners of Tamarisk House on 2nd January 2002. Since then, we've been visiting it regularly all year round ourselves, and sharing it with other families as a holiday rental. Cornwall to us is just irresistible - whether it's sunny in the summer, or wild and windy in the winter. (Or sunny in winter and wild and windy in the summer...).

What makes this house unique

We liked Tamarisk House from the moment we saw it - it has a combination of vintage character (the oldest part of the house was built in the mid 1800s) and modern facilities (yes it has central heating - but it's still nice to have a roaring log fire too). Because of the way it was originally built and then extended, the house 'rambles'; so for a larger group, there's no problem with finding space for everyone - there's even table tennis and table football in the basement. We've equipped Tamarisk House with everything we'd hope to find in a holiday home that accommodates an extended family or two families sharing, and we welcome suggestions for improvement. But most of all, we hope that you enjoy the house as much as we do.

Location

Coast/Beach:

10 minutes walk to the family-friendly beach with its lifeguards (May to September) and surf school. Many other interesting and fun beaches within driving distance, including Watergate Bay for extreme surfers.

Travel:

Newquay Airport is only 2 miles away. The nearest train station is Newquay, but if being met by friends/family or taxi, you might prefer to alight at Bodmin Parkway. Own (or hire) car(s) recommended as although there are buses to both Newquay and Padstow, they are infrequent and end early in the evening. (And for those wishing to dine out further afield, there are many local taxi firms available.)

Notes on accommodation: The playroom is home to a chest containing a substantial duple collection, and there are other toys available for small children, as well as a collection of videos and books (for all ages) and a small selection of games. There's also a collection of buckets and spades, wind-breaks and boogie boards in the basement, donated by other guests. Hair dryers are provided. There are shaver sockets in the first floor bathroom, shower room and most bedrooms. All beds have duvets and two pillows per person. Stair-gates are already fitted upstairs and two further stair-gates can be positioned as needed. A first basket of logs for the fire will be provided and further fuel can be purchased locally. Outside: Terraced garden over several levels with stone and wooden steps. Patio and decking areas with with picnic benches, brick-built barbecue and additional seating. Steps to main road. (Very) steep driveway to road with small parking/turning space for 2 or 3 cars (please phone to ask about this if you're concerned). Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed-linens are included but please bring you own cot bedding. Personal towels available for hire. We clean for your arrival and then again after your departure. A weekly linen change is provided for multi-week bookings. Other: Basement: Recreation room containing table football. Recreation room containing table tennis (with 'local rules', as the room is not quite big enough...) Shower room (with hanging space for dripping wetsuits);

Had a lovely stay at Tamarisk house. The house is well laid out and catered for every need of our family and extended family ranging from 1 1/2 years to 63 years of age! Great location, great house...driveway is a little steep but you soon get used to it!

Nice big cottage ideal for children too nice views too the beach

Overall experience of mawgan porth was enjoyable good location great beach nice local food at the travellers rest and merrymoor, our cottage was great nice big kitchen with everything in the kitchen, the only downside was the steep hill down to the cottage and the bushes left scratch marks on our cars but other than that we really enjoyed our stay in the beautiful cottage

Tamarisk is spacious, comfortable and well equipped. Perfect for our two families!

Our third year at Tamarisk and we loved it as much as we did the first time. Just 5 minutes from the beach and sea views from the back of the house, it's a great place to relax and unwind. The property is kept to a very good standard with everything you need to hand. There is plenty of outdoor seating and an excellent decking area outside the kitchen window that we spent most of our evenings on! There is eight of us and the property accommodates us perfectly. We all board so the separate downstairs shower room for wetsuits makes things a lot easier. We love it here.

Booking Notes:
Bookings are held provisionally for up to 2 weeks until a (non-refundable) deposit of 25% of the holiday price is received, along with a completed Booking Form. The balance is due 60 days before your holiday. Payments may be made online here, by cheque or by electronic bank transfer. (Please contact us if you prefer to pay by cheque or electronic bank transfer). We also reserve the right to request a returnable damages deposit.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Friday, except for Christmas and New Year (where this will depend on the school holidays and changes each year). Out of season, we can be more flexible. Weekend breaks are also available.

Notes on prices:
Weekend-only (up to 4 nights) bookings are 80% of the full weekly price. Out of the main holiday season, we can also extend a booking through the following weekend for an additional 20% on the weekly price (subject to availability) - please contact us if you are interested (the online system will not calculate this rate accurately).

All bed-linens, 2 tea-towels and hand-towels for each bathroom are included in the price. Personal towels (not including beach towels) are available to hire at £6 per person - please ask if you would like this service.

Although the house only has beds for 9 plus baby (there is a cot provided, but no cot bed-linens), there is space for, and no problem with bringing additional babes in travel cots, but please let us know in advance.
