About the property

Lannecaube, Nr. Pau, Pyrenees Atlantiques, Aquitaine, France - A perfect 18th Century Romantic Getaway with Pool near to the Fabulous City of Pau.

I have very pretty views across the rolling Bearn countryside and I am surrounded by woodland. My owners will also let you share their pool. My Pool is 5m long and 3m wide and is 1.2m deep so is very safe to use and is a godsend on those very hot days. I am in a quiet rural location but with easy access to many interesting places.

Its very tranquil and quiet here but not too far from hustle and bustle.

About Lesley Groome

After Mike gave up his plastics business we decided we wanted to do something different and be near to things that we enjoy doing i.e. skiing, swimming, walking etc.

We sold our home in the UK and bought Maison Madaune (pronounced mad-on-a) which is an 18th Century Farmhouse. We moved out here permanently in June 2012 and we have never looked back.

Owning a Gite has been great for us because we have met so many wonderful people from all over the World that we would otherwise not have met.

We enjoy the climate because the Summers are hot but not too hot and the Winters are mild.

We also enjoy the food and the wine is fantastic.

Lesley Groome purchased this apartment in 2011

Why Lesley Groome chose Lannecaube

We chose this part of South West France for it's beauty and diversity and because it is within easy reach of Sea and Mountains and the beautiful city of Pau.

Each village has a Fete throughout the year where you can enjoy some local cuisine and live music. They play well into the early hours and they are great fun for all ages.

We liked this area because it is so quiet and peaceful. The Tree Frogs are sometimes a bit noisy but it is very amusing when the grass hoppers join in!

What makes this apartment unique

Our Gite is very well situated for access to the A65 and A64. The country roads are very well maintained which makes it easy to get around.

There is so much to do and see within a short distance away and you can get there with no traffic jams!

Our Gite is extremely stylish and comfortable and because there are very little properties nearby, the nights are very dark which is fantastic for star gazing and also for getting a good nights sleep!

A little gem in SW France

  • 5 of 5

Michael & Lesley gave us a great welcome, and we cannot fault their attention to detail. The gite is exceptionally clean and well presented. It has everything you need for a rural retreat for two. The facilities are excellent and it was nice to have the little pool to collapse into at the end of a hot day exploring the local area. The Tourist Office in the nearby village of Lembeye has an enormous selection of "things to do" and we made the most of it. The gite is right in the middle of the Madiran wine area, so we made several excursions to vineyards and Chateaux in order to stock up with the local (excellent) wines.

We explored Aire-sur-l'Adour to the north and Marciac to the east (shame we missed the excellent jazz festival which takes place in August). Pau, the nearest city has a pedestrian friendly centre with lots of parking, restaurants, and things to see. We can recommend the Bar Galway on the picturesque Boulevard des Pyrénées. Those mountains, should you want to visit, are easily accessible by car, being about 2hrs drive to the top of the Col de Pourtalet that leads into Spain.

We have no hesitation in recommending Mike & Lesley's lovely gite.

Owner's Response: Hi Simon and Audrey. What a great review. Thank you so much and once again thank you for returning once again!! You are real suckers for punishment. The perfect little Gite in the sun.

  • 5 of 5

This is our 4th year in a row staying at this beautiful Gite in Lannecaube. The Gite has everything that you need, it stays cool when its really hot and you quickly treat it as a home from home. We just love the region as it provides the perfect balance of days relaxing around the pool with days exploring the beautiful city of Pau, the surrounding countryside and the Pyrennees. If you are a fan of eating out and enjoying the odd glass of fine wine, then this is the place for you. Each year we've managed to find new restaurants with great food and great hospitality. It's worth paying a visit to the Tourist Information Office in the nearby town Lembeye where you will find details of all the local attractions for each week of your stay. We've found over the years that the area has become more focused on tourism but still maintains its rural identity. Each local town/village holds a fete and if you want to immerse yourself in the local community then this is a must. It's also worth spending a day/night at the world renowned jazz festival at Marciac, the atmosphere is brilliant, even if you are not a fan of jazz!! I suppose the test of how much you enjoy a holiday is whether you would recommend to friends and relatives. We certainly have and will continue to talk in the highest terms of the Gite and the best hosts you could ever wish to meet, Lesley & Mike.

Many thanks

Brian & Laura

Owner's Response: Hi Brian and Laura. Well what can we say but Thank You so much for returning yet again to stay with us. We are both truly amazed at how many guests have returned to us as we thought maybe our Gite would be too quiet for most people but this proves us wrong and if we hadn’t of decided to go into the Gite business we would never have met truly lovely people like you two. We loved having you here and exploring with us, this little corner of France. Enjoy your new grandchildren and have a super Christmas. Lesley and Mike xx

Another Fantastic Stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our 3rd year in a row staying at Lesley & Mike’s beautiful Gite. We have got to know the area really well but still founds lots of new things to do and places to visit. We even got a wave from the manager of the Tourist Information and a warm welcome from the owner of the Central Park Bar in Lembeye!! Garlin is also a lovely town and its worthwhile stopping off and having a walk about. Pau is also just 30 minutes drive and is a lovely city to explore with lots of lovely restaurants. If you like a coffee or exotic tea ‘Pau’s Café’ is really worth a visit.

What can I say about Lesley & Mike. As many other visitors have said, they are the perfects hosts and welcome you with open arms. We are slightly biased in that we have got to know them well and we keep in touch throughout the year. However, first impressions always count as they say and you won’t be disappointed with the hospitality and the 5 star standards of the Gite. It’s just perfect with everything that you need and during those lovely hot days it stays nice and cool! When it does get a bit hot you can always have a dip in the refreshing pool and as we kept saying ‘its fine once you’re in’! But seriously it’s just right and makes all the difference.

We did miss Cheppie this year as she used to come visit in the mornings especially when I came back from a run:(

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday this is definitely the place to come. Lesley & Mike have a knack of knowing whether their visitors want to keep to themselves or are happy to spend time chatting and finding out about the local area. We had a great time at the Tango Festival in Vic Fezensac and of course the Jazz Festival in Marciac is a must.

We’ll definitely be back

Wonderful gite in a tranquil setting.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the gite for two weeks in August 2016. Upon our arrival, we were greeted like old friends by Mike and Lesley and made to feel very welcome with a refreshing drink and a chat under the gazebo.

The gite was immaculately presented and we found it to be very well appointed. Even though the temperature was into the mid-30s most days, inside the the gite was beautifully cool. The pool provided a welcome opportunity to cool-off after a hot day. Even though the gite is attached to the owner's house, we found Mike and Lesley to be unobtrusive and respectful of our privacy but were there if we needed them.

Lannecaube is in a very rural and peaceful setting yet within an hour's drive to the Atlantic coast at Biarritz or to the Cols of the Haute Pyrenees. Highlights of our stay included:

-Cascades at the Pont d'Espagne

-Cable car up to the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (Observatory)

-Bidart & Guethary, on the coast just South of Biarritz

The tourist train at Artouste is extremely busy in high season so if you are thinking of going we advise to pre-book the tickets.

The Saturday market at Vic-en-Bigorre had a wide variety of stalls - you must try the confit de canard!

Overall, a totally relaxing fortnight made all the more enjoyable by our hosts' generous hospitality.

Hugh and Ros, Worcestershire.

Owner's Response: There is not a lot to say about this review other than Fantastic!! Thank you Ros & Hugh for taking the time to write this for us. We pride ourselves on reading how much people want to be left alone to enjoy their stay here and after these remarks, we can see that we are getting it just right. It was a real pleasure to have met you both. We would also like to thank you for leaving our Gite as beautiful as you found it. We really appreciate the way you looked after it and we do hope that one day you will return to stay with us again. Take care of yourselves. Warm wishes from Lesley & Mike xxxx

An ideal base

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our holiday in this lovely property. It was comfortable and beautifully furnished. Lesley and Mike were most welcoming and friendly hosts. The site was a good base for exploring this area of France. We have already recommended the property to friends and if this is the area you wish to explore then look no further you've found your ideal base.

The Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Hi Lesley & Mike,

Well, we loved it so much last year that we decided to return this year for 3 weeks! Last year we drove to Portsmouth and travelled by Ferry to Santander then drove to the Gite. This year we decided to do the sensible thing and fly to Bordeaux and hire a car, much easier and relaxing! As we drove from the airport the clouds began to gather and just as we arrived in Lannecaube the heavens opened and we had a spectacular thunder and lightening storm.

We were met by Lesley & Mike and made to feel so welcome and it felt like we were arriving to visit friends, but we'll try to remain impartial while writing a review! We sat under cover enjoying a glass of wine and catching up. The next day it was clear blue skies and lovely and hot!

The Gite was as charming and spotless as we had remembered from last year and of course we knew where everything was. We settled into the holiday very quickly and caught up others fiends at the local Fete the following night. We think the local Fetes are a must and a great way to soak up the local atmosphere and hospitality and there is always a great fireworks display.

Even although we were return visitors we still managed to find lots of new things to do and places to visit, for example our visit to Lourdes then onto the Pyrenees. We had an amazing cable car and ski lift ride to the top with spectacular views and breathtaking pictures, really worth a visit. Thinking of bringing the bike next year and pretending to be in the Tour de France!!

We also went watering rafting with Lesley and Mike which was a great experience and a first for us. We even shared the raft with a family from a town only 20 miles from our home! There are lots of places to eat and some great food on offer. We tended to go out for lunch and there some lovely hotels which have a set menu at a very reasonable price. If you enjoy a coffee and just sitting watching life go by pay the Central Park bar a visit in Lembeye. The area around Lannecaube is very peaceful and the Gite is a great place to sit and relax and when it gets a bit too hot, just slide into the pool to cool off. Lesley and Mike are great hosts and as others have said in their reviews they are happy to leave you to your own devices, but are there is you need any help or advice, Mike does have a great selection of red wines though! It goes without saying that we would thoroughly recommend staying at the Gite and would you believe it we are coming back next year!

BIARRITZ - 1.5hrs:

On the Atlantic Coast, is the lovely town of Biarritz. A very trendy and lively town with super architecture, beaches, shops and of course the rolling Atlantic Ocean. Biarritz is not all glitz as in the old port there are some very good Fish Restaurants and it tends to be a little quieter and very picturesque.

St Jean de Luz:

If you like a more traditional feel, then this is for you. It will take you around 1.45hrs but is a beautiful seaside town and well worth a visit

Travel:

You would need some form of transport if you stayed with me.

Nearest Airports:

Pau (30 minutes)

Lourdes (45 minutes)

Biarritz (1hr 30 hrs)

Toulouse (2 hrs)

Bordeaux (1hr 30 mins)

I am 10 miles off junction 8 on the A65.

There is no public transport that runs through the village unfortunately.

Please see my website for further details.

Distances:

Garlin - our nearest town is a 15min drive. Everything you would need.

Lembeye - our nearest large town is a 20min drive. Thursday morning market.

Pau - 30min drive. A fantastic City.

Biarritz - 1.5hr. Beautiful beach, shops, restaurants.

Lourdes - 1.10hr. The Holy City famous for the apparition of our Lady of Lourdes to Bernadette.

Pont d'Espagne - 1.45. A long drive but worth it to see the wonderful waterfalls and lake at the top. A super day out.

Further Details:

Pau Grand Prix - 11/12/13th May. International Formula 3 event includes supporting races for GT4 and Formula 4.

Pau Historique Grand Prix - 20/21st May. If you love Classic Cars this is a must.

Le Tour de France 2018 - 7th July to 29th July.

The 105th Tour de France. This is the shortest event this century!

Starting in The Vendee, France with an overnight stay in Pau on the 26th July. Finishing in Paris.

JAZZ in Marciac - end July, beginning of August for 3 weeks - 45 min drive.

A musical event that has been held under the stars in August since 1978. Over 200,000 visitors meet every year in the small village of Marciac to enjoy this gathering with famous jazzmen, jazzwomen and young musicians.

For over 2 weeks, concerts take place under a giant marquee or at the Astrada. A fringe festival also takes place in the main square of Marciac which still has it’s own medieval arcades. Smaller ‘Jazz in Marciac’ sessions also take place at other times of the year.

Pau Horse Trials is the only 4* event held in France and marks the end of European eventing. This is being held on 24th to 28th October.

Caves at Betherram - 45min drive:

If you love caves you will certainly love these. It takes approx 1.40 minutes to walk around on a guided tour complete with a boat ride and train!

Closer to me:

There is so much to see and do that it is impossible to list everything. There are the usual Chateau's to stroll around and of course the famous Vineyards. The most local to me is 'Madiran', a truly magnificent Red Wine is produced here. There are many more but why not come and see for yourself!

Chateau le Arricau-Bordes & Winery - 15 mins

The most beautiful Chateau you would ever have seen. You can go to the Cave (Winery) and sample wines until your hearts content. You can obviously purchase some very reasonably priced wines.

Fetes and Music events held locally all through the year.

There is so much to do if you wanted to keep busy.......or you can just sit and 'do nothing' in comfort and peace and quiet!
