2 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, dining & sitting areas. Under Hallgrimskirkja, with magnificent views over the bay
The apartment is above one of Reykjavik's old listed houses, in the best spot you could find, a residential road 100 metres from the Hallgrimskirka Cathedral. It is one of the highest points in Reykjavik on the hill overlooking the bay and the mountains beyond. Refurbished sensitively keeping many original features while having all modern comforts. The best bakery, café and ice cream shop in Iceland are all quite literally within metres of our front door. Best spot in town, by miles.
The kitchen looks over the square where Reykjavik Roasters, the famous café can be found. It is fully and stylishly equipped. The dining and sitting area face north, over the rooftops and down to the harbour, bay and Mount Esja. We get magnificent sightings of the Northern Lights from our vantage point.
One bedroom has a king sized double bed. The other has two singles which can be configured together to be a queen sized double. The sofa in the siting room opens out into a very comfortable large bed too.
The bathroom is newly fitted and has a thunderously powerful shower. The hot water in Reykjavik is hydro-thermally heated so cannot run out. Not ever. You would need to run a shower continually for many thousands of years to make any real impression on the aquifer. It's great. Go to the swimming pool. It is 200 metres away at the end of Njalsgata. Art deco. Gorgeous. We go every day.
There is a small utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer. We provide washing powder. This is crucial as there are very few laundry facilities in Reykjavik.
The location is all but perfect. You can give it 5 stars for Location, but if there was an option to give it 6 stars everyone would. Hallrimskirkja is the heart of the city, and we are there, right next to it. Nothing you would want to see of do is more than a 5 minute walk, and Reykjavik's most iconic figure, the great statue of Leif Eriksson, is one of our nearest neighbours.

About Gudrun Livingstone
We are a British/Icelandic family living in Iceland. We used to live at the English boarding school where Fergus my husband was headmaster, and go to Iceland as often as we could in the holidays. We have decided to live in Iceland permanently now, and run a guesthouse in Spitalastigur in addition to this managing flat and our cottage by a lake.
Why Gudrun Livingstone chose Reykjavik
I am born and bred in Reykjavik and know the city like the back of my hand, this is by far the best spot in the whole city. I looked for a long time for exactly this location, it's geographical importation is wonderful, high up on a hill in an old traditional listed building. There is a very bohemian atmosphere with trendy cafes and restaurants all around, the local swimming pool was another reason. Even though it is so central it is a residential street with families.

Two friends and I stayed for a week in this perfectly located apartment in Reykjavik. Parking is available very close by at the Hallgrimskakirja. I would recommend waiting to rent a car until you are ready to leave the city, because we were able to go everywhere we wanted to go on foot until we did the Golden Circle and other out-of-town locales. There is a coffee house that has pastry and a bakery that has coffee across the street. There is also an ice cream (gelatto) shop nearby. Like most city apartments the bedrooms do not have lots of room, so we had to use the living room floor for some suitcases. That, however, was because we packed much more clothing than we needed. While I recommend this property for many groups, be advised that there is a narrow staircase that leads to the apartment. It is not for the mobility impaired. It was great to have a washer and dryer available. it meant we could have clean clothes for our second week driving around the island. We had a wonderful time and would certainly come back again.
Could not be more satisfied!
I stayed here for a week in June 2015 with a friend. There were meant to be four of us staying, but two pulled out. The apartment is set in a residential district away from (most of) the touristy hotels. The cathedral is less than two minutes up the hill, and the walk to town is very straight forward and takes around 10 minutes. The main shopping street is two streets down, and there are many bars and restaurants to explore down there; ranging from cheap eats to fine dining (for those travelling on a budget, we recommend the Drenkin grill opposite the apartment and the Noodle stop turning right down down Laugavegur). We arranged the tour pickups and airport transfers with the flybus from the Hotel Leifur Eiriksson; 2 minutes walk opposite the cathedral. The walk to the promenade along the shore takes 5 minutes. Overall, we couldn't ask for a better location! The apartment also has fantastic views over the harbour toward the snow-capped mountains beyond; which is even more magical at sunset (which lasts a very long time in mid June!).
The apartment is open plan; with an updated traditional style. The kitchen has everything you need to self cater; there is a dining area and a sitting area with a free view with a few English channels (including kids channels). One bedroom has two single beds, another is a double bed and the sofa also folds out into a bed. There was plenty of space for the two of us; it would have been cosy with four, but there is still enough space for a comfortable stay.
The owner was lovely and extremely helpful, and ready to answer any questions we had. She also went the extra mile to suggest places to visit and tips to make our stay more enjoyable.
And it is a lot cheaper (with four paying) than the cheapest hotel!
We have just come back from an amazing week in Iceland. We are a family of five and were very comfortable in this home. It was very warm and welcoming with excellent facilities.
It is very well positioned for sightseeing on foot around Reykjavik and easily assessable if self driving. Parking is metered but cheap and easy to find. Reykjavik is very much on the doorstep. There is a well stocked Bonus two streets down and the coffee shop over the road is recommended.
The owner was very friendly and helpful when booking, leading up to and during the holiday.
The apartment is a true gem and if we are lucky enough to visit this magical country again we would have no hesitation in booking here again.
