Villa in Faugeres, Nr. Pezenas, Herault, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - In the Foothills of The Languedoc National Park, yet still only a short drive from The Med Coast

Surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, the unspoilt village of Faugères dates back to the 11th century, and gives its name to one of the most highly regarded wines in the South of France. Situated in Herault, Southern France just inside the Languedoc National Park, with mountains behind and the sea in front, it is an ideal place to base yourself; whether you are looking for a holiday exploring historical sites, walking, cycling, lazing on the beaches of the nearby Mediterranean coast, visiting vineyards or just relaxing on the terrace. There is everything you could wish to have for a holiday. Sandy Mediterranean beaches are 35 minutes away. Wonderful lakes and rivers in breathtaking locations nearby offer another alternative for swimming. Montpellier and Bezier are good centres for shopping. A 20 minute drive away is the lively medieval town of Pezenas, home of Moliere, with period architecture, a great choice of restaurants, pavement cafes, antiques and a lively Saturday market.

Fantastic French Idyll

  • 5 of 5

Lou Cigallou is a wonderful holiday experience. The setting of the villa is great with views that one could never tire off.It is close to many wonderful places to visit such as Carcassonne, Pezenas and Sete.We thoroughly enjoyed watching the grapes being harvested whilst sitting on the patio sipping Faugeres wine ( which is reasonably priced and very palatable ).The villa is extremely comfortable and well-equipped and Adrian and Nick are an added bonus as they are such good raconteurs and are so helpful. In addition, Lorraine genuinely wants her guests to have a super holiday and having met her I can state that nothing is too much trouble for her to ensure this. I recommend this villa wholeheartedly.

Fantastic setting with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

We arrived nearly two weeks ago and have loved staying in this beautiful setting. The house is very well equipped and has everything you could need. The welcome supplies were a great added bonus too - milk, pate, cheese, wine etc.

It's location is superb for exploring and we've had some lovely trips to Roquebrun, Saint Guilhem Le Desert, Pezenas and the Gorge d'Heric to name a few.

What has always been lovely is to return and have a glass of wine overlooking the vineyards and a dip in the gorgeous pool!

Thank you Lorraine - you have a georgeous house, and we'd love to return one day!!

Perfect French Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay in Faugeres was just superb. The villa itself which was spacious and beautifully appointed with a great pool, the location and views over the countryside and easy access to do everything you would want from a holiday in this region. Lorraine always replied quickly to any enquiry and Adrian and Nick, the caretakers, full of local information and tips. I would recommend this property without hesitation and would love to return in the not to distant future.

Faugeres May 2016

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful week's holiday! Having not visited the south of France before we all four agreed that Faugeres and the surrounding area is very beautiful and definitely well worth future visits.

With regard to the villa, we absolutely could not have wanted for more and the accommodation had stunning views across the open fields (many of which were growing grapes as you would expect!)

The villa which was beautiful in itself had everything you would possibly want in terms of facilitating a relaxing stay, including an outdoor BBQ which we used most days. The weather was warm and dry while we were there and we were able to take advantage of the lovely pool everyday during our stay in mid May (did not need the pool to be heated although the option was there).

Lorraine was very easy to contact and informative during the booking process and when we arrived, also providing a 'house book' at the villa which gave plenty of practical information and local and further afield tourist guidance.

We would all very much imagine that given the opportunity we would take a holiday here again.

Many thanks Lorraine!

Regards, Johnny

Owner's Response: Dear John Wow! Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We are all so pleased that you had a wonderful time on your first visit to the South of France. You were very brave to use the pool without the heating, but I hope the views made up for any chill in the water! I truly hope you will choose to stay with us again as it was a pleasure to be able to look after you this time. Haste ye back! Kindest regards Lorraine, Adrian and Nick

Superbly equipped detached property set on a large plot with stunning views across the infinity pool and over acres of vineyards. Very spacious for 4, truly palatial for 2.Very tastefully furnished by someone with taste and flair. The owner really know how to treat her guests well starting with a 5m x 4m kitchen containing every conceivable appliance for the discerning cook or for a more laid back existence, dishwasher, washing machine and quality coffee maker as examples. One is immediately aware of the attention to detail with a Sebatier knife block and an array of quality utensils. A real pleasure to produce meals here.

Outside , a large patio area with an array of furniture and lounges and if the sun is shining then the property basks in it from dawn to dusk. 9m x 5m lounge diner with TV, DVD player and 'digibox'.

Whilst only a 10 minute stroll to the village , a car is a necessity as there is no general store, however a10 mins drive (7kms) brings you to an amazing premium stocked InterMarche store. Not forgetting that you are in the heart of real wine country at unbelievably low prices and lots of places to taste the wares!

The small restaurant in the village does a decent value Plat du Jour but if you want finer dining you will have to travel for 25/30 minutes or more. That said, Pezenas and Beziers are well worth visiting with a wide selection of restaurants and cafes, and there's some great scenery if you head north into the hills.

Beaches are 30 minutes drive with Beziers airport a similar time. Only a very small airport with very few facilities but we were in and out in minutes and it's very convenient.

In summary, a very well maintained, premium quality, property situated in a delightful area of rural France, with excellent customer service from a discerning owner.

A classic example of you get what you pay for and would highly recommend.

From the moment we arrived at the villa, until our extremely reluctant departure, we had the most fantastic time. Lou Cigallou is a beautiful villa with absolutely everything you need for a relaxing holiday, with or without children. The villa is extremely well-appointed, very comfortable and Lorraine could not have made us feel more welcome. Everything we needed was there, you can even watch English TV should you want to. However, we spent most evenings either having a bbq or eating the obligatory french bread and cheese on the terrace, followed by a swim in the beautiful (heated!) infinity pool. Nick and Adrian, who look after the pool, were extremely friendly and very helpful in advising on local restaurants, places to visit, things to do etc. We already miss Lou Cigallou, the views are outstanding, the area is very quiet and peaceful, yet only a short drive should you want to go out to eat or visit a nearby town. We did walk (5 mins) to the Bel Air for supper one evening which was very nice and the bread and croissants from DameJane were wonderfully fresh (and usually still warm!). It's only a half-an-hour's drive to some splendid beaches, we found Serignan-Plage very quiet. All in all, we could not have wished for a more wonderful holiday and cannot wait to return!! We were genuinely disappointed to leave.

Thank you Lorraine for the most amazing time we've had in 20 years!!

From the Owner

This particular part of the Languedoc and Herault, the Languedoc National Park, offers everything that you could wish for. Coming from Scotland the landscape beyond the villa and towards the mountains particularly appealed to us and made us feel at home somehow. Then to be able to also travel quickly to the beach makes it perfect for us, and, we hope, for you too.

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Beaches e.g. Valras Plage, Vias, Serignan Plage, Portiragnes and Rochelongue Plage at Cap d'Agde are within around 35 minutes drive by car. There are many other stunning beaches slightly further afield along the Mediterranean coast.

The use of a car is essential. There is very little public transport and taxis are very expensive. We are well served with airports, Beziers being the closest at around 30 mins away (Ryanair). Montpellier is approximately 65 mins (Ryanair, Easyjet and major airlines), Nimes approximately 90 mins (Ryanair) and Perpignan and Carcassone approximately 80mins (Ryanair). Girona is just over the border in Spain and around 2hr 15mins away.

There are a number of towns and places of interest within easy driving distance. Bedarieux (10 mins drive) is our nearest town with supermarkets and restaurants. Lamalou les Bains (15mins) is a spa town of some renown. Pezenas (20 mins) is bustling with its markets and antique shops. Beziers, on the Canal du Midi, (20 mins) is a good centre for varied shopping. Medieval Carcassone, France's second most visited attraction after the Eiffel Tower, is around 1 1/2 hours drive away.

Further Details:

The village has a small local store selling bread, wine and other delicacies. There is a bar and restaurant, the Bel Air, two minutes walk away. A 24 hour petrol station (self service, payment by credit card) is opposite the Bel Air Restaurant. There is a good selection of bars and restaurants plus supermarkets (with cash machines) and all other shopping within 10 mins drive.

There are many opportunities to sample the wonderful local wines with a number of caves in the village itself. A wine tour business operates out of the village and we are able to facilitate access to the full and half day tours. The local Vigneron also provides talks on Faugeres wines. Cycling remains one of France's top sports and many people visit the area to cycle during their holiday. High quality cycle hire is available from a local company, delivery and collection to/from the villa can be arranged free of charge.

There are lots of outdoor activities such as karting, canyoning, canoeing and treetop climbing all within a short drive. There are a number of excellent restaurants in the immediate area and the Bel Air Restaurant and Bar in Faugeres itself.

Montpellier and Bezier are both good local centres for shopping. Faugeres is a 20 minute drive from the lively medieval town of Pezenas, home of Moliere, with its period architecture and a great choice of restaurants, pavement cafes, art galleries, museums, boutiques and a super Saturday market.

The Canal du Midi, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO is 20 minutes away.
