Guestbook comments from the owner

'Best getaway ever. Maintru is a beautiful hamlet with stunning scenery, perfect for those who like to get out and about for a walk, run or cycle. I would especially recommend La Grange to families as there's loads to keep kids entertained and also to groups of friends who can both enjoy and respect the property as it's a beautifully maintained 18th century farmhouse on well-kept grounds.' 'Fantastic, relaxing week. We've had a great time'. M and K McD, W Yorks

'Charming area of France. Very comfortable stay'. J and M W, Suffolk

'Have thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will be recommending this beautiful house to other Canadians'. JS, Ontario.

Beautiful house - 5 Stars!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at La Grange for a week in May with our 2 young children (16 months and 3) and dog. We had a fantastic time, the house is very clean, well equipped and very comfortable. The enclosed garden is amazing and it was great to be able to turf the kids and dog out and know they would be completely safe as the garden is completely enclosed.

The house is just a couple of minutes from the Avenue Verte, and we made good use of our bicycles, our 3 year old even learnt to ride without her stabilisers whilst we were there.

Colin the owner was around and he made us feel very welcome. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay, in fact we're going again next year for 2 weeks!

La Grange Revisited

  • 5 of 5

La Grange is a delightfully spacious house with a well equipped kitchen, a lovely garden to relax in and a supply of books and DVDs. There's plenty of room for adults and children.

The house is very close to the Avenue Verte for walks and cycling, and just up the road from the village shop at St Vaast which sells croissants, fresh bread, home-cooked meals and much more. There are plenty of good restaurants in the villages round about for eating out, and excellent supermarkets within easy driving distance.

This was our second stay in Maintru. We were able to revisit the marvellous Gertrude Jekyll garden at Varengeville-sur-Mer, in brilliant sunshine this time after previously sloshing around the rose and rhododendron gardens in the rain. Le Bois des Moutiers is one of the many delights of this Seine-Maritime region. But there's so much more...

This is Flaubert country - the little town of Ry with its Galerie Bovary Musee d'Automates is a revelation. There are typical French seaside towns, the port of Dieppe, walks in the Foret d'Eawy (a huge area of beech trees situated between the rivers Varenne and Bethune), châteaus with helpful tours, and, a little more distant: the Bayeux Tapestry to the West, Monet's Garden at Giverny to the East, and Rouen to the South.

It's a great place to stay with much to return for on subsequent visits.

Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Set in a charming area of France, this spacious house and grounds is perfect for visiting local towns, forests and coast or, just put your feet up and enjoy the quiet.

Benefits from large separate kitchen. Toilets on both floors. Clean. Spacious grounds for dog (or children).

No TV, not a problem for us.

If you are keen cyclists the Avenue Verte is ideal and virtually on the doorstep.

Shops just a short drive away. Large supermarkets and English speaking vet at Neufchatel en Bray. Local cheese recommended.

Location

From the Owner

When we first saw the house we were struck by the privacy and seclusion that it offered within such a peaceful rural setting. And yet, because Maintru is only a half hour drive from Dieppe and less than two hours from Calais, it is readily accessible from the UK.

Coast/Beach:

The Cote d'Albâtre with its spectacular chalk cliffs and beaches lies to the west of Dieppe. It is a half hour drive to the nearest beaches at Dieppe, Pourville and Varengeville.

For sailors, Dieppe has a large marina and a trailer/sailer could be parked in the grounds.

Travel:

Maintru is just off the D1, less than twenty miles from Dieppe. There are ferry services between Newhaven and Dieppe, and from Dover to Calais/Dunkirk; there is also the Eurotunnel service from Folkestone. The distance from Calais to Maintru is about 100 miles (1.5 hours).

There are Ryanair flights to Paris Beauvais from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Manchester. Beauvais is just over an hour's drive from Maintru.

We will send you detailed directions when we confirm your booking.

Further Details:

La Grange is set within the Pays de Bray. This is an area that has 'a noticeable feeling of remoteness, with a sparsely inhabited patchwork of flower-filled meadows, verdant valleys and limestone bluffs' (Clare Hargreaves, Normandy).

The house is just 200 metres from the 'Avenue Verte', a 40 km cycle track that was once the railway line between Dieppe and Forges-les-Eaux. The long term plan is to extend the Avenue Verte to connect London with Paris.

Neufchâtel (the home of Normandy's oldest cheese) is 10km to the south. Dieppe with its lively Saturday market and restaurants is 15km to the north; and further afield lie the cathedral cities of Rouen and Amiens, and the spa town of Forges-les-Eaux. Within easy reach are Monet’s house and gardens at Giverny, the charming port of Honfleur, Saint Saens, and Ry - the model for Yonville-L'Abbaye in Madame Bovary.

The surrounding countryside is best explored on foot, by cycle or on horseback. The Foret d'Eawy, a vast tract of beech trees with trails for walking and riding, lies less than 10 miles to the west. (The stables at Pomeroy are recommended). Extending from Dieppe to Fecamp and beyond is the Cote d'Albatre with its pretty seaside villages and spectacular chalk cliffs.

Closer to hand you'll find an abundance of gardens, chateaux and castles. Our favourites are: the Bois des Moutiers, a house designed in the Arts and Crafts style by Edwin Lutyens with gardens designed by Gertrude Jekyll; the Norman castle at Arques-la-Bateille; the sixteenth century Renaissance-style chateau in Mesnieres-en-Bray; and the house and grounds of the Chateau de Miromesnil. A little further away, near Rouen, is Chateau Gaillard. This is a medieval castle built by Richard the Lionheart.

You could, of course, just stay in Maintru, dining al fresco in the secluded garden or simply enjoying the peace and privacy afforded by a location that feels remote, but remains close to home.

Facilities

From the Owner

Our part of Normandy provides the perfect base for a very wide range of holiday activities. It is close to beaches, the delightful port of Dieppe (and its seafood restaurants), chateaux and castles, riding stables, golf courses, the Foret d-Eawy, the historic towns of Amiens and Rouen and, for cyclists, the Avenue Verte. When we're feeling less energetic, the house and gardens provide a sanctuary for reading and relaxation. (My thirteen year old son can be safely left to his own devices, exploring the Avenue Verte and surrounding countryside, and making friends with the local children!)
