About the property

Quiet rural location, close to the coast and ideal for cycling, walking and riding. Discounts for smaller groups.

The farmhouse is set in the hamlet of Maintru, close to the Avenue Verte and the River Bethune. There is a large and secure garden enclosing the farmhouse itself, a half-timbered barn and a converted stable (which is used on occasion by the owner). The house was built in the 1790s in the traditional Norman style with exposed beams and an open fireplace. The ground floor accommodation comprises a large dining kitchen, family bathroom, utility room, two living rooms and a TV/reading area with sofa bed. The upstairs accommodation consists of four bedrooms and a shower room.

Why Colin Raban chose Upper Normandy

When we first saw the house we were struck by the privacy and seclusion that it offered within such a peaceful rural setting. And yet, because Maintru is only a half hour drive from Dieppe and less than two hours from Calais, it is readily accessible from the UK.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Our part of Normandy provides the perfect base for a very wide range of holiday activities. It is close to beaches, the delightful port of Dieppe (and its seafood restaurants), chateaux and castles, riding stables, golf courses, the Foret d-Eawy, the historic towns of Amiens and Rouen and, for cyclists, the Avenue Verte.

When we're feeling less energetic, the house and gardens provide a sanctuary for reading and relaxation. (My thirteen year old son can be safely left to his own devices, exploring the Avenue Verte and surrounding countryside, and making friends with the local children!)

Beautiful house - 5 Stars!

We stayed at La Grange for a week in May with our 2 young children (16 months and 3) and dog. We had a fantastic time, the house is very clean, well equipped and very comfortable. The enclosed garden is amazing and it was great to be able to turf the kids and dog out and know they would be completely safe as the garden is completely enclosed.

The house is just a couple of minutes from the Avenue Verte, and we made good use of our bicycles, our 3 year old even learnt to ride without her stabilisers whilst we were there.

Colin the owner was around and he made us feel very welcome. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay, in fact we're going again next year for 2 weeks!

La Grange Revisited

La Grange is a delightfully spacious house with a well equipped kitchen, a lovely garden to relax in and a supply of books and DVDs. There's plenty of room for adults and children.

The house is very close to the Avenue Verte for walks and cycling, and just up the road from the village shop at St Vaast which sells croissants, fresh bread, home-cooked meals and much more. There are plenty of good restaurants in the villages round about for eating out, and excellent supermarkets within easy driving distance.

This was our second stay in Maintru. We were able to revisit the marvellous Gertrude Jekyll garden at Varengeville-sur-Mer, in brilliant sunshine this time after previously sloshing around the rose and rhododendron gardens in the rain. Le Bois des Moutiers is one of the many delights of this Seine-Maritime region. But there's so much more...

This is Flaubert country - the little town of Ry with its Galerie Bovary Musee d'Automates is a revelation. There are typical French seaside towns, the port of Dieppe, walks in the Foret d'Eawy (a huge area of beech trees situated between the rivers Varenne and Bethune), châteaus with helpful tours, and, a little more distant: the Bayeux Tapestry to the West, Monet's Garden at Giverny to the East, and Rouen to the South.

It's a great place to stay with much to return for on subsequent visits.

Relaxing

Set in a charming area of France, this spacious house and grounds is perfect for visiting local towns, forests and coast or, just put your feet up and enjoy the quiet.

Benefits from large separate kitchen. Toilets on both floors. Clean. Spacious grounds for dog (or children).

No TV, not a problem for us.

If you are keen cyclists the Avenue Verte is ideal and virtually on the doorstep.

Shops just a short drive away. Large supermarkets and English speaking vet at Neufchatel en Bray. Local cheese recommended.

Outside: The house shares its 3,500 square metre grounds with a traditional Norman half-timbered barn and a converted stable. The garden with its lawns and wooded areas is secure and child-friendly. A barbecue is provided and there is a private patio with garden furniture. Various outside games, including croquet, are available. Utility Room: Fridge/freezer, washing machine, iron and ironing board, cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaner. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen is included. The house is cleaned prior to the arrival of guests. Additional cleaning services and changes of linen can be provided on request and for a small extra charge. Other: Off the larger of the two living rooms there is a reading/TV area with a collection of books, games and DVDs for use by guests. This area can be screened off to serve as a ground floor bedroom.
