About danielle

I live in England with my partner and our 5 children and 2 dogs. I previously lived in South West France and am a complete sun worshipper whereas my partner lived in America and is an avid skier and lover of snow. Both families love the outdoors. Here in the pyrenees the weather is a perfect mix for the two of us and enables the children to experience two different amazing seasons. Activities include: skiing, cycling, white water rafting, canoeing, swimming, trekking, fishing and of course sunbathing ,eating and drinking the delicious local wines. The area is truly stunning and the people are genuinely friendly. We have been made to feel very welcome here.

danielle purchased this house in 2011

Why danielle chose Préchac

Our reasons for buying in the area were twofold. Firstly, we were excited about the excellent yet affordable skiing on offer and secondly having a place in the summer where we can relax and explore one of Europe's great unspoilt area's of natural beauty, the French Pyrenees. Surrounded by breathtaking mountains, with 5 ski resorts within 20-40mins drive, yet only 1hr 30mins from the stunning Cote Savage. The local restaurants, wine and friendly locals were other persuasive factors as well as the weather, remember this is the South of France and summer is hot.

What makes this house unique

You can relax and unwind: read, sunbathe, eat, talk and all with the mountains in the background and the sound of the mountain stream in the garden. Or you can be active and and there's things for everyone to do!

Super property. All we needed there. Loads of space so ideal for a party of six adults and five children. Spectacular views, especially from the balcony. Really delighted we chose to go there. Lots of things to do nearby and further away

Excellent property perfect for family getaway

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous house in beautiful rural setting. We stayed for a week with 13 people ranging in age from 6 to 80 and there was something to suit everyone. The property itself is perfect in terms of the facilities it offers and its proximity to Argeles Gazost and the mountains. The table tennis table and play pool were used every day and we also used some of the bicycles to ride to Argeles and Lourdes.

The children loved the luge in the mountains and swimming pool in Argeles. As a family, we also enjoyed trips to the market in Argeles (fantastic!), the cable car and chair lift at Cauterets, Lourdes and San Sebastian (beautiful city but a longer road trip than we expected).

We would all unanimously recommend this property and area. Five stars definitely!

Great location good food and fantastic property

  • 5 of 5

We had never been on a holiday to the mountains before and were a bit apprehensive but couldn’t recommend it more! It’s real France with great food, friendly people and the house worked out great for us. It’s got all mod cons, loads of space, and a couple of really nice local restaurants you can walk to, or lots within a short drive. The scenery is spectacular, …...we’ll be back! Possibly even skiing next time.

Fantastic venue for cycling enthusiasts!

  • 5 of 5

We have just got back from spending two fantastic weeks in Prechac and would highly recommend both the house and location for cycling enthusiasts and families with children aged 10+. The house is brilliantly equipped and kept all three of our boys entertained (when we were not out and about exploring!), with the pool table, table tennis table, small swimming pool and cinema style/projector TV.....not to mention the full Sky package that was accessible via the TV in the lounge. The garage was ideal for storing our road bikes safely, and the local climbs were a cyclists dream......we could get to most of the iconic TdF climbs by cycling directly from the house! Whilst the house is in a private rural location, there were lots of local amenities only a few minutes drive away in Argeles-Gazost....and there were also two great restaurants that we were able to walk to....the first being Le Petit Couassert in Beaucens, which was 10-15 mins walk away (we went twice it was so good......the second time being the last night of our stay), and Auberge Le Bouic in Ayros- Arbouix (on the left just as you start the ascent to Hautacam). On the whole, the weather was glorious however being our first trip to the mountains we were not quite prepared for the swings in temperature......however the amazing fondue we had in Cauterets (Le Brasero) on one of our cooler days, more than made up for it! Would definitely consider revisiting!

Great summer holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place to unwind, a great base for exploring the surrounding Pyrenees and a cycling dream (it even encouraged me on to a bike for the first time in a while).

The house gave us all plenty of space and comfort. Downstairs was the kids hangout with a pool table and cinema like feel of the projection TV with surround sound. Upstairs had a very comfortable and spacious kitchen/dining area and lounge. My favorite place was the large balcony with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the sound of the nearby river. The kids played lots in the pool and the balcony was also a relaxing spot to keep an eye on them.

The local town is only a 5 minute drive away. The kids loved the town pool with the slides. It is in a beautiful setting and seems to be well liked by the locals too. There is a family ticket which gets you access to the pool 4 times as well as 4 trips on the luge up at Hautacam. Speaking of Hautcam, do not miss Isaby's Restaurant on the way to Hautcam (about halfway up on the right side sign posted with a tabac/cafe sign). It is a small family run restaurant with fantastic, simple local food served family style. It was only Euros 15 for 5 courses.

There are many great walks in the surrounding mountains. We especially loved Cauterets and visited their twice. Once for a great mountain hike up to Lac de Gaube (for those more limited with their walking, there are chair lifts up to the top) and again for the fantastic thermal baths. Another favorite activity in Prechac was the Chloro'Fil Parc (Go Ape type place) which both kids and adults loved.

There really is something for everyone. We will definitely be back.

Special interest holidays:

Cycling is a big part of the area, often the Tour de France goes right past the front door. For the enthusiastic road biker there are too many Cols to name! and for those that like a challenge, the ski slopes turn into mountain bike trails during the warmer months.

Of special interest is the shrine of Lourdes 20 mins away.

The cote savage, the Atlantic coast is 1hr 30mins drive. Fabulous clean beaches and plenty of surfing, wonderful Basque cuisine, some of the finest in the world. Biarritz, St jean de Luz and Hondaribia to name but a few.

It is an 11hr drive from Calais to the house but there are plenty of beautiful places to stay overnight and break the journey up. Lourdes is the nearest airport(20 mins)(Ryan Air). Toulouse has several daily flights with Easy Jet from Gatwick all year round(2hrs) as does Bordeaux with Easy Jet and BA (2hrs 30mins)

Pau is 45 mins drive with flights from London city. During the warmer months Easy jet flies into Biarritz(1hr 30 mins)

Argeles Gazost 5 mins by car (walk-able)

Lourdes 20 mins by car

Pau 45 mins by car

Toulouse 2hrs by car

Biarritz 1hr 30 mins by car

Further Details:

Prechac is 5 mins from Argeles-Gazost with many shops, restaurants and bars. Every Tuesday throughout the year is an organic market with lots of vendors selling local produce. There is a fabulous spa for all the family and also a casino/cinema set in the grounds of the picturesque town park. Tarbes, only 30 mins away, is the capital of the region with good shopping and an organic market every Thursday as well as its own great park. Lourdes is a major tourist attraction and has a great range of shops and restaurants, 20 mins by car. The candle lit procession to the shrine is a must for all to see.

Cauterets is a spa town in the mountains, 20 mins away, full of charm and history, with some fabulous restaurants and a great spa.

Pau is a lovely town with grace and elegance, 45 mins, home to some wonderful tourist attractions such as the château, the musee de beaux arts and the classic grand prix.

To the North, jazz in Marciac is well worth a visit, 1 hr. This is a major festival that runs through July and August an has some of the greatest jazz and blues artists performing in the heart of a medieval town.

The mountains themselves are worth visiting all year round. In winter, skiing both alpine and nordic as well as snowboarding. In the spring and summer, walking, climbing, moutain biking, fishing and many other activities are to be had. Pont D'Espagne show cases some breathtaking scenery, with waterfalls lakes and vistas vying for the limelight. A trip to the 2700m Pic de Midi observatory is well worth a visit to take in the great panoramas on displays.

Restaurants abound with Michelin star quality to rustic bistro, you should use the Michelin guide to route out the best. Our 2 favourites are within walking distance of the house.
