About the property

Chateau Gite in Charras, Nr. Angouleme, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France - Peaceful Location In The Walled Grounds Of A Chateau Estate In Unspoilt Rolling Countryside

Set within the walled grounds of the 1748 Chateau de Charras, L’Orangerie was originally used for fruit ripening. It has been sympathetically renovated with many of the original features retained and is now divided in two: 'La Grande' and 'La Petite'. Offering spacious open-plan living with fantastic panoramic views across the Charente/Dordogne countryside, La Petite has 2 bedrooms and sleeps 4 guests. The spectacular 13-acre grounds of the Château are yours to explore, with sweeping views, spacious lawns, tree-lined avenues, stone staircases, balustrades and orchards, providing a genuinely unique setting and sense of history. Within the grounds there is a heated swimming pool with terrace and sun loungers, as well as two tennis courts - one resurfaced 2017.

This delightful region, renowned for its fields of sunflowers, boasts beautiful, unspoilt countryside, while the small village of Charras offers a friendly general store/post office and boulangerie selling freshly baked bread and pastries.

About Milly Goddard

I live in Wiltshire, UK.

Milly Goddard purchased this house in 2013

Why Milly Goddard chose Charras

I was very taken with the peace and quiet of the Charente region south of Angouleme, and stumbled upon the Chateau de Charras. La Petite Orangerie is tucked away in the gardens, and though it shares the grounds with 20 other gites it never feels too busy.

What makes this house unique

The grounds are really lovely, and maintained to a very good standard. The pool is heated - a rarity in the area. And it's all looked after in my absence too. The views are stunning and the surrounding Foret d'Horte is great for walking or mountain-biking. There is a social side to staying at Chateau de Charras, with many other outbuildings also being converted into delightful gites, so if you want company, there's always someone around.

Guestbook comments from the owner

" The stay in the orangery of the castle of Charras is exeptional ! Here you can joyfully enjoy nature and the beautiful view from the castle grounds . The garden and orchard around the castle is accessible and you can use freely . The pool has been renewed this year and is very just . Charras is located on the border between the Charente and Perigord Vert. Within an hour drive you can visit the most special places in both regions such as Brantôme , Bourdeilles, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne . An absolute must! "

Notes on accommodation: La Petite Orangerie is situated in a very quiet part of the Chateau estate. It has exposed stonework with wooden floors and beams. Bedrooms are equipped with good quality French wooden furniture and fans for hot nights in the summer months. A high chair is provided and a cot is available on request. The Château offers a great environment for families but it's also an excellent base for couples looking to explore traditional rural France in the beautiful Charente region. Upon arrival you will be met by our local (English) host who will introduce you to La Petite Orangerie and answer any questions you may have. A welcome pack of fresh bread, butter, cheese and wine will await you so you can begin enjoying French life without delay! Those wishing to holiday with other families and friends might like to consider renting an additional property on the Chateau estate - La Grande Orangerie next door would be especially convenient (See Owners Direct Property Ref. FR19419). Outside: French doors open to a private patio area and lawn, with patio furniture and a charcoal barbecue. The extensive Château grounds provide space for children to play and explore in a safe enclosed environment, while adults will appreciate the tranquillity of the lovely gardens. There is a large heated swimming pool in a secure walled area, with sun loungers and sun terrace, a superb tennis court (resurfaced 2017), a table tennis table, and a mature orchard. The 13-hectare grounds and facilities are shared with other guests and owners at the Château. The Chateau is the starting point for several circular walking routes, within the lovely Foret d'Horte, with its mapped walks and trails - ideal for ramblers and off-road cyclists. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cleaning, electricity, water, linen and towels (except swimming towels) are included. A mid-stay clean is offered for two week stays.

Beautiful spot, cosy accommodation, friendly folk

  • 5 of 5

At Easter, my partner and I decided to take pot luck and explore an area of France south of Angouleme that we didn’t know, without breaking the bank. We weren’t quite sure what to expect from La Petite Orangerie, but it turned out to be an ideal base from which to tootle about the region. As it was holiday time, there were 20 or so staying in the chateau’s various properties, and while you could easily avoid them if you didn’t want to socialise, we were invited by Mark and Lorraine, the Irish couple who look after the chateau’s grounds, to join in a communal barbecue and associated jollities. I enjoyed the egg-throwing contest, but thought my knees were a bit too creaky for touch rugby…

The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, with all the mod cons you’d expect, though we didn’t do much cooking, preferring to pig out at some of the excellent restaurants within striking distance (owner Milly has a selection of suggestions pinned to her corkboard). Angouleme itself is a historic town well worth a visit, and other places we enjoyed were Aubterre sur Dronne, with its stunning underground church carved into the limestone, the bustling market at Villebois-Lavalette, and the picture-postcard prettiness of Brantome over the border into Dordogneshire, though you’ll hear more English than French spoken there.

Outside the holiday season I guess it’s pretty quiet, and none the worse for that if this is what you’re looking for, while during the summer holidays I imagine the pool and tennis court come into their own; and if Easter’s anything to go by, children won’t be short of playmates. We’ll definitely be back, unless they make touch rugby compulsory.

A Fabulous Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Two of us stayed at La Petite Orangerie for an extended weekend. It was the nicest gite we have stayed in for years. it is set in the extensive grounds of the chateau and a short stroll across the lawn takes you to the well maintained tennis court and swimming pool where there are several sun loungers for use by the guests. There is an orchard with fruit that you are welcome to pick from the trees and a table tennis table. The gite itself is well maintained, clean and comfortable. It has the use of the extensive chateau grounds and also has a smaller private garden. We loved the peace and quiet and also the pretty views from the dining room window. We appreciated the under floor heating when the weather changed.

While we were there we visited Angouleme where we looked round the cathedral and later ate at Le Terminus which was excellent. Another great place to visit is Aubeterre sur Drone - about 45 minutes away - where we saw a cathedral that was built into the rock. There are several attractive villages nearby that have farmer's markets and lots of little cafes.

I would certainly recommend La Petite Orangerie for a great holiday.

Very nice gite in an impressive setting.

  • 4 of 5

The gite is part of a Chateau dating from 1722 and has private secure grounds in which to wander or just relax. There is also a pool and tennis courts.

The gite had all we needed including a BBQ. It was clean and well maintained.

We would certainly go back as there are also lots of sights to see within the area.

Charming and homely

  • 5 of 5

Set in a quiet corner in the grounds of Chateau de Charras la Petite Orangerie is a little more private than some of the apartments. The piece of grass at the front is ample to spread out and enjoy outdoor eating without being over-looked.

The apartment is charming and homely, the rooms perfectly comfortable for us and our two children. We have now had three summer holidays here. The apartment is the perfect informal base to completely relax and enjoy the old-world charm that makes the Chateau de Charras so special. There are plenty of books, games and DVDs for the odd wet afternoon.

We really enjoy the pool, it's big enough for a bit of a swim and for the kids to play. Plenty of loungers to sit back in. The water is cold which is perfect for a very hot day.

The bakery and shop in Charras provide fresh bread and daily convenience and the chance for a chat with one or two locals. The pace of life in this part of France is wonderfully calm and we really enjoy the no pressure lifestyle here.

The owners are helpful and efficient.

Owner's Response: Many thanks indeed for your positive comments. I'm delighted you enjoy your visits and am thrilled that you have booked to come again next summer. A point for others viewing this site: the pool is actually heated but in high season is kept cool and refreshing.
