Overview

Property

Updated: 21-Nov-2016
Chateau Gite in Charras, Nr. Angouleme, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France - Peaceful Location In The Walled Grounds Of A Chateau Estate In Unspoilt Rolling Countryside

Set within the walled grounds of the 1748 Chateau de Charras, L’Orangerie was originally used for fruit ripening. It has been sympathetically renovated with many of the original features retained and is now divided in two: 'La Grande' and 'La Petite'. Offering spacious open-plan living with fantastic panoramic views across the Charente/Dordogne countryside, La Petite has 2 bedrooms and sleeps 4 guests. The spectacular 13-acre grounds of the Château are yours to explore, with sweeping views, spacious lawns, tree-lined avenues, stone staircases, balustrades and orchards, providing a genuinely unique setting and sense of history. Within the grounds there is a heated swimming pool with terrace and sun loungers, as well as two tennis courts.

This delightful region, renowned for its fields of sunflowers, boasts beautiful, unspoilt countryside, while the small village of Charras offers a friendly general store/post office and boulangerie selling freshly baked bread and pastries.

Guestbook comments from the owner

" The stay in the orangery of the castle of Charras is exeptional ! Here you can joyfully enjoy nature and the beautiful view from the castle grounds . The garden and orchard around the castle is accessible and you can use freely . The pool has been renewed this year and is very just . Charras is located on the border between the Charente and Perigord Vert. Within an hour drive you can visit the most special places in both regions such as Brantôme , Bourdeilles, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne . An absolute must! "

Beautiful, tranquil place steeped in history

  • 5 of 5

Charras is a really special place, with spectacular grounds. The historic landscaped gardens remain in intact with lovely tree lined avenues which are a joy to walk around. There are endless things to do, with a lovely swimming pool, tennis courts, table tennis and picturesque orchards. It would suit someone who either wanted a relaxing retreat or to use as a base to see many nearby beautiful towns and sites. Lorraine and Mark, who maintain the grounds could not be more helpful or knowledgeable and really helped make sure everything ran smoothly with our stay.

perfectly well equiped, clean and sapcious

  • 5 of 5

My wife, six year old daughter and I had a wonderful time at la petite orangerie in Charras. We found everything to be just as described with the gite and its surroundings, the gite itself was clean and comfortable, the grounds were sprawling and the pool was perfect.

We spent one week at la petite orangerie but could quite have easily spent more time there, as it's hard to balance staying in and relaxing at the chateaux or going out to explore the beautiful countryside. When we did stay in we really appreciated the peace and quiet of the location and the village. You could walk around the grounds and enjoy the setting without being disturbed, although there were people around if you wanted some company, all of which (when we stayed) were fantastically friendly. When we were at the chateaux, around the pool in the afternoons was the sociable time when most people would be at the pool after a hot day out and about. This was great for us as it gave our girl the time to play with other children and us some time to relax (we would often cut short our day trip to get back for the afternoons). The people staying and living in the other gites of the chateaux were very welcoming and helpful, it’s great to get some local knowledge of where to visit and dine out (thank you Kate for organising our night out at Lavallette).

We were also very impressed with Angouleme which has some great architecture, some nice bars and restaurants; and a brilliant waterpark (which is a mixture of leisure centre and waterpark and although not as big as some waterparks it was a good fun day out).

All in all we loved our time in la petite orangerie and would love to return, we would also thoroughly recommend it to others. 

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at La Petite Orangerie.

Everything was perfect: the weather, the view, the grounds, the pool and the tennis. Such a peaceful and friendly atmosphere. Everyone was very helpful. Jo, the Manager, was great. The grounds are beautifully maintained by Lorraine and Mark.

Such a lovely house, so nicely decorated and extremely well-equipped. Comfortable beds with plenty of good quality sheets and towels.

There is so much space, that even though all the rentals were occupied, there was room for everyone and we always found a quiet time at the pool and played tennis every day.

Lovely relaxed part of France with the beautiful little towns of Brantôme and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne within 45 mins' drive. The larger town of Angoulême (30 mins aways) not to be missed either. Packed with history and plenty of great restaurants.

Looking forward to returning next year.

Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

We really loved this holiday home. It's set in the grounds of a chateau with great far reaching views, there's a swimming pool and tennis courts, and it's all in a village with a boulangerie and a small shop.

The house itself is clean and very comfortable. It has plenty of living space and a well fitted modern kitchen. The owner has provided plenty of plates, cups, glasses etc (not the usual 1 per person) so you are not continually having to wash up just put it all in the dishwasher!

There are indoor and outdoor eating areas and lots of outside chairs and loungers.

We didn't have to travel far to see pretty villages, interesting chateaux and the most wonderful countryside.

I would thoroughly recommend this for a lovely relaxing holiday.

Just perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect! First trip with our new little one, we flew to Limoges (about 1h30m away from the gite, very easy) and rented a little car. High chair and travel cot were ready and waiting, everything spotless and very comfortable with lots of room to spare. The kitchen was especially good for our needs. The weather has been fantastic so we spent loads of time in the grounds of the château on the grass and wondering around between the trees, we only wish we could have gone in the swimming pool, it looks wonderful. Lots to do while out and about, I recommend the comic book museum in Angouleme. Overall, as I have said, perfect. We will be coming back so see you soon.

Location

From the Owner

I was very taken with the peace and quiet of the Charente region south of Angouleme, and stumbled upon the Chateau de Charras. La Petite Orangerie is tucked away in the gardens, and though it shares the grounds with 20 other gites it never feels too busy.

Further Details:

With 2,400 sunshine hours a year this is the hottest and sunniest part of the Atlantic coastal area. You will wake up to see the most beautiful sunrise from your window and with no light pollution you will look up at night to see an amazing star-filled sky.

There is something for everyone in the region, with plenty of interesting places to visit.

For children, there are lakes and beaches with pedaloes and canoeing. Centre Nautilis, a large aquatic leisure centre, has pools, many water slides, a wave pool and rapids. Aventure Parc has zip-wires, rope bridges, rope ladders and monkey bridges.

For adults, there are plenty of chateaux, museums, cognac distilleries, churches and pretty French towns to visit. There are some fabulous restaurants in the area, while traditional markets offer local produce and other regional gastronomic delights.

For all ages, there are ample opportunities for cycling or rambling in the Foret d’Horte and surrounding area.

After your day out you return to the private tranquillity of the Chateau for a dip in the pool, a game of tennis, or simply to unwind with a chilled glass of wine in one hand and a good book in the other - bliss!

We are sure that you will enjoy the chateau estate, and the region with its many places of interest. It really is a gem in a beautiful, unspoilt part of France.

Facilities

From the Owner

The grounds are really lovely, and maintained to a very good standard. The pool is heated - a rarity in the area. And it's all looked after in my absence too. The views are stunning and the surrounding Foret d'Horte is great for walking or mountain-biking. There is a social side to staying at Chateau de Charras, with many other outbuildings also being converted into delightful gites, so if you want company, there's always someone around.

Bedrooms are equipped with high-quality French wooden furniture and fans for hot nights in the summer months. A high chair is provided and a cot is available on request. The Château offers a great environment for families but it's also an excellent base for couples looking to explore traditional rural France in the beautiful Charente region. Upon arrival you will be met by our local (English) host who will introduce you to La Petite Orangerie and answer any questions you may have. A welcome pack of fresh bread, butter, cheese and wine will await you so you can begin enjoying French life without delay! Those wishing to holiday with other families and friends might like to consider renting an additional property on the Chateau estate - La Grande Orangerie next door would be especially convenient (See Owners Direct Property Ref. FR19419). Outside: French doors open to a private patio area and lawn, with patio furniture and a charcoal barbecue. The extensive Château grounds provide space for children to play and explore in a safe enclosed environment, while adults will appreciate the tranquillity of the lovely gardens. There is a large heated swimming pool in a secure walled area, with sun loungers and sun terrace, in addition to a tennis court (not Wimbledon standard!) a table tennis table, and a mature orchard. The 13-hectare grounds and facilities are shared with other guests and owners at the Château. The Chateau is the starting point for several circular walking routes, within the lovely Foret d'Horte, with its mapped walks and trails - ideal for ramblers and off-road cyclists. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Cleaning, electricity, water, linen and towels (except swimming towels) are included. A mid-stay clean is offered for two week stays.
