About Doreen Whitehead

We moved here from Yorkshire in 2011 after purchasing the property the year before. We wanted a slower pace of life and as we both love the countryside this area fitted the bill, with lovely scenery on our doorstep and beautiful lakes a short distance away.

It has taken us two years to fully renovate the property which consists of 2 cottages and a barn and have tried to retain as many original features as possible. We have undertaken all the work ourselves (apart from the electrics) and became "regulars" at the local DIY store. The garden which had been untouched for years was overgrown with nettles and brambles but now features flower beds and a vegetable plot which supplies us with an abundance of fruit and vegetables

Doreen Whitehead purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Doreen Whitehead chose Genouillac

We wanted a peaceful location in a rural setting yet close to a small town. The surrounding area is beautiful with rolling hills, green valleys, churches and chateaux. The sunsets are amazing often producing vibrant colours followed by starry skies.

There are miles of walks along country lanes, swimming lakes with beaches, bars and restaurants

What makes this cottage unique

The property benefits from being in a small hamlet yet a couple of minutes drive away from the small town of Genouillac with all its amenities, including two boulangeries where you can pick up fresh bread, crossiants, etc. There is also a butchers, pharmacy, restaurant and post office.

The owners garden is for guests use so whether you just want to relax on one of the loungers or sit in the shade at the bottom of the garden with a good book,or watch the sun go down with a glass of wine it is all here for you.

Absolutely Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left Dot and Alan were just the most perfect hosts, we had such a lovely time in the gite, which may we say was absolutely perfect in every way! In just a few days we used their beautiful home as a base to explore the Creuse and surrounding countryside which is stunning. We are hoping to return very soon, but this time we are going to make sure that it will be a longer stay...

A lovely Gite , we were very well looked after by Alan and Doreen

  • 5 of 5

This was a great base to use whilst we were looking at properties in Le Creuse and Haute Vienne . We stayed during a very cold spell and Dot and Alan made sure we were lovely and warm with plentiful supply of wood for the wood burner .

Lots of great places to visit and if you like walking and cycling, this is a great Gite to base yourselves.

A peaceful, rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at 'the old bread oven' to a lovely warm welcome including a welcome basket full of delicious goodies! The gite itself is really well equipped with lots of thoughtful touches and the owners, Alan and Dot, could not have been more generous and helpful during our stay. The garden is beautiful with a variety of shady places to sit and relax. There are lots of pretty French villages close by in the surrounding area with places to eat and walk. We really enjoyed our stay, it is a perfect place to relax.

A perfect place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing week at the gite. We couldn't have asked for more. The gite had everything that we needed and was the perfect place to stay. The location is fantastic for exploring the three lakes and relaxing in a beautiful area of France. Dot and Alan were very welcoming and helpful in ensuring that we had everything we needed to have an amazing weeks holiday. They provided us with everything (& more) that we needed for our little one which made our stay incredibly easy and comfortable. We would highly recommend staying here and are already planning our return visit:)
