About Mrs May Bull

Nick has been making cider at The Old Vicarage since he was a small boy and I married into the family and together we have used our home as a country guest house to welcome guests for many years. We have now had the opportunity to renovate the stables to add self catering accommodation. We have always loved living in this tranquil and beautiful place and have always wanted to share it with others. Nick has a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience about cider making, the geology and history of the Forest of Dean and is very happy to spend time talking with guests. I was a teacher but am now involved with Severn Cider and my love is growing our vegetables, herbs and flowers, natural dyeing and our local vibrant church. We both believe in and enjoy cooking with local whole food.

Mrs May Bull purchased this house in 1950

Why Mrs May Bull chose Awre

This Grade 2 listed property was bought by Nick's father, as a retired air line pilot as a new venture - it was in a poor condition and came with a market garden. Since then there has been continual renovation with the vision of maintaining all the original features of the property whilst enhancing the comfort. We have stayed here because we love the peace, tranquility amazing skyscapes and the diversity in flora, fauna, bird life and habitat: being close to the wetlands of the River Severn, surrounded by the Cotswolds on the south east side and the River Wye and Forest of Dean on the north west. Our peace and uninterrupted views are guaranteed by the village of Awre being in the centre of the huge meander of the River Severn.

What makes this house unique

The Old Vicarage has the advantage that whilst being totally rural; three miles from the main road, it is actually very easy to access a whole range of places within a thirty minute radius. Groups staying here can diversify between those that want to be outdoors and active to those who want to relax and be quiet or for others who want to be creative with photography, writing, bird watching, painting or just soak up the atmosphere or experience God's presence: perfect for christian groups.

In addition there is the whole cider experience for those who are interested, as our cider is both made and sold here and for that reason we are a licensed premises. Tasting sessions can be arranged. When booking please let us know if you would like to do some cider tasting.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Vicarage and Stables are joined by brick but access is across a small courtyard (see photo). The kitchen and main lounge are in the Stables. It is best for small children to sleep in the Stables, in a twin room, which is next to a double ensuite, ideal for parents. If you have more than two young children, this property may not be suitable. However it can work if you have more than two young children: 1. if you have older children with them sleeping in the Vicarage 2.After children have gone to bed, the adults use the lounge in the Vicarage (no TV) Then it is best if all small children sleep in the Vicarage with parents. This usually means parents eating early with children in Stable. There is a dining room in the Vicarage for adult meals, if you do want to eat after the children have gone to bed. Babies in cots are fine in the Vicarage as you can hear them in the Stables on a baby monitor. Hope this helps!

Notes on accommodation: In the Stables there is a superb upstairs lounge and downstairs a huge kitchen, diner with conservatory both look out on to the gardens and meadows leading to the River Severn. The property is 300 years old and comprises of both the main house and adjoining stables, which have been recently renovated to maintain the character of the property whilst creating comfort and timelessness. The owners live in the main house, but guests have their own separate entrance and accommodation. Outside: The Old Vicarage is set within 4 acres of mature gardens and cider orchard. There is also a cider house, where cider is made from September to Christmas. The stables has its own private garden and patio and there is a huge BBQ area under mature oak trees. The main house shares a courtyard with the stables where one can sit and enjoy the evening sun and may be a glass of cider or any other drink as the property has a license. Guests of course can bring their own! The house is south facing with views from south, east and west. There are swings for children, space to play ball games and trees to make dens. There is outdoor furniture on each side of the house. Utility Room: Large washing machine, tumble drier, hanging space for outdoor clothes and plenty of space for out door shoes. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: High quality towels and linen are included. Normally the property is cleaned for arrival. If you would like maid service during your stay please let us know. Other: The conservatory has lovely views and opens out into the huge garden. There is an additional drawing room with open fire in the main house. There is a bbq area under the canopy of mature oak trees, which keep you warm and dry from evening dew.

Delightful location but needs more clarity

  • 4 of 5

The Old Vicarage is indeed a beautiful and timeless property set in a gorgeous garden with endless places to enjoy. But the actually property is just behind in The Stables - still really lovely and beautifully positioned - which has the living areas and two bedrooms, and then there are some bedrooms in the Old Vicarage. May and Nick who are so lovely and helpful, live in the Old Vicarage and the bedrooms in the house are truly special. The cider is something special too! The 'BBQ' is actually a fire-pit with a cooking plate so although it would have been an experience to cook on it we decided to give it a miss.

Very enjoyable stay

  • 4 of 5

Our three generation family group stayed here over the Easter period - we all appreciated the spacious accommodation in The Stables and the quiet rural location. We did not have to go far to visit some good attractions - our favourite was Puzzlewood and we also enjoyed Clearwell Caves and Perrygrove - would definitely recommend.

A small piece of perfection

  • 5 of 5

My job every year is to find a large house for our party in a different part of the U.K. Came across this house. booked and waited to arrive. No fears of disappointment. Nick and May are a wonderful couple who have opened up their house to visitors. It is an old house, so don't expect perfection, but it is very comfotable, well equipped and able to handle our group of 11 with ease. The location is perfect for exploring the area and there is so much to do and see that a week wasn't enough. I could ramble on for ages, but I really do not think you would be disappointed if you stayed there. Just don't spoil the magic of the place please
