Updated: 03-Nov-2016
House in Labrespy, Tarn, Midi-Pyrenees, France - Peaceful Location, Beautiful Views, 2km from a Lake (swim / sand) inc Leisure And Eating Facilities

Nestled in the 'Montagne Noir', Labrespy is just 3 miles from the market town of Mazamet, 40 minutes from the medieval city of Carcassonne and 1 hr 10 mins from Toulouse. But it feels like a million miles from anywhere. The property is a 200 year old village house - beautifully restored and modernised - sitting on the slope of a mountain with a private garden, surrounded by old stone walls and little alleyways into the village. The village has a shop which sells virtually everything including your bread for the morning. This is just down one of the alleyways so you can send the children on shopping trips. The garden is up some cobbled steps opposite the front door and comprises 1/2 an acre of private garden with swing seats and stunning views. Perfect for reading, BBQs, playing games and watching the sun set. If you feel the urge it is a wonderful setting to erect a tent and sleep outdoors for a few nights. This is a holiday setting which completely takes you away from busy, frenetic and sometimes stressful everyday life. It is where you can completely relax, absorb the countryside and mountain air and the gentle village life of horses, donkeys, vegetable gardens and a slower pace of family village life. The house can sleep a maximum of 10. But we can accommodate as few as 2 people and dogs welcome! Enquire about the reduced price for smaller parties...

delightful weeks holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in Labrespy! The house is really charming, particularly sitting at the table out the front of the house. Really perfect there. There's also a garden with comfy seats looking across the picturesque valley. And the rooms themselves are all clean and clearly had thought put into them.

Debbie was friendly and helpful in advance. And the guidance notes when we arrived were really comprehensive so any questions were already answered. Practically it was useful staying in a 'lived in' house because there was everything you'd need (e.g. washing machine, games for the beach, books etc etc).

The house is close to a lovely lake for swimming 5 min drive away (or a good half hour walk - downhill on the way home! - I found cycling there was nicest) and you can drive to other lakes, rivers, swimming pools and the sea for other swimming. The nicest place to swim was in Lagrasse - a reasonable drive but absolutely perfect. The house is up in the hills so perfect if you prefer it a bit cooler than on the flat (still very hot!) and like to walk through the forests, do some lake swimming, cycle the hills etc.

Recommended!

Brilliant house to use as a base!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this house for two weeks. We were a group of 7 made up of 2 young children and 5 adults, of whom 3 are retired.

It was perfect! The house is very comfortably furnished. There is enough space for everyone to relax and it has everything you need to have a great holiday. We even prepared (our version of) Cassoulet ( a local dish) using the small oven, so it is well equipped for cooking too. There is also a big range oven but we did not need to use it. The rooms and beds are comfortable and the kids loved sleeping in the loft, the room has been very cleverly designed, making it very appealing to kids. The views from the windows are fantastic, you really feel like you're in a different world: mountains, narrow lanes, big vegetable gardens, etc! The house is full of character and was clean and tidy. We charged all our electronic devices, boiled the kettle, showered, cooked food and never found the electricity or water supplies to be a problem, in fact it added to the charm.

There is a tiny but useful play frame 50m from the house as well as the little shop, selling a huge variety of stuff. They were only open in the morning and on certain days. Stock up on Milk, as you can't get fresh milk from Saturday to Tuesday very easily. Lots of places were shut on Sundays and Mondays.

We loved the area too. We weren't sure at first where to find the walks, but managed to figure it out in our second week. The walk to the lake through the woods, was lovely. The kids had a fantastic time swimming in the lake, it's very safe and never got too busy. The café there is a little expensive, but has easy meals and ice cream for the kids. We also found the pretty walk to Hautpool, which is truly a lovely place to visit. The village tavern in Hautpool has stunning views across to Mazamet. Mazamet is a lovely town, big enough with everything we needed. It has a great market on Tuesday mornings, but get there early-ish. It states that the market is from early till 2pm, however by 11:30 everyone starts to pack up. The E. Le Clerc supermarket made it easy to get everything we needed with our little French and as Debbie advised, we visited McDonalds quite a few times to use their free Wifi and enjoy a latte!

Loads to see in the area: Castres is very pretty for a morning excursion, Pic de Nor had amazing 360degree views, Minervois wine region towards Beziers, Carcassonne medieval town, to name but a few!

Thanks Debbie, we loved it!

Wonderful holiday and house

  • 5 of 5

Just wanted to say a huge 'thank you' to Debbie and her family for the opportunity to stay in their beautiful home in the Montagne Noir.

This was our first time visiting this particular part of France & we'll certainly be back! 'Chez Labrespy' was a perfect home from home for our family of 3 and the family of 4 friends we holidayed with. The house had everything our young families (& grown-ups!) needed - the electricity supply was never an issue and the shower & bath fab (hot water a plenty!), plus the nearby towns of Castres, Carcassone and Mazamet were a delight to explore.

Even more than that, the nearby swimming lake - Lac du Montagne (which was an enjoyable 30min stroll through the woods, which the kids loved!) - was particularly special, as had a fantastic childrens play area/ slide in the water, a clean beach and great little creperie for snacks and a sneaky carafe of vino/ grande bier in the afternoon :o). The water park at L'Archipel (just outside Castres) was also a big hit with the children, but alas we could only fit one visit in as so much else to see & do with the Med just 80mins away!

We'll be recommending 'Chez Labrespy' to friends & family (one we've secured the dates our next break!) as the perfect, relaxed, family destination - and we had fab weather to boot!!

Thanks Debbie, we'll be back ... The Stone's & Avenell's xx

Location

From the Owner

We wanted a house project. And we found it in Labrespy. The house needed to be overhauled from top to bottom and has been completely modernised. Its taken a huge amount of time and money but has been a labour of love. We love being in the area - its feels like you are embedded into the french community when staying there; the neighbours are delightful and you've got some amazing walks and cycle rides from outside the front door.

Facilities

From the Owner

You can do as little or as much as you see fit here. Sometimes we just spend days on end reading, walking. Other occasions we jump in the car and venture to local towns and coastlines. Or walk to the local lake to swim, eat, drink and relax; it's a 45 minute romp through the forest.
