A touch of Perigordian paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived by bicycle having cycled from Bergerac with all our kit and needed to unload in order to cycle on to Eymet for our weekend shopping. I had emailed Jenette in advance requesting early access and was delighted to find, not only access but beer, wine, cheese etc. provided - a lovely touch and a good indication as to how the holiday would develop.

We met Jenette on our return from the shopping trip, our panniers well laden and were touched by her warm welcome and generous offer of transport for future shopping trips; an offer we graciously declined ( We Bikerboys only use cycles on these trips!). She comprehensively filled us in on the property, the swimming pool and the surrounding area and then melted away leaving us with the clear understanding that she was only the ring of a doorbell away should we need her.

The quality of the equipment, furniture, beds and linen was first class and augmented by a private outside living area, with brick built barbecue and overlooking the rolling rural landscape. We also had access to a separate building adjacent to ours which contained a washing machine and in which we were able to secure our bikes at night ( not that we could imagine any theft risk in this setting).

We found the gite well placed for exploring the area by bike with a choice of quiet D roads and a multitude of quiet country lanes running along the river valleys. There are plenty of delightful medieval villages within striking distance with plenty of options for plat du jour and later rehydration sessions - thirsty work cycling! For those who are younger and fitter than we are the scope for riding further into the hills is an added bonus.

To summarise: An excellent gite with a fantastic landlady in an idyllic countryside setting with plenty to do and see and the bonus of an excellent swimming pool in which to cool off in the evening - and within easy reach of Bergerac airport.

Thanks Jenette - hopefully we will be back!

Aquittaning the pinnacle

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a fabulous two-week vacation in the New Aquitaine section of the Dordogne. We had the great fortune to choose the Labarthe gites for our accommodations and serendipity has never been more kind.

We stayed in the large cottage because there were two families, one of which had small children. We simply could not have been more pleased with our arrangements. The house is actually even better than it looks on-line (and it looks great on-line). Cool in the daytime but warm in the evening and always a nice breeze. The kitchen is huge and well appointed; we made many meals while there and never felt like we were missing anything we needed for cooking. There are two bathrooms, both with very nice showers and all three bedrooms are very spacious. For the children there were tons of things to keep them amused; books, videos, board games, a petanque court and even a foosball table in the neighboring building (which also housed a washing machine). Better than any of the games was the location of the gite itself. You are on a lovely green expanse well out of town and among the fields. The kids can play outside, or go to the lovely heated pool, with no worry about their safety, and sleep in the quiet of the countryside is blissful.

Though out of town, two towns are within 9 km either way and both with great markets (matter of fact there is a market every day within about a 20-30 minute drive) as well as numerous boulangeries, restaurants and a convenient Carrefour “super market” with a 24/7 gas station in Eymet. You are also well situated to drive to any of the many wonderful things to see in the area, all without ever having to take a huge motorway.

Finally, I have to mention the proprietors who were absolutely amazing. No request was too big and the care and forethought they show is a step above. We arrived late on a Saturday after a long plane flight and drive to find a bouquet of roses, cheese plate, pate, bread, milk, wine and cold beer waiting for us. That level of thoughtfulness is rare. During the course of the stay we grew to appreciate them more and more until, at the end, leaving was like saying goodbye to family. I know we will be back to this area and there is nowhere else we would stay. So by all means make your reservations, but please don’t pick our dates!

Ryanair flies to Bergerac from Liverpool, Stansted and East Midlands; Flybe flies from Birmingham, Southampton, Exeter and Edinburgh. Bordeaux is 90 minutes from Bergerac by car. Travelling by train (from London to Bordeaux, changing in Paris) costs from around £170 return on Eurostar. Bergerac is 530 miles from Calais and 360 miles from Caen.

Situated just a few minutes drive from the market towns of Eymet and Issigeac, centuries old towns and close to many famous cultural and historic attractions of the area, you are assured of both a comfortable and tranquil holiday and lots of interesting sites to visit and things to do.

Bergerac comes to life on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when its narrow medieval streets are taken over by a market. Stock up for a picnic in the surrounding vineyards with organic tomatoes, saucisson packed with hazelnuts and fragrant strawberries. Bergerac is at the heart of affordable and welcoming wine country. It’s easy to follow a Route des Vins around the rolling vine-clad hills, discovering little-known reds such as Pécharmant and the luscious Monbazillac dessert wine.
